  • 00:00:04.280 --> 00:00:09.160
  • You can spend years searching for something you do not have,
  • 00:00:09.170 --> 00:00:13.080
  • only to end up where you don't want to be.
  • 00:00:13.090 --> 00:00:17.060
  • Exploring what the world has to offer,
  • 00:00:17.070 --> 00:00:20.110
  • we often find nothing.
  • 00:00:20.120 --> 00:00:24.000
  • However, your journey through
  • 00:00:24.010 --> 00:00:25.150
  • the twists and turns of this world
  • 00:00:25.160 --> 00:00:27.040
  • doesn't have to put you on the path
  • 00:00:27.050 --> 00:00:29.040
  • of discouragement and despair.
  • 00:00:29.050 --> 00:00:32.230
  • Let me tell you how to take the journey of your lifetime.
  • 00:00:32.240 --> 00:00:36.210

  • where you'll discover the peace, the purpose,
  • 00:00:39.070 --> 00:00:42.010
  • and the power you've been seeking.
  • 00:00:42.020 --> 00:00:44.280
  • It's a journey of unimaginable blessing
  • 00:00:44.290 --> 00:00:48.160
  • and here is the amazing part.
  • 00:00:48.170 --> 00:00:50.240
  • With God, you already have
  • 00:00:50.250 --> 00:00:52.220
  • everything you need for life's journey.
  • 00:00:52.230 --> 00:00:55.160
  • Not half of what you need or a whole lot of what you need.
  • 00:00:55.170 --> 00:00:58.280
  • God has given you everything you need.
  • 00:00:58.290 --> 00:01:03.210
  • God never intended for you to stumble your way
  • 00:01:03.220 --> 00:01:06.050
  • through the course of each day
  • 00:01:06.060 --> 00:01:07.220
  • and certainly not journey unprepared into your future.
  • 00:01:07.230 --> 00:01:12.030
  • So where do you wanna go?
  • 00:01:12.040 --> 00:01:14.130
  • It's time to unpack all that God has given you.
  • 00:01:14.140 --> 00:01:18.280
  • Discover how you have been equipped for this journey
  • 00:01:18.290 --> 00:01:22.060
  • and can live with confidence because you, my friend,
  • 00:01:22.070 --> 00:01:25.230
  • have everything you need.
  • 00:01:25.240 --> 00:01:28.210
  • So travel with me across the United States
  • 00:01:28.220 --> 00:01:31.230
  • and join me in New York City,
  • 00:01:31.240 --> 00:01:34.050
  • high above Central Park in The Appel Room
  • 00:01:34.060 --> 00:01:37.070
  • at Jazz at Lincoln Center for my series,
  • 00:01:37.080 --> 00:01:40.190
  • "Everything You Need."
  • 00:01:40.200 --> 00:01:42.190
  • announcer: Ladies and gentlemen, Bible teacher, author,
  • 00:01:45.040 --> 00:01:47.270
  • and television host, please welcome Sheila Walsh.
  • 00:01:47.280 --> 00:01:51.260
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:01:52.170 --> 00:02:01.270
  • Sheila Walsh: Hello, everybody.
  • 00:02:01.280 --> 00:02:04.140
  • Welcome! So glad you're here.
  • 00:02:04.150 --> 00:02:09.240
  • Beautiful evening. So glad you're here.
  • 00:02:10.050 --> 00:02:12.080
  • I've had the honor of interviewing Dr. Jeremiah
  • 00:02:12.090 --> 00:02:14.250
  • in so many important subjects
  • 00:02:14.260 --> 00:02:17.200
  • but I am particularly excited about this amazing new series.
  • 00:02:17.210 --> 00:02:22.050
  • I believe it will impact how you and I live every single day.
  • 00:02:22.060 --> 00:02:27.290
  • Life is an adventure and you're either ready
  • 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:31.100
  • to meet the challenge or you're not.
  • 00:02:31.110 --> 00:02:34.100
  • The path ahead might lead you through trying circumstances,
  • 00:02:34.110 --> 00:02:38.040
  • you might face daunting situations
  • 00:02:38.050 --> 00:02:40.210
  • or formidable obstacles.
  • 00:02:40.220 --> 00:02:43.190
  • Let me ask, do you ever feel a little unprepared
  • 00:02:43.200 --> 00:02:47.100
  • for everything that life has to throw at you?
  • 00:02:47.110 --> 00:02:50.090
  • Well, here's the great news.
  • 00:02:50.100 --> 00:02:52.080
  • You might be surprised to know that God has already given you
  • 00:02:52.090 --> 00:02:55.160
  • everything you need to live a godly life,
  • 00:02:55.170 --> 00:02:58.290
  • confident in the promises of God.
  • 00:02:59.000 --> 00:03:01.250
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:03:01.260 --> 00:03:04.060
  • And the wonderful thing about God
  • 00:03:04.070 --> 00:03:06.000
  • is God not only gives us these promises,
  • 00:03:06.010 --> 00:03:09.030
  • but he keeps every single one.
  • 00:03:09.040 --> 00:03:12.170
  • So it's time for you and I
  • 00:03:12.180 --> 00:03:13.290
  • to unpack all that God has given,
  • 00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:16.180
  • and Dr. Jeremiah is here today to encourage you
  • 00:03:16.190 --> 00:03:19.290
  • to harness the power of eight essentials
  • 00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:23.170
  • that will literally revolutionize your life.
  • 00:03:23.180 --> 00:03:26.190
  • So are you ready to get started?
