  • Dr. David Jeremiah: Life moves so fast,
  • 00:00:01.140 --> 00:00:04.200
  • but is it taking you where you want to go?
  • 00:00:04.210 --> 00:00:09.130
  • You can spend years searching for something you do not have,
  • 00:00:09.140 --> 00:00:13.050
  • only to end up where you don't want to be.
  • 00:00:13.060 --> 00:00:17.030
  • Exploring what the world has to offer,
  • 00:00:17.040 --> 00:00:20.080
  • we often find nothing.
  • 00:00:20.090 --> 00:00:23.270
  • However, your journey through
  • 00:00:23.280 --> 00:00:25.120
  • the twists and turns of this world
  • 00:00:25.130 --> 00:00:27.010
  • doesn't have to put you on the path
  • 00:00:27.020 --> 00:00:29.010
  • of discouragement and despair.
  • 00:00:29.020 --> 00:00:32.200
  • Let me tell you how to take the journey of your lifetime.
  • 00:00:32.210 --> 00:00:36.180
  • It's an adventure with God as your guide
  • 00:00:36.190 --> 00:00:39.030
  • where you'll discover the peace, the purpose,
  • 00:00:39.040 --> 00:00:41.280
  • and the power you've been seeking.
  • 00:00:41.290 --> 00:00:44.250
  • It's a journey of unimaginable blessing
  • 00:00:44.260 --> 00:00:48.130
  • and here is the amazing part.
  • 00:00:48.140 --> 00:00:50.210
  • With God, you already have
  • 00:00:50.220 --> 00:00:52.190
  • everything you need for life's journey.
  • 00:00:52.200 --> 00:00:55.130
  • Not half of what you need or a whole lot of what you need.
  • 00:00:55.140 --> 00:00:58.250
  • God has given you everything you need.
  • 00:00:58.260 --> 00:01:03.180
  • God never intended for you to stumble your way
  • 00:01:03.190 --> 00:01:06.020
  • through the course of each day
  • 00:01:06.030 --> 00:01:07.190
  • and certainly not journey unprepared into your future.
  • 00:01:07.200 --> 00:01:12.000
  • So where do you wanna go?
  • 00:01:12.010 --> 00:01:14.100
  • It's time to unpack all that God has given you.
  • 00:01:14.110 --> 00:01:18.250
  • Discover how you have been equipped for this journey
  • 00:01:18.260 --> 00:01:22.030
  • and can live with confidence because you, my friend,
  • 00:01:22.040 --> 00:01:25.200
  • have everything you need.
  • 00:01:25.210 --> 00:01:28.180
  • So travel with me across the United States
  • 00:01:28.190 --> 00:01:31.200
  • and join me in New York City,
  • 00:01:31.210 --> 00:01:34.020
  • high above Central Park in The Appel Room
  • 00:01:34.030 --> 00:01:37.040
  • at Jazz at Lincoln Center for my series,
  • 00:01:37.050 --> 00:01:40.160
  • "Everything You Need."
  • 00:01:40.170 --> 00:01:42.160
  • announcer: Ladies and gentlemen, Bible teacher, author,
  • 00:01:45.010 --> 00:01:47.240
  • and television host, please welcome Sheila Walsh.
  • 00:01:47.250 --> 00:01:51.230
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:01:52.140 --> 00:02:01.240
  • Sheila Walsh: Hello, everybody.
  • 00:02:01.250 --> 00:02:04.110
  • Welcome! So glad you're here.
  • 00:02:04.120 --> 00:02:08.280
  • Beautiful evening. So glad you're here.
  • 00:02:08.290 --> 00:02:11.020
  • I've had the honor of interviewing Dr. Jeremiah
  • 00:02:11.030 --> 00:02:13.190
  • in so many important subjects
  • 00:02:13.200 --> 00:02:16.140
  • but I am particularly excited about this amazing new series.
  • 00:02:16.150 --> 00:02:20.290
  • I believe it will impact how you and I live every single day.
  • 00:02:21.000 --> 00:02:26.230
  • Life is an adventure and you're either ready
  • 00:02:26.240 --> 00:02:30.040
  • to meet the challenge or you're not.
  • 00:02:30.050 --> 00:02:33.040
  • The path ahead might lead you through trying circumstances,
  • 00:02:33.050 --> 00:02:36.280
  • you might face daunting situations
  • 00:02:36.290 --> 00:02:39.150
  • or formidable obstacles.
  • 00:02:39.160 --> 00:02:42.130
  • Let me ask, do you ever feel a little unprepared
  • 00:02:42.140 --> 00:02:46.040
  • for everything that life has to throw at you?
  • 00:02:46.050 --> 00:02:49.030
  • Well, here's the great news.
  • 00:02:49.040 --> 00:02:51.020
  • You might be surprised to know that God has already given you
  • 00:02:51.030 --> 00:02:54.100
  • everything you need to live a godly life,
  • 00:02:54.110 --> 00:02:57.230
  • confident in the promises of God.
  • 00:02:57.240 --> 00:03:00.190
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:03:00.200 --> 00:03:03.000
  • And the wonderful thing about God
  • 00:03:03.010 --> 00:03:04.240
  • is God not only gives us these promises,
  • 00:03:04.250 --> 00:03:07.270
  • but he keeps every single one.
  • 00:03:07.280 --> 00:03:11.110
  • So it's time for you and I
  • 00:03:11.120 --> 00:03:12.230
  • to unpack all that God has given,
  • 00:03:12.240 --> 00:03:15.120
  • and Dr. Jeremiah is here today to encourage you
  • 00:03:15.130 --> 00:03:18.230
  • to harness the power of eight essentials
  • 00:03:18.240 --> 00:03:22.110
  • that will literally revolutionize your life.
  • 00:03:22.120 --> 00:03:25.130
  • So are you ready to get started?
  • 00:03:25.140 --> 00:03:28.030
  • Okay, please join me in welcoming to the stage
  • 00:03:28.040 --> 00:03:31.140
  • pastor, author, and beloved Bible teacher,
  • 00:03:31.150 --> 00:03:35.120
  • Dr. David Jeremiah.
  • 00:03:35.130 --> 00:03:37.210
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:03:37.220 --> 00:03:47.140
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:03:47.260 --> 00:03:50.220
  • Sheila: This new series is amazing.
  • 00:03:50.230 --> 00:03:52.200
  • "Everything You Need."
  • 00:03:52.210 --> 00:03:54.090
  • That's quite a promise.
  • 00:03:54.100 --> 00:03:56.080
  • Can you explain to us why you called this
  • 00:03:56.090 --> 00:03:57.280
  • particular teaching series, "Everything You Need"?
  • 00:03:57.290 --> 00:04:00.110
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, you know, I get most of my cues
  • 00:04:00.120 --> 00:04:02.090
  • from the Scripture and in 2 Peter chapter 1
  • 00:04:02.100 --> 00:04:05.010
  • it actually says right in the Scripture, it says:
  • 00:04:05.020 --> 00:04:08.070
  • "God has given us everything we need for life and godliness."