  • 00:03:26.200 --> 00:03:29.090
  • Okay, please join me in welcoming to the stage
  • 00:03:29.100 --> 00:03:32.200
  • pastor, author, and beloved Bible teacher,
  • 00:03:32.210 --> 00:03:36.180
  • Dr. David Jeremiah.
  • 00:03:36.190 --> 00:03:38.270
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:03:38.280 --> 00:03:48.200
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:03:49.020 --> 00:03:51.280
  • Sheila: This new series is amazing.
  • 00:03:51.290 --> 00:03:53.260
  • "Everything You Need."
  • 00:03:53.270 --> 00:03:55.150
  • That's quite a promise.
  • 00:03:55.160 --> 00:03:57.140
  • Can you explain to us why you called this
  • 00:03:57.150 --> 00:03:59.040
  • particular teaching series, "Everything You Need"?
  • 00:03:59.050 --> 00:04:01.170
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, you know, I get most of my cues
  • 00:04:01.180 --> 00:04:03.150
  • from the Scripture and in 2 Peter chapter 1
  • 00:04:03.160 --> 00:04:06.070
  • it actually says right in the Scripture, it says:
  • 00:04:06.080 --> 00:04:09.130
  • "God has given us everything we need for life and godliness."
  • 00:04:09.140 --> 00:04:13.130
  • And I was reading that one day, aware of how many Christians
  • 00:04:13.140 --> 00:04:17.090
  • run around from place to place
  • 00:04:17.100 --> 00:04:19.040
  • trying to figure out how to get what they already have.
  • 00:04:19.050 --> 00:04:22.200
  • Sheila: Do you think we're struggling in the church
  • 00:04:22.210 --> 00:04:24.010
  • for lack of knowledge?
  • 00:04:24.020 --> 00:04:25.120
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, I think if there's one word
  • 00:04:25.130 --> 00:04:26.240
  • that describes where everybody is today,
  • 00:04:26.250 --> 00:04:28.170
  • I think it's the word "pressure."
  • 00:04:28.180 --> 00:04:30.000
  • Everybody seems like they're under a lot of pressure.
  • 00:04:30.010 --> 00:04:32.140
  • And I have to be honest with you, Sheila,
  • 00:04:32.150 --> 00:04:34.030
  • I got attracted to this particular passage
  • 00:04:34.040 --> 00:04:36.040
  • because I think it's singularly
  • 00:04:36.050 --> 00:04:37.260
  • one of the most perfect passages of Scripture in the Bible.
  • 00:04:37.270 --> 00:04:42.070
  • First of all, there's a promise at the beginning
  • 00:04:42.080 --> 00:04:44.170
  • and there's a blessing at the end
  • 00:04:44.180 --> 00:04:46.180
  • and in between are all the things you need to do
  • 00:04:46.190 --> 00:04:48.220
  • to get from the promise to the blessing.
  • 00:04:48.230 --> 00:04:50.220
  • And it's right in the text and it's--
  • 00:04:50.230 --> 00:04:52.290
  • it just grabbed me so much
  • 00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:54.260
  • I thought I gotta share that passage
  • 00:04:54.270 --> 00:04:56.150
  • because it's so powerful.
  • 00:04:56.160 --> 00:04:57.270
  • Sheila: Yeah, you're in for a great adventure.
  • 00:04:57.280 --> 00:04:59.190
  • One of the interesting things,
  • 00:04:59.200 --> 00:05:01.100
  • when Peter writes this letter and he talks about,
  • 00:05:01.110 --> 00:05:03.180
  • "To your faith add this and add that,"
  • 00:05:03.190 --> 00:05:05.290
  • you had an interesting revelation on the Greek meaning
  • 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:08.280
  • behind the word "add."
  • 00:05:08.290 --> 00:05:10.190
  • Dr. Jeremiah: You know, the Bible is so special.
  • 00:05:10.200 --> 00:05:12.130
  • You never wanna discount any word.
  • 00:05:12.140 --> 00:05:14.100
  • There's one little word, it's only mentioned
  • 00:05:14.110 --> 00:05:16.130
  • in 2 Peter 1 one time but it's assumed six times.
  • 00:05:16.140 --> 00:05:20.230
  • And it's the little word, "add."
  • 00:05:20.240 --> 00:05:22.200
  • And the Scripture goes something like this:
  • 00:05:22.210 --> 00:05:24.200
  • "When you have the special promises of God
  • 00:05:24.210 --> 00:05:26.220
  • you're to add to your faith virtue,
  • 00:05:26.230 --> 00:05:30.220
  • and to your virtue knowledge, and to your knowledge,"
  • 00:05:30.230 --> 00:05:33.110
  • and then it goes through all the eight things.
  • 00:05:33.120 --> 00:05:35.030
  • But the word "add" only is in the text one time
  • 00:05:35.040 --> 00:05:38.090
  • but it's assumed in all of the others.
  • 00:05:38.100 --> 00:05:40.010
  • So when he says, "Add to your faith virtue,
  • 00:05:40.020 --> 00:05:42.200
  • and to your virtue knowledge,"
  • 00:05:42.210 --> 00:05:44.150
  • you assume he's saying "add to--"
  • 00:05:44.160 --> 00:05:45.280
  • so the word is assumed.
  • 00:05:45.290 --> 00:05:47.280
  • But the interesting thing about the word,
  • 00:05:47.290 --> 00:05:49.120
  • it's only three letters
  • 00:05:49.130 --> 00:05:50.270
  • and it is an incredibly powerful word.
  • 00:05:50.280 --> 00:05:53.180
  • It is a word that was used
  • 00:05:53.190 --> 00:05:55.210
  • in the days of the Greek theater.
  • 00:05:55.220 --> 00:05:58.010
  • When they would put on a major play,
  • 00:05:58.020 --> 00:06:00.160
  • they would get a sponsor.
  • 00:06:00.170 --> 00:06:02.110
  • He was called a choreogos and that's the word "add"
  • 00:06:02.120 --> 00:06:06.090
  • and it meant he would go out
  • 00:06:06.100 --> 00:06:07.190
  • and he would spend all this money
  • 00:06:07.200 --> 00:06:09.050
  • and get all these people together
  • 00:06:09.060 --> 00:06:10.250
  • to try to substantially make this play
  • 00:06:10.260 --> 00:06:13.280
  • better than anybody else could make it,
  • 00:06:13.290 --> 00:06:16.050
  • and that's what the word "add" means.
  • 00:06:16.060 --> 00:06:17.280
  • And so, when Peter says we're to add to our faith virtue,
  • 00:06:17.290 --> 00:06:21.060
  • he's not talking about just, you know, throwing in a thought.
  • 00:06:21.070 --> 00:06:24.020
  • He's saying, "lavishly, completely,
  • 00:06:24.030 --> 00:06:27.010
  • like you were choreographing a play,
  • 00:06:27.020 --> 00:06:29.080
  • add to your faith virtue."
  • 00:06:29.090 --> 00:06:30.220
  • In other words, do it seriously.
  • 00:06:30.230 --> 00:06:32.190
  • Don't just give it a second thought.
  • 00:06:32.200 --> 00:06:34.120
  • Do it as seriously as a man would go out
  • 00:06:34.130 --> 00:06:37.040
  • and try to raise money to underwrite a play.
  • 00:06:37.050 --> 00:06:40.150
  • Sheila: That's huge intentionality that would impact
  • 00:06:40.160 --> 00:06:42.230
  • how you live every single day.
  • 00:06:42.240 --> 00:06:44.050
  • Dr. Jeremiah: And you know what?
  • 00:06:44.060 --> 00:06:45.150
  • I had to ask myself have I ever done anything like that?
  • 00:06:45.160 --> 00:06:48.000
  • You know, we had our moments
  • 00:06:48.010 --> 00:06:49.110
  • when we worked harder at the Christian life
  • 00:06:49.120 --> 00:06:50.270
  • but have we ever thrown everything we have at it?
  • 00:06:50.280 --> 00:06:53.020
  • Have we ever said, "Here it is, men.
  • 00:06:53.030 --> 00:06:54.270
  • This is my number one priority.
  • 00:06:54.280 --> 00:06:56.120
  • No matter what, I'm gonna make this happen
  • 00:06:56.130 --> 00:06:58.050
  • by the grace of God."
  • 00:06:58.060 --> 00:06:59.170
  • That's what the word means.
  • 00:06:59.180 --> 00:07:01.080
  • Sheila: And you talk about this great adventure
  • 00:07:01.090 --> 00:07:02.280
  • that begins with promises and ends in blessing.
  • 00:07:02.290 --> 00:07:05.260
  • But I'm wondering what about people who think,
  • 00:07:05.270 --> 00:07:07.240
  • "You know what?
  • 00:07:07.250 --> 00:07:09.040
  • I wish I'd heard this message years ago.
  • 00:07:09.050 --> 00:07:10.170
  • I'm too far beyond the promises of God."
  • 00:07:10.180 --> 00:07:12.280
  • Dr. Jeremiah: You know, the wonderful thing
  • 00:07:12.290 --> 00:07:14.090
  • about all that, Sheila, is that God's promises are eternal.
  • 00:07:14.100 --> 00:07:16.180
  • They never run out.
  • 00:07:16.190 --> 00:07:18.030
  • God miraculously meets us wherever we are
  • 00:07:18.040 --> 00:07:20.220
  • with whatever situation and, you know,
  • 00:07:20.230 --> 00:07:22.110
  • it takes some of us longer to get the message.
  • 00:07:22.120 --> 00:07:24.100
  • Isn't that true?
  • 00:07:24.110 --> 00:07:25.230
  • We have to go through more stuff until we hear him speak,
  • 00:07:25.240 --> 00:07:28.030
  • and then ultimately, because of what's going on in our life,
  • 00:07:28.040 --> 00:07:31.270
  • I mean I can't get over how many times as a pastor
  • 00:07:31.280 --> 00:07:34.080
  • I've found that the things that happen to us in our lives
  • 00:07:34.090 --> 00:07:37.220
  • are God's way of getting our attention
  • 00:07:37.230 --> 00:07:40.120
  • so he can help us understand how much he loves us
  • 00:07:40.130 --> 00:07:42.200
  • and what he wants to do to help us.
  • 00:07:42.210 --> 00:07:44.170
  • Sheila: So let's look at the things that Peter said
  • 00:07:44.180 --> 00:07:46.260
  • that we should add to our faith.
  • 00:07:46.270 --> 00:07:48.140
  • I thought it was interesting that the first thing
  • 00:07:48.150 --> 00:07:50.010
  • he talks about is diligence.
  • 00:07:50.020 --> 00:07:53.080
  • Why do you think Peter made that the very first step
  • 00:07:53.090 --> 00:07:55.210
  • in what you call, I love this,
  • 00:07:55.220 --> 00:07:57.120
  • a stumble-proof life?
  • 00:07:57.130 --> 00:07:59.090
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, I think it's important because
  • 00:07:59.100 --> 00:08:01.040
  • it's the thing we usually don't bring to the process.
  • 00:08:01.050 --> 00:08:04.230
  • You know, we hear a message.
  • 00:08:04.240 --> 00:08:06.030
  • We think we should do it but we don't do it diligently.