  • 00:04:08.080 --> 00:04:12.070
  • And I was reading that one day, aware of how many Christians
  • 00:04:12.080 --> 00:04:16.030
  • run around from place to place
  • 00:04:16.040 --> 00:04:17.280
  • trying to figure out how to get what they already have.
  • 00:04:17.290 --> 00:04:21.140
  • Sheila: Do you think we're struggling in the church
  • 00:04:21.150 --> 00:04:22.250
  • for lack of knowledge?
  • 00:04:22.260 --> 00:04:24.060
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, I think if there's one word
  • 00:04:24.070 --> 00:04:25.180
  • that describes where everybody is today,
  • 00:04:25.190 --> 00:04:27.110
  • I think it's the word "pressure."
  • 00:04:27.120 --> 00:04:28.240
  • Everybody seems like they're under a lot of pressure.
  • 00:04:28.250 --> 00:04:31.080
  • And I have to be honest with you, Sheila,
  • 00:04:31.090 --> 00:04:32.270
  • I got attracted to this particular passage
  • 00:04:32.280 --> 00:04:34.280
  • because I think it's singularly
  • 00:04:34.290 --> 00:04:36.200
  • one of the most perfect passages of Scripture in the Bible.
  • 00:04:36.210 --> 00:04:41.010
  • First of all, there's a promise at the beginning
  • 00:04:41.020 --> 00:04:43.110
  • and there's a blessing at the end
  • 00:04:43.120 --> 00:04:45.120
  • and in between are all the things you need to do
  • 00:04:45.130 --> 00:04:47.160
  • to get from the promise to the blessing.
  • 00:04:47.170 --> 00:04:49.160
  • And it's right in the text and it's--
  • 00:04:49.170 --> 00:04:51.230
  • it just grabbed me so much
  • 00:04:51.240 --> 00:04:53.200
  • I thought I gotta share that passage
  • 00:04:53.210 --> 00:04:55.090
  • because it's so powerful.
  • 00:04:55.100 --> 00:04:56.210
  • Sheila: Yeah, you're in for a great adventure.
  • 00:04:56.220 --> 00:04:58.130
  • One of the interesting things,
  • 00:04:58.140 --> 00:05:00.040
  • when Peter writes this letter and he talks about,
  • 00:05:00.050 --> 00:05:02.120
  • "To your faith add this and add that,"
  • 00:05:02.130 --> 00:05:04.230
  • you had an interesting revelation on the Greek meaning
  • 00:05:04.240 --> 00:05:07.220
  • behind the word "add."
  • 00:05:07.230 --> 00:05:09.130
  • Dr. Jeremiah: You know, the Bible is so special.
  • 00:05:09.140 --> 00:05:11.070
  • You never wanna discount any word.
  • 00:05:11.080 --> 00:05:13.040
  • There's one little word, it's only mentioned
  • 00:05:13.050 --> 00:05:15.070
  • in 2 Peter 1 one time but it's assumed six times.
  • 00:05:15.080 --> 00:05:19.170
  • And it's the little word, "add."
  • 00:05:19.180 --> 00:05:21.140
  • And the Scripture goes something like this:
  • 00:05:21.150 --> 00:05:23.140
  • "When you have the special promises of God
  • 00:05:23.150 --> 00:05:25.160
  • you're to add to your faith virtue,
  • 00:05:25.170 --> 00:05:29.160
  • and to your virtue knowledge, and to your knowledge,"
  • 00:05:29.170 --> 00:05:32.050
  • and then it goes through all the eight things.
  • 00:05:32.060 --> 00:05:33.270
  • But the word "add" only is in the text one time
  • 00:05:33.280 --> 00:05:37.030
  • but it's assumed in all of the others.
  • 00:05:37.040 --> 00:05:38.250
  • So when he says, "Add to your faith virtue,
  • 00:05:38.260 --> 00:05:41.140
  • and to your virtue knowledge,"
  • 00:05:41.150 --> 00:05:43.090
  • you assume he's saying "add to--"
  • 00:05:43.100 --> 00:05:44.220
  • so the word is assumed.
  • 00:05:44.230 --> 00:05:46.220
  • But the interesting thing about the word,
  • 00:05:46.230 --> 00:05:48.060
  • it's only three letters
  • 00:05:48.070 --> 00:05:49.210
  • and it is an incredibly powerful word.
  • 00:05:49.220 --> 00:05:52.120
  • It is a word that was used
  • 00:05:52.130 --> 00:05:54.150
  • in the days of the Greek theater.
  • 00:05:54.160 --> 00:05:56.250
  • When they would put on a major play,
  • 00:05:56.260 --> 00:05:59.080
  • they would get a sponsor.
  • 00:05:59.090 --> 00:06:01.050
  • He was called a choreogos and that's the word "add"
  • 00:06:01.060 --> 00:06:05.030
  • and it meant he would go out
  • 00:06:05.040 --> 00:06:06.130
  • and he would spend all this money
  • 00:06:06.140 --> 00:06:07.290
  • and get all these people together
  • 00:06:08.000 --> 00:06:09.190
  • to try to substantially make this play
  • 00:06:09.200 --> 00:06:12.220
  • better than anybody else could make it,
  • 00:06:12.230 --> 00:06:14.290
  • and that's what the word "add" means.
  • 00:06:15.000 --> 00:06:16.220
  • And so, when Peter says we're to add to our faith virtue,
  • 00:06:16.230 --> 00:06:20.000
  • he's not talking about just, you know, throwing in a thought.
  • 00:06:20.010 --> 00:06:22.260
  • He's saying, "lavishly, completely,
  • 00:06:22.270 --> 00:06:25.250
  • like you were choreographing a play,
  • 00:06:25.260 --> 00:06:28.020
  • add to your faith virtue."
  • 00:06:28.030 --> 00:06:29.160
  • In other words, do it seriously.
  • 00:06:29.170 --> 00:06:31.130
  • Don't just give it a second thought.
  • 00:06:31.140 --> 00:06:33.060
  • Do it as seriously as a man would go out
  • 00:06:33.070 --> 00:06:35.280
  • and try to raise money to underwrite a play.
  • 00:06:35.290 --> 00:06:39.090
  • Sheila: That's huge intentionality that would impact
  • 00:06:39.100 --> 00:06:41.170
  • how you live every single day.
  • 00:06:41.180 --> 00:06:42.290
  • Dr. Jeremiah: And you know what?
  • 00:06:43.000 --> 00:06:44.090
  • I had to ask myself have I ever done anything like that?
  • 00:06:44.100 --> 00:06:46.240
  • You know, we had our moments
  • 00:06:46.250 --> 00:06:48.050
  • when we worked harder at the Christian life
  • 00:06:48.060 --> 00:06:49.210
  • but have we ever thrown everything we have at it?
  • 00:06:49.220 --> 00:06:51.260
  • Have we ever said, "Here it is, men.
  • 00:06:51.270 --> 00:06:53.210
  • This is my number one priority.
  • 00:06:53.220 --> 00:06:55.060
  • No matter what, I'm gonna make this happen
  • 00:06:55.070 --> 00:06:56.290
  • by the grace of God."
  • 00:06:57.000 --> 00:06:58.110
  • That's what the word means.
  • 00:06:58.120 --> 00:07:00.020
  • Sheila: And you talk about this great adventure
  • 00:07:00.030 --> 00:07:01.220
  • that begins with promises and ends in blessing.
  • 00:07:01.230 --> 00:07:04.200
  • But I'm wondering what about people who think,
  • 00:07:04.210 --> 00:07:06.180
  • "You know what?
  • 00:07:06.190 --> 00:07:07.280
  • I wish I'd heard this message years ago.
  • 00:07:07.290 --> 00:07:09.110
  • I'm too far beyond the promises of God."
  • 00:07:09.120 --> 00:07:11.220
  • Dr. Jeremiah: You know, the wonderful thing
  • 00:07:11.230 --> 00:07:13.030
  • about all that, Sheila, is that God's promises are eternal.
  • 00:07:13.040 --> 00:07:15.120
  • They never run out.
  • 00:07:15.130 --> 00:07:16.270
  • God miraculously meets us wherever we are
  • 00:07:16.280 --> 00:07:19.160
  • with whatever situation and, you know,
  • 00:07:19.170 --> 00:07:21.050
  • it takes some of us longer to get the message.
  • 00:07:21.060 --> 00:07:23.040
  • Isn't that true?
  • 00:07:23.050 --> 00:07:24.170
  • We have to go through more stuff until we hear him speak,
  • 00:07:24.180 --> 00:07:26.270
  • and then ultimately, because of what's going on in our life,
  • 00:07:26.280 --> 00:07:30.210
  • I mean I can't get over how many times as a pastor
  • 00:07:30.220 --> 00:07:33.020
  • I've found that the things that happen to us in our lives
  • 00:07:33.030 --> 00:07:36.160
  • are God's way of getting our attention
  • 00:07:36.170 --> 00:07:39.060
  • so he can help us understand how much he loves us
  • 00:07:39.070 --> 00:07:41.140
  • and what he wants to do to help us.
  • 00:07:41.150 --> 00:07:43.110
  • Sheila: So let's look at the things that Peter said
  • 00:07:43.120 --> 00:07:45.200
  • that we should add to our faith.
  • 00:07:45.210 --> 00:07:47.080
  • I thought it was interesting that the first thing
  • 00:07:47.090 --> 00:07:48.250
  • he talks about is diligence.
  • 00:07:48.260 --> 00:07:52.020
  • Why do you think Peter made that the very first step
  • 00:07:52.030 --> 00:07:54.150
  • in what you call, I love this,
  • 00:07:54.160 --> 00:07:56.060
  • a stumble-proof life?
  • 00:07:56.070 --> 00:07:58.030
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, I think it's important because
  • 00:07:58.040 --> 00:07:59.260
  • it's the thing we usually don't bring to the process.
  • 00:07:59.270 --> 00:08:03.170
  • You know, we hear a message.
  • 00:08:03.180 --> 00:08:04.270
  • We think we should do it but we don't do it diligently.
  • 00:08:04.280 --> 00:08:07.120
  • And the word "diligently" is a very powerful word.
  • 00:08:07.130 --> 00:08:09.190
  • It kind of goes along with the word "add."
  • 00:08:09.200 --> 00:08:11.240
  • It means make this a serious effort on your part
  • 00:08:11.250 --> 00:08:15.220
  • and do it diligently.
  • 00:08:15.230 --> 00:08:18.020
  • Practice it, work on it, don't put it off, don't say,
  • 00:08:18.030 --> 00:08:21.040
  • "I'll get around to it."
  • 00:08:21.050 --> 00:08:22.140
  • Get at it.
  • 00:08:22.150 --> 00:08:23.240
  • Do it and make it your main objective.
  • 00:08:23.250 --> 00:08:25.200
  • Sheila: I'm wondering even for some
  • 00:08:25.210 --> 00:08:27.010
  • who are younger in the faith, they might think, you know,
  • 00:08:27.020 --> 00:08:28.260
  • "That sounds like a lot of hard work."
  • 00:08:28.270 --> 00:08:30.260
  • How do you stay focused on being diligent?
  • 00:08:30.270 --> 00:08:34.040
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, it is a lot of hard work.
  • 00:08:34.050 --> 00:08:37.010
  • Most everything that's worthwhile
  • 00:08:37.020 --> 00:08:38.140
  • is a lot of hard work.
  • 00:08:38.150 --> 00:08:39.240
  • Can I get a witness on that, right?
  • 00:08:39.250 --> 00:08:42.090
  • But it is worthwhile hard work and what I found is this,
  • 00:08:42.100 --> 00:08:46.150
  • as you diligently apply yourself to the Scriptures,
  • 00:08:46.160 --> 00:08:50.050
  • God will always give you enough encouragement
  • 00:08:50.060 --> 00:08:52.080
  • in the process to keep you going.
  • 00:08:52.090 --> 00:08:54.090
  • But if you don't diligently apply yourself,
  • 00:08:54.100 --> 00:08:56.110
  • you've got nowhere to go.
  • 00:08:56.120 --> 00:08:57.210
  • You're just sort of hanging in nowhere space.
  • 00:08:57.220 --> 00:09:00.030
  • He wants us more than anything else to get serious
  • 00:09:00.040 --> 00:09:02.190
  • about what we say we believe.
  • 00:09:02.200 --> 00:09:04.180
  • Sheila: Stay tuned.
  • 00:09:05.160 --> 00:09:06.250
  • We'll be right back to continue discussing
  • 00:09:06.260 --> 00:09:08.050
  • "Everything You Need,"
  • 00:09:08.060 --> 00:09:09.150
  • the new teaching series by Dr. David Jeremiah.
  • 00:09:09.160 --> 00:09:12.160
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:09:13.030 --> 00:09:18.150
  • announcer: In Dr. Jeremiah's new book,
  • 00:09:20.080 --> 00:09:21.210
  • "Everything You Need,"
  • 00:09:21.220 --> 00:09:23.010
  • he invites you to consider how would your life change
  • 00:09:23.020 --> 00:09:25.270
  • if you had the energy to diligently fulfill
  • 00:09:25.280 --> 00:09:28.060
  • God's purpose for you,
  • 00:09:28.070 --> 00:09:30.050
  • or the confidence to always do what pleases God,
  • 00:09:30.060 --> 00:09:33.040
  • or had an intimate knowledge of his Word?
  • 00:09:33.050 --> 00:09:35.240
  • What would your faith be like if you replaced a harmful habit
  • 00:09:35.250 --> 00:09:38.130
  • with a positive one, or developed a determination
  • 00:09:38.140 --> 00:09:41.030
  • that could carry you through any difficulty?