  • 00:08:06.040 --> 00:08:08.180
  • And the word "diligently" is a very powerful word.
  • 00:08:08.190 --> 00:08:10.250
  • It kind of goes along with the word "add."
  • 00:08:10.260 --> 00:08:13.000
  • It means make this a serious effort on your part
  • 00:08:13.010 --> 00:08:16.280
  • and do it diligently.
  • 00:08:16.290 --> 00:08:19.080
  • Practice it, work on it, don't put it off, don't say,
  • 00:08:19.090 --> 00:08:22.100
  • "I'll get around to it."
  • 00:08:22.110 --> 00:08:23.200
  • Get at it.
  • 00:08:23.210 --> 00:08:25.000
  • Do it and make it your main objective.
  • 00:08:25.010 --> 00:08:26.260
  • Sheila: I'm wondering even for some
  • 00:08:26.270 --> 00:08:28.070
  • who are younger in the faith, they might think, you know,
  • 00:08:28.080 --> 00:08:30.020
  • "That sounds like a lot of hard work."
  • 00:08:30.030 --> 00:08:32.020
  • How do you stay focused on being diligent?
  • 00:08:32.030 --> 00:08:35.100
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, it is a lot of hard work.
  • 00:08:35.110 --> 00:08:38.070
  • Most everything that's worthwhile
  • 00:08:38.080 --> 00:08:39.200
  • is a lot of hard work.
  • 00:08:39.210 --> 00:08:41.000
  • Can I get a witness on that, right?
  • 00:08:41.010 --> 00:08:43.150
  • But it is worthwhile hard work and what I found is this,
  • 00:08:43.160 --> 00:08:47.210
  • as you diligently apply yourself to the Scriptures,
  • 00:08:47.220 --> 00:08:51.110
  • God will always give you enough encouragement
  • 00:08:51.120 --> 00:08:53.140
  • in the process to keep you going.
  • 00:08:53.150 --> 00:08:55.150
  • But if you don't diligently apply yourself,
  • 00:08:55.160 --> 00:08:57.170
  • you've got nowhere to go.
  • 00:08:57.180 --> 00:08:58.270
  • You're just sort of hanging in nowhere space.
  • 00:08:58.280 --> 00:09:01.090
  • He wants us more than anything else to get serious
  • 00:09:01.100 --> 00:09:03.250
  • about what we say we believe.
  • 00:09:03.260 --> 00:09:05.240
  • Sheila: Stay tuned.
  • 00:09:06.220 --> 00:09:08.010
  • We'll be right back to continue discussing
  • 00:09:08.020 --> 00:09:09.110
  • "Everything You Need,"
  • 00:09:09.120 --> 00:09:10.210
  • the new teaching series by Dr. David Jeremiah.
  • 00:09:10.220 --> 00:09:13.220
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:09:14.090 --> 00:09:19.210
  • announcer: In Dr. Jeremiah's new book,
  • 00:09:21.140 --> 00:09:22.270
  • "Everything You Need,"
  • 00:09:22.280 --> 00:09:24.070
  • he invites you to consider how would your life change
  • 00:09:24.080 --> 00:09:27.030
  • if you had the energy to diligently fulfill
  • 00:09:27.040 --> 00:09:29.120
  • God's purpose for you,
  • 00:09:29.130 --> 00:09:31.110
  • or the confidence to always do what pleases God,
  • 00:09:31.120 --> 00:09:34.100
  • or had an intimate knowledge of his Word?
  • 00:09:34.110 --> 00:09:37.000
  • What would your faith be like if you replaced a harmful habit
  • 00:09:37.010 --> 00:09:39.190
  • with a positive one, or developed a determination
  • 00:09:39.200 --> 00:09:42.090
  • that could carry you through any difficulty?
  • 00:09:42.100 --> 00:09:44.290
  • Do you want to see yourself becoming more like Christ,
  • 00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:48.000
  • sharing his kindness and love to those around you?
  • 00:09:48.010 --> 00:09:50.270
  • It may surprise you to know that God has already given you
  • 00:09:50.280 --> 00:09:53.100
  • everything you need to do all this and more.
  • 00:09:53.110 --> 00:09:56.110
  • In "Everything You Need,"
  • 00:09:56.180 --> 00:09:58.010
  • learn practical ways to unleash the power of God in your life,
  • 00:09:58.020 --> 00:10:01.100
  • and cultivate a faith that will change you
  • 00:10:01.110 --> 00:10:03.180

  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:10:28.160 --> 00:10:32.230
  • Sheila: Thank you for joining us.
  • 00:10:33.080 --> 00:10:34.200
  • I'm Sheila Walsh, here again to talk with Dr. David Jeremiah
  • 00:10:34.210 --> 00:10:37.150
  • about his new series, "Everything You Need."
  • 00:10:37.160 --> 00:10:40.260
  • Sheila: The next thing that Peter talks about
  • 00:10:41.290 --> 00:10:43.260
  • adding to our faith is virtue.
  • 00:10:43.270 --> 00:10:45.270
  • That's not a word we use a lot in our culture anymore.
  • 00:10:45.280 --> 00:10:48.070
  • What exactly is virtue?
  • 00:10:48.080 --> 00:10:49.190
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, let me explain why we don't use it
  • 00:10:49.200 --> 00:10:50.290
  • very much 'cause there isn't very much of it in our culture.
  • 00:10:51.000 --> 00:10:53.090
  • Sheila: That's for sure.
  • 00:10:53.100 --> 00:10:55.020
  • Dr. Jeremiah: You know, virtue, the best definition of virtue
  • 00:10:55.030 --> 00:10:57.280
  • is moral excellence, doing the right thing.