  • 00:09:41.040 --> 00:09:43.230
  • Do you want to see yourself becoming more like Christ,
  • 00:09:43.240 --> 00:09:46.240
  • sharing his kindness and love to those around you?
  • 00:09:46.250 --> 00:09:49.210
  • It may surprise you to know that God has already given you
  • 00:09:49.220 --> 00:09:52.040
  • everything you need to do all this and more.
  • 00:09:52.050 --> 00:09:55.050
  • In "Everything You Need,"
  • 00:09:55.120 --> 00:09:56.250
  • learn practical ways to unleash the power of God in your life,
  • 00:09:56.260 --> 00:10:00.040

  • Sheila: Thank you for joining us.
  • 00:10:32.020 --> 00:10:33.140
  • I'm Sheila Walsh, here again to talk with Dr. David Jeremiah
  • 00:10:33.150 --> 00:10:36.090
  • about his new series, "Everything You Need."
  • 00:10:36.100 --> 00:10:39.200
  • Sheila: The next thing that Peter talks about
  • 00:10:40.230 --> 00:10:42.200
  • adding to our faith is virtue.
  • 00:10:42.210 --> 00:10:44.210
  • That's not a word we use a lot in our culture anymore.
  • 00:10:44.220 --> 00:10:47.010
  • What exactly is virtue?
  • 00:10:47.020 --> 00:10:48.130
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, let me explain why we don't use it
  • 00:10:48.140 --> 00:10:49.230
  • very much 'cause there isn't very much of it in our culture.
  • 00:10:49.240 --> 00:10:52.030
  • Sheila: That's for sure.
  • 00:10:52.040 --> 00:10:53.260
  • Dr. Jeremiah: You know, virtue, the best definition of virtue
  • 00:10:53.270 --> 00:10:56.220
  • is moral excellence, doing the right thing.
  • 00:10:56.230 --> 00:11:00.130
  • There is a right and there is a wrong
  • 00:11:00.140 --> 00:11:02.080
  • and the Bible helps us understand.
  • 00:11:02.090 --> 00:11:04.080
  • You know, one of the best illustrations of it
  • 00:11:04.090 --> 00:11:06.000
  • and I talk about this in that chapter
  • 00:11:06.010 --> 00:11:07.230
  • is that when Jesus Christ was on this earth
  • 00:11:07.240 --> 00:11:10.280
  • he was the model of virtue
  • 00:11:10.290 --> 00:11:12.190
  • and the way we can see virtue in his life
  • 00:11:12.200 --> 00:11:15.130
  • more than anything else is the Bible says:
  • 00:11:15.140 --> 00:11:17.120
  • "He always did those things that pleased his Father."
  • 00:11:17.130 --> 00:11:21.080
  • That was how he lived his life.
  • 00:11:21.090 --> 00:11:22.270
  • And you know, if you wanna be a virtuous person,
  • 00:11:22.280 --> 00:11:25.020
  • you can get real technical about it.
  • 00:11:25.030 --> 00:11:26.240
  • You can make all kinds of lists but let me just give you the--
  • 00:11:26.250 --> 00:11:30.020
  • what I think is the secret.
  • 00:11:30.030 --> 00:11:31.270
  • Learn how to live your life to please the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 00:11:31.280 --> 00:11:36.030
  • Do what pleases him and, you know what?
  • 00:11:36.040 --> 00:11:40.080
  • You don't have to wonder what those things are
  • 00:11:40.090 --> 00:11:44.030
  • 'cause he tells you pretty much in his Scripture
  • 00:11:44.040 --> 00:11:46.010
  • by his life, by his testimony.
  • 00:11:46.020 --> 00:11:48.180
  • As Jesus Christ pleased his Father,
  • 00:11:48.190 --> 00:11:51.130
  • our goal is to please our Christ.
  • 00:11:51.140 --> 00:11:54.280
  • So we're in that same little construct
  • 00:11:54.290 --> 00:11:56.270
  • where if we study the life of Jesus
  • 00:11:56.280 --> 00:11:59.030
  • and we watch how he functioned with his Father,
  • 00:11:59.040 --> 00:12:02.200
  • we learn how to function with him.
  • 00:12:02.210 --> 00:12:05.170
  • Sheila: Peter says to that diligence and virtue,
  • 00:12:05.180 --> 00:12:08.080
  • then we add knowledge.
  • 00:12:08.090 --> 00:12:09.270
  • I think this is an interesting one
  • 00:12:09.280 --> 00:12:11.090
  • because we live in a time where people think technically
  • 00:12:11.100 --> 00:12:13.250
  • we have access to more knowledge
  • 00:12:13.260 --> 00:12:15.210
  • than we ever had.
  • 00:12:15.220 --> 00:12:17.060
  • But what kind of knowledge is Peter actually talking about?
  • 00:12:17.070 --> 00:12:19.220
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, let me just put a point in here
  • 00:12:19.230 --> 00:12:21.070
  • for the importance of knowledge
  • 00:12:21.080 --> 00:12:22.190
  • because there are a lot of people today
  • 00:12:22.200 --> 00:12:24.010
  • who teach that if you really wanna know Jesus Christ
  • 00:12:24.020 --> 00:12:26.160
  • you have to shut your brain off and just let your emotions rule.
  • 00:12:26.170 --> 00:12:29.280
  • That's a bunch of craziness
  • 00:12:29.290 --> 00:12:31.120
  • and I hope that you haven't heard that
  • 00:12:31.130 --> 00:12:32.240
  • and gotten caught up in it
  • 00:12:32.250 --> 00:12:34.040
  • because we can't do anything with what we don't know.
  • 00:12:34.050 --> 00:12:37.100
  • It's important to know some things.
  • 00:12:37.110 --> 00:12:39.060
  • In the Bible we're taught, first of all,
  • 00:12:39.070 --> 00:12:41.200
  • to study the Scripture
  • 00:12:41.210 --> 00:12:43.030
  • and know what the Scripture says.
  • 00:12:43.040 --> 00:12:44.250
  • There's some homework involved in that.
  • 00:12:44.260 --> 00:12:46.250
  • It's blessed homework but it's still homework.
  • 00:12:46.260 --> 00:12:49.070
  • You know, the Bible is open to those
  • 00:12:49.080 --> 00:12:51.160
  • who will take it seriously
  • 00:12:51.170 --> 00:12:53.080
  • and then once you study the Scripture
  • 00:12:53.090 --> 00:12:55.200
  • you realize that in studying the Scripture
  • 00:12:55.210 --> 00:12:57.290
  • you're learning about Christ.
  • 00:12:58.000 --> 00:12:59.180
  • Somebody once told me we can almost tell
  • 00:12:59.190 --> 00:13:01.170
  • what our relationship with Christ really is
  • 00:13:01.180 --> 00:13:03.280
  • when we examine what our relationship
  • 00:13:03.290 --> 00:13:05.190
  • with the Scripture is.