  • 00:10:57.290 --> 00:11:01.190
  • There is a right and there is a wrong
  • 00:11:01.200 --> 00:11:03.140
  • and the Bible helps us understand.
  • 00:11:03.150 --> 00:11:05.140
  • You know, one of the best illustrations of it
  • 00:11:05.150 --> 00:11:07.060
  • and I talk about this in that chapter
  • 00:11:07.070 --> 00:11:08.290
  • is that when Jesus Christ was on this earth
  • 00:11:09.000 --> 00:11:12.040
  • he was the model of virtue
  • 00:11:12.050 --> 00:11:13.250
  • and the way we can see virtue in his life
  • 00:11:13.260 --> 00:11:16.190
  • more than anything else is the Bible says:
  • 00:11:16.200 --> 00:11:18.180
  • "He always did those things that pleased his Father."
  • 00:11:18.190 --> 00:11:22.140
  • That was how he lived his life.
  • 00:11:22.150 --> 00:11:24.030
  • And you know, if you wanna be a virtuous person,
  • 00:11:24.040 --> 00:11:26.080
  • you can get real technical about it.
  • 00:11:26.090 --> 00:11:28.000
  • You can make all kinds of lists but let me just give you the--
  • 00:11:28.010 --> 00:11:31.080
  • what I think is the secret.
  • 00:11:31.090 --> 00:11:33.030
  • Learn how to live your life to please the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 00:11:33.040 --> 00:11:37.090
  • Do what pleases him and, you know what?
  • 00:11:37.100 --> 00:11:41.140
  • You don't have to wonder what those things are
  • 00:11:41.150 --> 00:11:45.090
  • 'cause he tells you pretty much in his Scripture
  • 00:11:45.100 --> 00:11:47.070
  • by his life, by his testimony.
  • 00:11:47.080 --> 00:11:49.240
  • As Jesus Christ pleased his Father,
  • 00:11:49.250 --> 00:11:52.190
  • our goal is to please our Christ.
  • 00:11:52.200 --> 00:11:56.040
  • So we're in that same little construct
  • 00:11:56.050 --> 00:11:58.030
  • where if we study the life of Jesus
  • 00:11:58.040 --> 00:12:00.110
  • and we watch how he functioned with his Father,
  • 00:12:00.120 --> 00:12:03.260
  • we learn how to function with him.
  • 00:12:03.270 --> 00:12:06.230
  • Sheila: Peter says to that diligence and virtue,
  • 00:12:06.240 --> 00:12:09.140
  • then we add knowledge.
  • 00:12:09.150 --> 00:12:11.030
  • I think this is an interesting one
  • 00:12:11.040 --> 00:12:12.150
  • because we live in a time where people think technically
  • 00:12:12.160 --> 00:12:15.010
  • we have access to more knowledge
  • 00:12:15.020 --> 00:12:16.270
  • than we ever had.
  • 00:12:16.280 --> 00:12:18.120
  • But what kind of knowledge is Peter actually talking about?
  • 00:12:18.130 --> 00:12:20.280
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, let me just put a point in here
  • 00:12:20.290 --> 00:12:22.130
  • for the importance of knowledge
  • 00:12:22.140 --> 00:12:23.250
  • because there are a lot of people today
  • 00:12:23.260 --> 00:12:25.070
  • who teach that if you really wanna know Jesus Christ
  • 00:12:25.080 --> 00:12:27.220
  • you have to shut your brain off and just let your emotions rule.
  • 00:12:27.230 --> 00:12:31.040
  • That's a bunch of craziness
  • 00:12:31.050 --> 00:12:32.180
  • and I hope that you haven't heard that
  • 00:12:32.190 --> 00:12:34.000
  • and gotten caught up in it
  • 00:12:34.010 --> 00:12:35.100
  • because we can't do anything with what we don't know.
  • 00:12:35.110 --> 00:12:38.160
  • It's important to know some things.
  • 00:12:38.170 --> 00:12:40.120
  • In the Bible we're taught, first of all,
  • 00:12:40.130 --> 00:12:42.260
  • to study the Scripture
  • 00:12:42.270 --> 00:12:44.090
  • and know what the Scripture says.
  • 00:12:44.100 --> 00:12:46.010
  • There's some homework involved in that.
  • 00:12:46.020 --> 00:12:48.010
  • It's blessed homework but it's still homework.
  • 00:12:48.020 --> 00:12:50.130
  • You know, the Bible is open to those
  • 00:12:50.140 --> 00:12:52.220
  • who will take it seriously
  • 00:12:52.230 --> 00:12:54.140
  • and then once you study the Scripture
  • 00:12:54.150 --> 00:12:56.260
  • you realize that in studying the Scripture
  • 00:12:56.270 --> 00:12:59.050
  • you're learning about Christ.
  • 00:12:59.060 --> 00:13:00.260
  • Somebody once told me we can almost tell
  • 00:13:00.270 --> 00:13:02.230
  • what our relationship with Christ really is
  • 00:13:02.240 --> 00:13:05.040
  • when we examine what our relationship
  • 00:13:05.050 --> 00:13:06.250
  • with the Scripture is.
  • 00:13:06.260 --> 00:13:08.220
  • In other words, we can say, "I love the Lord,"
  • 00:13:08.230 --> 00:13:11.000
  • but if you don't ever read his love letters to you,
  • 00:13:11.010 --> 00:13:12.250
  • how does that work?
  • 00:13:12.260 --> 00:13:14.090
  • So you study the Scripture, you read the Word of God,
  • 00:13:14.100 --> 00:13:17.180
  • you learn what the Word of God says,
  • 00:13:17.190 --> 00:13:19.170
  • and the more you study, the more you know,
  • 00:13:19.180 --> 00:13:21.280
  • the hungrier you'll get for more information
  • 00:13:21.290 --> 00:13:24.030
  • and I can say that after 50 years of doing that.
  • 00:13:24.040 --> 00:13:27.010
  • I mean, that is--the more you know,
  • 00:13:27.020 --> 00:13:28.150
  • the more you realize you don't know.
  • 00:13:28.160 --> 00:13:29.290
  • That's one thing for sure. And the more you want to know.
  • 00:13:30.000 --> 00:13:33.100
  • Sheila: I was wondering for someone who thinks,
  • 00:13:33.110 --> 00:13:35.030
  • "Well, I don't have the wealth of biblical knowledge
  • 00:13:35.040 --> 00:13:37.130
  • that you have.
  • 00:13:37.140 --> 00:13:38.230
  • I would love to know more of God's Word.
  • 00:13:38.240 --> 00:13:40.090
  • Where do I even start?
  • 00:13:40.100 --> 00:13:42.080
  • I mean, do I just buy a Bible and open it up
  • 00:13:42.090 --> 00:13:43.260
  • and hope for the best?"
  • 00:13:43.270 --> 00:13:46.010
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, let me just tell you.
  • 00:13:46.020 --> 00:13:47.110
  • We had a young man at our church who was born in India.
  • 00:13:47.120 --> 00:13:50.280
  • His parents told him that he was a cursed child
  • 00:13:50.290 --> 00:13:53.130
  • because something had happened
  • 00:13:53.140 --> 00:13:54.250
  • during his mother's pregnancy with him
  • 00:13:54.260 --> 00:13:57.170
  • and so he thought that he was cursed
  • 00:13:57.180 --> 00:13:59.250
  • and one day he went home and some missionary
  • 00:13:59.260 --> 00:14:02.210
  • had been to his house and had left a Bible there.
  • 00:14:02.220 --> 00:14:05.260
  • And he started reading this Bible as an eight-year-old boy.
  • 00:14:05.270 --> 00:14:09.140
  • By the time he was 12,
  • 00:14:09.150 --> 00:14:10.260
  • he'd read much of the Scripture and before he turned a teenager,
  • 00:14:10.270 --> 00:14:13.160
  • he had accepted Christ.
  • 00:14:13.170 --> 00:14:15.180
  • That's the power of the Word of God.
  • 00:14:15.190 --> 00:14:17.150
  • The Word of God, when it's unleashed in somebody's life,
  • 00:14:17.160 --> 00:14:20.090
  • it's amazing what happens.
  • 00:14:20.100 --> 00:14:22.090
  • Sheila: You have faithfully taught the Word of God
  • 00:14:22.100 --> 00:14:24.090
  • for over 50 years.
  • 00:14:24.100 --> 00:14:26.090
  • How do you stay motivated to still get excited
  • 00:14:26.100 --> 00:14:29.020
  • to dive in one more time?
  • 00:14:29.030 --> 00:14:30.280
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, the Bible says that
  • 00:14:30.290 --> 00:14:32.080
  • "God's mercies are new every morning."
  • 00:14:32.090 --> 00:14:34.100
  • Isn't that true?
  • 00:14:34.110 --> 00:14:35.250
  • One of the blessings for me at this stage of my life
  • 00:14:35.260 --> 00:14:38.110
  • is I've taught most of the Scripture
  • 00:14:38.120 --> 00:14:40.090
  • and now when I'm studying a portion of Scripture,
  • 00:14:40.100 --> 00:14:43.010
  • God brings to my mind the things that I've studied about,
  • 00:14:43.020 --> 00:14:45.110
  • other portions that have to do with this.
  • 00:14:45.120 --> 00:14:48.060
  • And it's just kind of that wonderful mystery
  • 00:14:48.070 --> 00:14:50.240
  • that goes on in the Scripture.
  • 00:14:50.250 --> 00:14:53.080
  • Sheila: The next thing that Peter says
  • 00:14:53.090 --> 00:14:54.220
  • we should add to our faith is self-control.
  • 00:14:54.230 --> 00:14:57.260
  • One of the things I found encouraging
  • 00:14:57.270 --> 00:14:59.150
  • in your teaching in this series is you say
  • 00:14:59.160 --> 00:15:01.040
  • it's really more spirit-control than self-control.
  • 00:15:01.050 --> 00:15:04.120
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Yeah, a lot of times,
  • 00:15:04.130 --> 00:15:05.220
  • we blame our body for the things that go on
  • 00:15:05.230 --> 00:15:08.140
  • and we should, probably.
  • 00:15:08.150 --> 00:15:10.080
  • But most of the problems we have with sin
  • 00:15:10.090 --> 00:15:11.290
  • don't start in our body.
  • 00:15:12.000 --> 00:15:13.090
  • They start in our mind.
  • 00:15:13.100 --> 00:15:14.270
  • What we open up our minds to is what allows us
  • 00:15:14.280 --> 00:15:17.120
  • to go down the road that gets us in trouble.
  • 00:15:17.130 --> 00:15:20.020
  • Let me just say more than ever before
  • 00:15:20.030 --> 00:15:22.030
  • because of the Internet
  • 00:15:22.040 --> 00:15:23.140
  • and because of what used to be entertainment,
  • 00:15:23.150 --> 00:15:25.200
  • I told our people that we just did something in our house
  • 00:15:25.210 --> 00:15:28.120
  • and got a new system that's got, like,
  • 00:15:28.130 --> 00:15:30.120
  • 100 and 150 channels or whatever.