  • 00:13:05.200 --> 00:13:07.160
  • In other words, we can say, "I love the Lord,"
  • 00:13:07.170 --> 00:13:09.240
  • but if you don't ever read his love letters to you,
  • 00:13:09.250 --> 00:13:11.190
  • how does that work?
  • 00:13:11.200 --> 00:13:13.030
  • So you study the Scripture, you read the Word of God,
  • 00:13:13.040 --> 00:13:16.120
  • you learn what the Word of God says,
  • 00:13:16.130 --> 00:13:18.110
  • and the more you study, the more you know,
  • 00:13:18.120 --> 00:13:20.200
  • the more you know, the more you realize you don't know.
  • 00:13:20.210 --> 00:13:22.290
  • That's one thing for sure. And the more you want to know.
  • 00:13:23.000 --> 00:13:26.120
  • Sheila: How do you stay motivated to still get excited
  • 00:13:26.130 --> 00:13:29.050
  • to dive in one more time?
  • 00:13:29.060 --> 00:13:31.010
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, the Bible says that
  • 00:13:31.020 --> 00:13:32.110
  • "God's mercies are new every morning."
  • 00:13:32.120 --> 00:13:34.130
  • Isn't that true?
  • 00:13:34.140 --> 00:13:35.280
  • One of the blessings for me at this stage of my life
  • 00:13:35.290 --> 00:13:38.140
  • is I've taught most of the Scripture
  • 00:13:38.150 --> 00:13:40.120
  • and now when I'm studying a portion of Scripture,
  • 00:13:40.130 --> 00:13:43.040
  • God brings to my mind the things that I've studied about,
  • 00:13:43.050 --> 00:13:45.140
  • other portions that have to do with this.
  • 00:13:45.150 --> 00:13:48.090
  • And it's just kind of that wonderful mystery
  • 00:13:48.100 --> 00:13:50.270
  • that goes on in the Scripture.
  • 00:13:50.280 --> 00:13:53.110
  • Sheila: The next thing that Peter says
  • 00:13:53.120 --> 00:13:54.250
  • we should add to our faith is self-control.
  • 00:13:54.260 --> 00:13:57.290
  • One of the things I found encouraging
  • 00:13:58.000 --> 00:13:59.180
  • in your teaching in this series is you say
  • 00:13:59.190 --> 00:14:01.070
  • it's really more spirit-control than self-control.
  • 00:14:01.080 --> 00:14:04.150
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Yeah, a lot of times,
  • 00:14:04.160 --> 00:14:05.250
  • we blame our body for the things that go on
  • 00:14:05.260 --> 00:14:08.170
  • and we should, probably.
  • 00:14:08.180 --> 00:14:10.110
  • But most of the problems we have with sin
  • 00:14:10.120 --> 00:14:12.020
  • don't start in our body.
  • 00:14:12.030 --> 00:14:13.120
  • They start in our mind.
  • 00:14:13.130 --> 00:14:15.000
  • What we open up our minds to is what allows us
  • 00:14:15.010 --> 00:14:17.150
  • to go down the road that gets us in trouble.
  • 00:14:17.160 --> 00:14:20.050
  • Let me just say more than ever before
  • 00:14:20.060 --> 00:14:22.060
  • because of the Internet
  • 00:14:22.070 --> 00:14:23.170
  • and because of what used to be entertainment,
  • 00:14:23.180 --> 00:14:25.230
  • I told our people that we just did something in our house
  • 00:14:25.240 --> 00:14:28.150
  • and got a new system that's got, like,
  • 00:14:28.160 --> 00:14:30.150
  • 100 and 150 channels or whatever.
  • 00:14:30.160 --> 00:14:33.170
  • And one night I just sat down
  • 00:14:33.180 --> 00:14:35.060
  • and I clicked through all those channels
  • 00:14:35.070 --> 00:14:36.160
  • and I couldn't find one single thing
  • 00:14:36.170 --> 00:14:38.090
  • that I thought was worth watching.
  • 00:14:38.100 --> 00:14:40.020
  • Out of 150 channels.
  • 00:14:40.030 --> 00:14:42.160
  • Does that say anything about our culture?
  • 00:14:42.170 --> 00:14:44.250
  • I mean, thank God for sports.
  • 00:14:44.260 --> 00:14:47.000
  • Sheila: Amen.
  • 00:14:48.060 --> 00:14:49.150
  • [laughing]
  • 00:14:49.160 --> 00:14:52.110
  • The next thing that Peter addresses is perseverance.
  • 00:14:53.040 --> 00:14:57.000
  • What does it really mean to persevere?
  • 00:14:57.010 --> 00:14:59.280
  • Dr. Jeremiah: The best way to say that
  • 00:14:59.290 --> 00:15:01.100
  • is perseverance is continuing when you don't want to.
  • 00:15:01.110 --> 00:15:05.270
  • Here's what I've learned. Somebody told me this.
  • 00:15:05.280 --> 00:15:07.280
  • When we think we can't do anymore,
  • 00:15:07.290 --> 00:15:10.100
  • there's still 60% more that we can do.
  • 00:15:10.110 --> 00:15:14.230
  • We have our own little personal limitations
  • 00:15:14.240 --> 00:15:17.110
  • that are comfortable to us.
  • 00:15:17.120 --> 00:15:19.090
  • Perseverance is going beyond where you think you can go.
  • 00:15:19.100 --> 00:15:22.230
  • All of us here, if we're Christians,
  • 00:15:22.240 --> 00:15:25.050
  • we're Christians because somebody persevered.
  • 00:15:25.060 --> 00:15:28.100
  • Somebody preached the gospel when it wasn't easy.
  • 00:15:28.110 --> 00:15:31.020
  • Somebody came to your home
  • 00:15:31.030 --> 00:15:32.140
  • when they'd rather been home watching TV.
  • 00:15:32.150 --> 00:15:34.100
  • Somebody prayed for you.
  • 00:15:34.110 --> 00:15:36.090
  • Perseverance is one of the building blocks
  • 00:15:36.100 --> 00:15:38.130
  • of who we are in Christ.
  • 00:15:38.140 --> 00:15:40.040
  • Aren't you glad that Jesus Christ persevered
  • 00:15:40.050 --> 00:15:42.180
  • all the way to the cross, amen?
  • 00:15:42.190 --> 00:15:45.020
  • Sheila: Amen. I love how you describe it.
  • 00:15:45.030 --> 00:15:48.000
  • In this teaching you actually call it
  • 00:15:48.010 --> 00:15:50.000
  • "relentless determination."
  • 00:15:50.010 --> 00:15:52.060
  • Dr. Jeremiah: That's what it is.
  • 00:15:52.070 --> 00:15:53.190
  • When you're involved in serving the Lord,
  • 00:15:53.200 --> 00:15:57.000
  • the enemy comes along and he whispers in your heart,
  • 00:15:57.010 --> 00:15:59.110
  • "That's enough.
  • 00:15:59.120 --> 00:16:00.230
  • You don't need to do that anymore.