  • 00:15:30.130 --> 00:15:33.140
  • And one night I just sat down
  • 00:15:33.150 --> 00:15:35.030
  • and I clicked through all those channels
  • 00:15:35.040 --> 00:15:36.130
  • and I couldn't find one single thing
  • 00:15:36.140 --> 00:15:38.060
  • that I thought was worth watching.
  • 00:15:38.070 --> 00:15:39.290
  • Out of 150 channels.
  • 00:15:40.000 --> 00:15:42.130
  • Does that say anything about our culture?
  • 00:15:42.140 --> 00:15:44.220
  • I mean, thank God for sports.
  • 00:15:44.230 --> 00:15:46.270
  • Sheila: Amen.
  • 00:15:48.030 --> 00:15:49.120
  • [laughing]
  • 00:15:49.130 --> 00:15:52.080
  • The next thing that Peter addresses is perseverance.
  • 00:15:53.010 --> 00:15:56.270
  • What does it really mean to persevere?
  • 00:15:56.280 --> 00:15:59.250
  • Dr. Jeremiah: The best way to say that
  • 00:15:59.260 --> 00:16:01.070
  • is perseverance is continuing when you don't want to.
  • 00:16:01.080 --> 00:16:05.240
  • Here's what I've learned. Somebody told me this.
  • 00:16:05.250 --> 00:16:07.250
  • When we think we can't do anymore,
  • 00:16:07.260 --> 00:16:10.070
  • there's still 60% more that we can do.
  • 00:16:10.080 --> 00:16:14.200
  • We have our own little personal limitations
  • 00:16:14.210 --> 00:16:17.080
  • that are comfortable to us.
  • 00:16:17.090 --> 00:16:19.060
  • Perseverance is going beyond where you think you can go.
  • 00:16:19.070 --> 00:16:22.200
  • All of us here, if we're Christians,
  • 00:16:22.210 --> 00:16:25.020
  • we're Christians because somebody persevered.
  • 00:16:25.030 --> 00:16:28.070
  • Somebody preached the gospel when it wasn't easy.
  • 00:16:28.080 --> 00:16:30.290
  • Somebody came to your home
  • 00:16:31.000 --> 00:16:32.110
  • when they'd rather been home watching TV.
  • 00:16:32.120 --> 00:16:34.070
  • Somebody prayed for you.
  • 00:16:34.080 --> 00:16:36.060
  • Perseverance is one of the building blocks
  • 00:16:36.070 --> 00:16:38.100
  • of who we are in Christ.
  • 00:16:38.110 --> 00:16:40.010
  • Aren't you glad that Jesus Christ persevered
  • 00:16:40.020 --> 00:16:42.150
  • all the way to the cross, amen?
  • 00:16:42.160 --> 00:16:44.290
  • Sheila: Amen. I love how you describe it.
  • 00:16:45.000 --> 00:16:47.270
  • In this teaching you actually call it
  • 00:16:47.280 --> 00:16:49.270
  • "relentless determination."
  • 00:16:49.280 --> 00:16:52.030
  • Dr. Jeremiah: That's what it is.
  • 00:16:52.040 --> 00:16:53.160
  • When you're involved in serving the Lord,
  • 00:16:53.170 --> 00:16:56.270
  • the enemy comes along and he whispers in your heart,
  • 00:16:56.280 --> 00:16:59.080
  • "That's enough.
  • 00:16:59.090 --> 00:17:00.200
  • You don't need to do that anymore.
  • 00:17:00.210 --> 00:17:02.000
  • You're finished."
  • 00:17:02.010 --> 00:17:03.100
  • But you don't do that.
  • 00:17:03.110 --> 00:17:04.200
  • Relentlessly, you pursue, you go forward.
  • 00:17:04.210 --> 00:17:07.030
  • You know, the Bible teaches us
  • 00:17:07.040 --> 00:17:08.130
  • to live our lives in day-tight compartments.
  • 00:17:08.140 --> 00:17:10.070
  • The Bible says: "Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof."
  • 00:17:10.190 --> 00:17:13.270
  • And in the New Testament, says: "Don't worry about tomorrow,
  • 00:17:13.280 --> 00:17:17.190
  • for tomorrow will worry about itself."
  • 00:17:17.200 --> 00:17:20.060
  • You know, if we have something that's hard for us to do
  • 00:17:20.070 --> 00:17:24.000
  • and you get caught up in the immensity of it,
  • 00:17:24.010 --> 00:17:26.150
  • you will never be able to achieve it.
  • 00:17:26.160 --> 00:17:28.290
  • But you can achieve what comes tomorrow.
  • 00:17:29.000 --> 00:17:31.170
  • And God never gives us more.
  • 00:17:31.180 --> 00:17:33.120
  • You know, he's-- isn't it interesting?
  • 00:17:33.130 --> 00:17:35.020
  • God created the world like this.
  • 00:17:35.030 --> 00:17:36.250
  • He gives us days and hours and weeks and years.
  • 00:17:36.260 --> 00:17:40.270
  • He could have created this just like an endless eternity
  • 00:17:40.280 --> 00:17:45.080
  • even on this earth.
  • 00:17:45.090 --> 00:17:47.040
  • But I think those places are good for us.
  • 00:17:47.050 --> 00:17:50.130
  • It's good that we have a week we can look back on.
  • 00:17:50.140 --> 00:17:53.090
  • It's good that we have a day that we can say,
  • 00:17:53.100 --> 00:17:55.190
  • "I don't know how I'm gonna get there,
  • 00:17:55.200 --> 00:17:57.000
  • but I can get here."