  • 00:16:00.240 --> 00:16:02.030
  • You're finished."
  • 00:16:02.040 --> 00:16:03.130
  • But you don't do that.
  • 00:16:03.140 --> 00:16:04.230
  • Relentlessly, you pursue, you go forward.
  • 00:16:04.240 --> 00:16:07.060
  • You know, the Bible teaches us
  • 00:16:07.070 --> 00:16:08.160
  • to live our lives in day-tight compartments.
  • 00:16:08.170 --> 00:16:10.100
  • The Bible says: "Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof."
  • 00:16:10.220 --> 00:16:14.000
  • And in the New Testament, says: "Don't worry about tomorrow,
  • 00:16:14.010 --> 00:16:17.220
  • for tomorrow will worry about itself."
  • 00:16:17.230 --> 00:16:20.090
  • You know, if we have something that's hard for us to do
  • 00:16:20.100 --> 00:16:24.030
  • and you get caught up in the immensity of it,
  • 00:16:24.040 --> 00:16:26.180
  • you will never be able to achieve it.
  • 00:16:26.190 --> 00:16:29.020
  • But you can achieve what comes tomorrow.
  • 00:16:29.030 --> 00:16:31.200
  • And God never gives us more.
  • 00:16:31.210 --> 00:16:33.150
  • You know, he's-- isn't it interesting?
  • 00:16:33.160 --> 00:16:35.050
  • God created the world like this.
  • 00:16:35.060 --> 00:16:36.280
  • He gives us days and hours and weeks and years.
  • 00:16:36.290 --> 00:16:41.000
  • He could have created this just like an endless eternity
  • 00:16:41.010 --> 00:16:45.110
  • even on this earth.
  • 00:16:45.120 --> 00:16:47.070
  • But I think those places are good for us.
  • 00:16:47.080 --> 00:16:50.160
  • It's good that we have a week we can look back on.
  • 00:16:50.170 --> 00:16:53.120
  • It's good that we have a day that we can say,
  • 00:16:53.130 --> 00:16:55.220
  • "I don't know how I'm gonna get there,
  • 00:16:55.230 --> 00:16:57.030
  • but I can get here."
  • 00:16:57.040 --> 00:16:58.240
  • And I'd just encourage people,
  • 00:16:58.250 --> 00:17:00.150
  • try not to get so caught up in the past that you get depressed.
  • 00:17:00.160 --> 00:17:03.220
  • And don't worry about the future 'cause you're not there yet.
  • 00:17:03.230 --> 00:17:06.230
  • Live today and ask God to give you the grace for today
  • 00:17:06.240 --> 00:17:09.240
  • and when you do that, he will do that.
  • 00:17:09.250 --> 00:17:11.110
  • Sheila: Yeah, that's beautiful.
  • 00:17:11.120 --> 00:17:13.070
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:17:13.080 --> 00:17:16.140
  • Sheila: The next thing that Peter encourages us
  • 00:17:16.150 --> 00:17:18.190
  • to add to our faith is godliness.
  • 00:17:18.200 --> 00:17:20.280
  • And godliness is one of those words
  • 00:17:20.290 --> 00:17:22.100
  • that just seems like it's kinda unattainable.
  • 00:17:22.110 --> 00:17:24.190
  • It's very lofty--
  • 00:17:24.200 --> 00:17:26.040
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, you know what, Sheila,
  • 00:17:26.050 --> 00:17:27.140
  • can I just be honest with you?
  • 00:17:27.150 --> 00:17:28.240
  • When I saw that list, I was pretty excited
  • 00:17:28.250 --> 00:17:30.210
  • about everything that was on that list.
  • 00:17:30.220 --> 00:17:32.140
  • When I saw "godliness," I got, "Oh, no,"
  • 00:17:32.150 --> 00:17:36.100
  • because, you know, that's an intimidating word, isn't it?
  • 00:17:36.110 --> 00:17:38.250
  • Sheila: It is.
  • 00:17:38.260 --> 00:17:40.050
  • Dr. Jeremiah: And it's been used in the wrong way
  • 00:17:40.060 --> 00:17:41.170
  • by a lot of people
  • 00:17:41.180 --> 00:17:42.270
  • and sometimes it can make you feel like,
  • 00:17:42.280 --> 00:17:44.140
  • "Well, I'm not even in this race.
  • 00:17:44.150 --> 00:17:46.010
  • Why am I even-- I don't even--
  • 00:17:46.020 --> 00:17:47.190
  • I don't even belong in a conversation about that."
  • 00:17:47.200 --> 00:17:50.050
  • But let's face it.
  • 00:17:50.060 --> 00:17:51.200
  • When you break that word down, it's simply this.
  • 00:17:51.210 --> 00:17:54.220
  • To be godly is to try to be like God.
  • 00:17:54.230 --> 00:17:58.000
  • That's all it means. To do what God would do.
  • 00:17:58.010 --> 00:18:00.140
  • And it's not like we don't have an illustration
  • 00:18:00.150 --> 00:18:03.030
  • because God in heaven, nobody has seen,
  • 00:18:03.040 --> 00:18:06.130
  • you can't see him and live.
  • 00:18:06.140 --> 00:18:08.100
  • So he sent his Son down here who was God in the flesh
  • 00:18:08.110 --> 00:18:12.170
  • and allowed us to witness his life for 30-some years
  • 00:18:12.180 --> 00:18:16.200
  • and see what it looks like to live godly.
  • 00:18:16.210 --> 00:18:20.010
  • And it's not all the high stuff that we put.
  • 00:18:20.020 --> 00:18:23.170
  • You know what it was?
  • 00:18:23.180 --> 00:18:24.270
  • It was helping a woman who was caught in adultery.
  • 00:18:24.280 --> 00:18:28.130
  • It was helping a father who lost his child.
  • 00:18:28.140 --> 00:18:31.290
  • It was reaching out to people with love and kindness.
  • 00:18:32.000 --> 00:18:35.010
  • When you see the life of Jesus on this earth and what he did,
  • 00:18:35.020 --> 00:18:38.090
  • it's not all this doctrinal stuff we think about.
  • 00:18:38.100 --> 00:18:41.060
  • It's the love and ministry we have with other people.
  • 00:18:41.070 --> 00:18:43.240
  • That's what it means to be godly.
  • 00:18:43.250 --> 00:18:45.260
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:18:45.270 --> 00:18:49.150
  • Sheila: I can't think of a time in our culture
  • 00:18:49.160 --> 00:18:51.110
  • or in the church when we've needed this more.
  • 00:18:51.120 --> 00:18:53.190
  • He talks about brotherly kindness.
  • 00:18:53.200 --> 00:18:56.240
  • Why do you think Peter included that in this list?
  • 00:18:56.250 --> 00:19:00.210
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, because he lived in a time
  • 00:19:00.220 --> 00:19:02.140
  • similar to us.
  • 00:19:02.150 --> 00:19:04.170
  • He lived in a time when people went about
  • 00:19:04.180 --> 00:19:08.170
  • talking about love and not examining
  • 00:19:08.180 --> 00:19:11.120
  • their own lives to see if it was true.
  • 00:19:11.130 --> 00:19:13.220
  • And many of these chapters, you guys,
  • 00:19:13.230 --> 00:19:15.090
  • when we wrote this book,
  • 00:19:15.100 --> 00:19:17.070
  • I would take the quality that's on the list
  • 00:19:17.080 --> 00:19:19.160
  • and then I'd try to find the central passage
  • 00:19:19.170 --> 00:19:21.210
  • in the New Testament that taught that,
  • 00:19:21.220 --> 00:19:23.170
  • and the central passage for that one is in Ephesians chapter 4.
  • 00:19:23.180 --> 00:19:27.240
  • Well, you know this passage. If I say it, you'll remember it.
  • 00:19:27.250 --> 00:19:30.110
  • "Be kind one to another, tenderhearted,
  • 00:19:30.120 --> 00:19:32.270
  • forgiving one another,
  • 00:19:32.280 --> 00:19:34.100
  • even as God for Christ's sake has forgiven you."
  • 00:19:34.110 --> 00:19:37.010
  • Isn't it a wonderful passage?
  • 00:19:37.020 --> 00:19:38.190
  • That's what brotherly kindness is.
  • 00:19:38.200 --> 00:19:40.160
  • And if you unlock that passage, there's, like,
  • 00:19:40.170 --> 00:19:42.200
  • four or five points in there that teach you what it means
  • 00:19:42.210 --> 00:19:45.260
  • to be kind and loving to one another,
  • 00:19:45.270 --> 00:19:49.100
  • including a whole little section on not being angry.
  • 00:19:49.110 --> 00:19:53.090
  • And if you go back to Ephesians 4,
  • 00:19:53.100 --> 00:19:55.250
  • it's about verse 25 or so, and read that section,
  • 00:19:55.260 --> 00:19:59.010
  • you will have Paul's sermon on brotherly kindness
  • 00:19:59.020 --> 00:20:04.010
  • and what it looks like and it's all real simple.
  • 00:20:04.020 --> 00:20:07.060
  • I mean, it's not rocket science.
  • 00:20:07.070 --> 00:20:09.030
  • It's just the everyday things that we do
  • 00:20:09.040 --> 00:20:11.260
  • that make a difference in who we are.
  • 00:20:11.270 --> 00:20:13.240
  • Sheila: Well, we've come to the conclusion of Peter's list
  • 00:20:13.250 --> 00:20:16.020
  • and we're told to add love to our faith.
  • 00:20:16.030 --> 00:20:18.190
  • And you point out the New Living Translation
  • 00:20:18.200 --> 00:20:20.160
  • describes it as love for everyone.
  • 00:20:20.170 --> 00:20:23.200
  • How do we do that when there's, I mean,
  • 00:20:23.210 --> 00:20:26.220
  • I know there'll be many people out there
  • 00:20:26.230 --> 00:20:28.040
  • who have been seriously hurt by someone.
  • 00:20:28.050 --> 00:20:29.280
  • How do you love when you've been wounded?
  • 00:20:29.290 --> 00:20:32.260
  • Dr. Jeremiah: It's not natural. Sheila: No.
  • 00:20:32.270 --> 00:20:34.130
  • Dr. Jeremiah: No, but it's supernatural.
  • 00:20:34.140 --> 00:20:37.040
  • You can only love that person through the love of Christ.
  • 00:20:37.050 --> 00:20:40.050
  • And I think the key to us all, for all of us,
  • 00:20:40.060 --> 00:20:42.110
  • is to realize how unlovely we were
  • 00:20:42.120 --> 00:20:46.190
  • when Christ died for us.
  • 00:20:46.200 --> 00:20:48.100
  • The Bible even says it, you know?
  • 00:20:48.110 --> 00:20:50.140
  • The Bible says it in so many different ways.
  • 00:20:50.150 --> 00:20:52.070
  • He died for us when there really
  • 00:20:52.080 --> 00:20:53.190
  • was no reason for him to do that.
  • 00:20:53.200 --> 00:20:55.230
  • And here's what I've been learning in my life, Sheila.
  • 00:20:55.240 --> 00:20:58.180
  • We love others out of the reservoir of God's love for us.
  • 00:20:58.190 --> 00:21:03.230
  • Sheila: That's so true.
  • 00:21:03.240 --> 00:21:06.160
  • Our culture, particularly at the moment
  • 00:21:06.170 --> 00:21:09.160
  • in the days we're living in, seems very polarized,
  • 00:21:09.170 --> 00:21:11.270
  • you know, that we're all one side or another.
  • 00:21:11.280 --> 00:21:14.160
  • How do we practice that love in that atmosphere?
  • 00:21:14.170 --> 00:21:18.100
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, you know, I'm not really sure where to go
  • 00:21:18.110 --> 00:21:21.050
  • with what I know you're talking about.
  • 00:21:21.060 --> 00:21:23.100
  • Today, in our culture, it's not even a matter of love anymore.
  • 00:21:23.110 --> 00:21:26.260
  • It's just--it's a matter of civility, you know?
  • 00:21:26.270 --> 00:21:29.260
  • Love's way down the line.
  • 00:21:29.270 --> 00:21:31.200
  • If we could just even be kind of nice to one another,
  • 00:21:31.210 --> 00:21:33.260
  • that would be good.
  • 00:21:33.270 --> 00:21:35.130
  • Paul wrote to the Romans and he said,
  • 00:21:35.140 --> 00:21:37.020
  • "Don't let the world pour you into its mold."
  • 00:21:37.030 --> 00:21:39.250
  • Don't let the things that are happening in the world
  • 00:21:39.260 --> 00:21:42.110
  • make you different than you know you should be.
  • 00:21:42.120 --> 00:21:44.270
  • You can still be friends with those
  • 00:21:44.280 --> 00:21:46.190
  • who don't agree with you
  • 00:21:46.200 --> 00:21:48.170
  • and we as Christians ought to be the ones
  • 00:21:48.180 --> 00:21:50.220
  • showing the way to do that.
  • 00:21:50.230 --> 00:21:52.110
  • Sheila: Yeah, so when we add these eight characteristics
  • 00:21:52.120 --> 00:21:55.000
  • to our faith,
  • 00:21:55.010 --> 00:21:56.120
  • what are the blessings that we can expect from God?
  • 00:21:56.130 --> 00:21:58.150
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, I can't go through all of those.
  • 00:21:58.160 --> 00:21:59.250
  • We don't have time.
  • 00:21:59.260 --> 00:22:01.080
  • But let me just tell you, there's seven of 'em.
  • 00:22:01.090 --> 00:22:02.180
  • Five of them you get now,
  • 00:22:02.190 --> 00:22:04.040
  • two of 'em you've got to wait for.
  • 00:22:04.050 --> 00:22:07.020
  • And I love this last chapter in this book
  • 00:22:07.030 --> 00:22:08.270
  • because it tells us six times in five verses,
  • 00:22:08.280 --> 00:22:12.160
  • it talks about these things.
  • 00:22:12.170 --> 00:22:14.090
  • That little phrase, "these things."
  • 00:22:14.100 --> 00:22:16.020
  • If you do these things and here's one of the statements.
  • 00:22:16.030 --> 00:22:18.210
  • Let me just talk about this one.
  • 00:22:18.220 --> 00:22:21.060
  • This is one of the reasons that I wrote this book
  • 00:22:21.070 --> 00:22:23.220
  • and this is what grabbed me.
  • 00:22:23.230 --> 00:22:25.060
  • And listen, this is right from the Bible.
  • 00:22:25.070 --> 00:22:26.290
  • I'm not making this up.
  • 00:22:27.000 --> 00:22:29.010
  • Peter said, after talking about all these things, he said this:
  • 00:22:29.020 --> 00:22:32.010
  • "If you do these things, you will never stumble."
  • 00:22:32.020 --> 00:22:39.190
  • I thought, "Can that be true?" But then I thought back on 'em.
  • 00:22:39.200 --> 00:22:43.110
  • If you lavishly devote yourself diligently
  • 00:22:43.120 --> 00:22:46.210
  • to the growth of your life in the areas
  • 00:22:46.220 --> 00:22:49.110
  • that he describes in that chapter,
  • 00:22:49.120 --> 00:22:51.070
  • here's what he says.
  • 00:22:51.080 --> 00:22:52.170
  • If you do these things, you will never stumble.
  • 00:22:52.180 --> 00:22:54.230
  • And then he said at the end of 'em, the last one he said,
  • 00:22:54.240 --> 00:22:57.280
  • "You will go into eternity abundantly."
  • 00:22:57.290 --> 00:23:01.060
  • In other words, it doesn't say,
  • 00:23:01.070 --> 00:23:02.270
  • "If you do these things, you'll go to eternity,"
  • 00:23:02.280 --> 00:23:04.180
  • 'cause you can't work your way to heaven.
  • 00:23:04.190 --> 00:23:06.160
  • It's not about going to heaven; it's about how you go to heaven.
  • 00:23:06.170 --> 00:23:09.110
  • And he says, "If you wanna go to heaven,
  • 00:23:09.120 --> 00:23:11.120
  • kind of slipping in the back door,
  • 00:23:11.130 --> 00:23:12.240
  • you can do that.
  • 00:23:12.250 --> 00:23:14.060
  • Or if you wanna go to heaven with your hands up high,
  • 00:23:14.070 --> 00:23:16.140
  • rejoicing that you've had the privilege of honoring the Lord
  • 00:23:16.150 --> 00:23:19.120
  • and living for him during your lifetime,
  • 00:23:19.130 --> 00:23:21.120
  • you can do that."
  • 00:23:21.130 --> 00:23:22.220
  • He says, "If you do these things,
  • 00:23:22.230 --> 00:23:24.060
  • you will have an abundant entrance
  • 00:23:24.070 --> 00:23:26.200
  • into heaven," hallelujah.
  • 00:23:26.210 --> 00:23:28.120
  • Sheila: This is amazing. What a promise, wow.
  • 00:23:28.130 --> 00:23:33.080
  • That chapter has impacted me so much.
  • 00:23:33.090 --> 00:23:36.270
  • I mean, this is Peter who sat at the Lord's feet,
  • 00:23:36.280 --> 00:23:39.180
  • saying to us, "Here's this promise.
  • 00:23:39.190 --> 00:23:41.160
  • You do this and this will happen."
  • 00:23:41.170 --> 00:23:44.050
  • Dr. Jeremiah: And he didn't exactly live a perfect life.
  • 00:23:44.060 --> 00:23:45.250
  • Sheila: No.
  • 00:23:45.260 --> 00:23:47.050
  • Dr. Jeremiah: I mean, he had his moments.
  • 00:23:47.060 --> 00:23:48.150
  • He had his trouble.
  • 00:23:48.160 --> 00:23:49.250
  • Until he figured it out and got it right,
  • 00:23:49.260 --> 00:23:51.130
  • and then was honored to be crucified upside down
  • 00:23:51.140 --> 00:23:54.220
  • instead of being crucified right-side up
  • 00:23:54.230 --> 00:23:57.020
  • 'cause he felt he wasn't worthy of the Lord he loved.
  • 00:23:57.030 --> 00:24:00.220
  • Sheila: As we bring this to a conclusion, let me ask you,
  • 00:24:00.230 --> 00:24:03.020
  • how has studying this passage impacted your own life?
  • 00:24:03.030 --> 00:24:06.140
  • Dr. Jeremiah: You know, it's very emotional to me.
  • 00:24:06.150 --> 00:24:09.100
  • It's just another reminder, you know,
  • 00:24:09.110 --> 00:24:11.210
  • of the sufficiency of the Word of God.
  • 00:24:11.220 --> 00:24:14.050
  • As I mentioned at the beginning,
  • 00:24:14.060 --> 00:24:15.190
  • we have so many Christians running hither and yon
  • 00:24:15.200 --> 00:24:18.070
  • trying to find out what's wrong or what's missing or,
  • 00:24:18.080 --> 00:24:21.190
  • "Who can I talk to?
  • 00:24:21.200 --> 00:24:23.040
  • What great preacher can I listen to?
  • 00:24:23.050 --> 00:24:24.240
  • What sermon can I watch on TV? Send me that CD.
  • 00:24:24.250 --> 00:24:27.220
  • I gotta have this worship experience."
  • 00:24:27.230 --> 00:24:30.000
  • And then you read this simple letter
  • 00:24:30.010 --> 00:24:32.130
  • and it says God has given you
  • 00:24:32.140 --> 00:24:35.110
  • everything you need for life in godliness.
  • 00:24:35.120 --> 00:24:38.250
  • Now, the fact that he's given it to us as a gift,
  • 00:24:38.260 --> 00:24:41.250
  • you know, Paul wrote to the Philippians and he said,
  • 00:24:41.260 --> 00:24:43.260
  • "Work out your own salvation in fear and trembling;
  • 00:24:43.270 --> 00:24:46.240
  • for it is God who works in you
  • 00:24:46.250 --> 00:24:49.060
  • both to will and to do of his good pleasure."
  • 00:24:49.070 --> 00:24:51.080
  • In other words, God has worked it in.
  • 00:24:51.090 --> 00:24:54.000
  • Now you work it out.
  • 00:24:54.010 --> 00:24:55.190
  • God's given you this gift, and go do it.
  • 00:24:55.200 --> 00:24:58.100
  • Sheila: Please will you help me thank Dr. David Jeremiah.
  • 00:25:00.030 --> 00:25:03.070
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:25:03.080 --> 00:25:09.190
  • announcer: Today, Dr. Jeremiah gave us practical steps