  • 00:17:57.010 --> 00:17:58.210
  • And I'd just encourage people,
  • 00:17:58.220 --> 00:18:00.120
  • try not to get so caught up in the past that you get depressed.
  • 00:18:00.130 --> 00:18:03.190
  • And don't worry about the future 'cause you're not there yet.
  • 00:18:03.200 --> 00:18:06.200
  • Live today and ask God to give you the grace for today
  • 00:18:06.210 --> 00:18:09.210
  • and when you do that, he will do that.
  • 00:18:09.220 --> 00:18:11.080
  • Sheila: Yeah, that's beautiful.
  • 00:18:11.090 --> 00:18:13.040
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:18:13.050 --> 00:18:16.110
  • Sheila: The next thing that Peter encourages us
  • 00:18:16.120 --> 00:18:18.160
  • to add to our faith is godliness.
  • 00:18:18.170 --> 00:18:20.250
  • And godliness is one of those words
  • 00:18:20.260 --> 00:18:22.070
  • that just seems like it's kinda unattainable.
  • 00:18:22.080 --> 00:18:24.160
  • It's very lofty--
  • 00:18:24.170 --> 00:18:26.010
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, you know what, Sheila,
  • 00:18:26.020 --> 00:18:27.110
  • can I just be honest with you?
  • 00:18:27.120 --> 00:18:28.210
  • When I saw that list, I was pretty excited
  • 00:18:28.220 --> 00:18:30.180
  • about everything that was on that list.
  • 00:18:30.190 --> 00:18:32.110
  • When I saw "godliness," I got, "Oh, no,"
  • 00:18:32.120 --> 00:18:36.070
  • because, you know, that's an intimidating word, isn't it?
  • 00:18:36.080 --> 00:18:38.220
  • Sheila: It is.
  • 00:18:38.230 --> 00:18:40.020
  • Dr. Jeremiah: And it's been used in the wrong way
  • 00:18:40.030 --> 00:18:41.140
  • by a lot of people
  • 00:18:41.150 --> 00:18:42.240
  • and sometimes it can make you feel like,
  • 00:18:42.250 --> 00:18:44.110
  • "Well, I'm not even in this race.
  • 00:18:44.120 --> 00:18:45.280
  • Why am I even-- I don't even--
  • 00:18:45.290 --> 00:18:47.160
  • I don't even belong in a conversation about that."
  • 00:18:47.170 --> 00:18:50.020
  • But let's face it.
  • 00:18:50.030 --> 00:18:51.170
  • When you break that word down, it's simply this.
  • 00:18:51.180 --> 00:18:54.190
  • To be godly is to try to be like God.
  • 00:18:54.200 --> 00:18:57.270
  • That's all it means. To do what God would do.
  • 00:18:57.280 --> 00:19:00.110
  • And it's not like we don't have an illustration
  • 00:19:00.120 --> 00:19:03.000
  • because God in heaven, nobody has seen,
  • 00:19:03.010 --> 00:19:06.100
  • you can't see him and live.
  • 00:19:06.110 --> 00:19:08.070
  • So he sent his Son down here who was God in the flesh
  • 00:19:08.080 --> 00:19:12.140
  • and allowed us to witness his life for 30-some years
  • 00:19:12.150 --> 00:19:16.170
  • and see what it looks like to live godly.
  • 00:19:16.180 --> 00:19:19.280
  • And it's not all the high stuff that we put.
  • 00:19:19.290 --> 00:19:23.140
  • You know what it was?
  • 00:19:23.150 --> 00:19:24.240
  • It was helping a woman who was caught in adultery.
  • 00:19:24.250 --> 00:19:28.100
  • It was helping a father who lost his child.
  • 00:19:28.110 --> 00:19:31.260
  • It was reaching out to people with love and kindness.
  • 00:19:31.270 --> 00:19:34.280
  • When you see the life of Jesus on this earth and what he did,
  • 00:19:34.290 --> 00:19:38.060
  • it's not all this doctrinal stuff we think about.
  • 00:19:38.070 --> 00:19:41.030
  • It's the love and ministry we have with other people.
  • 00:19:41.040 --> 00:19:43.210
  • That's what it means to be godly.
  • 00:19:43.220 --> 00:19:45.230
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:19:45.240 --> 00:19:49.120
  • Sheila: I can't think of a time in our culture
  • 00:19:49.130 --> 00:19:51.080
  • or in the church when we've needed this more.
  • 00:19:51.090 --> 00:19:53.160
  • He talks about brotherly kindness.
  • 00:19:53.170 --> 00:19:56.210
  • Why do you think Peter included that in this list?
  • 00:19:56.220 --> 00:20:00.160
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, because he lived in a time
  • 00:20:00.170 --> 00:20:02.090
  • similar to us.
  • 00:20:02.100 --> 00:20:04.120
  • He lived in a time when people went about
  • 00:20:04.130 --> 00:20:08.120
  • talking about love and not examining
  • 00:20:08.130 --> 00:20:11.070
  • their own lives to see if it was true.
  • 00:20:11.080 --> 00:20:13.170
  • And many of these chapters, you guys,
  • 00:20:13.180 --> 00:20:15.040
  • when we wrote this book,
  • 00:20:15.050 --> 00:20:17.020
  • I would take the quality that's on the list
  • 00:20:17.030 --> 00:20:19.110
  • and then I'd try to find the central passage
  • 00:20:19.120 --> 00:20:21.160
  • in the New Testament that taught that,
  • 00:20:21.170 --> 00:20:23.120
  • and the central passage for that one is in Ephesians chapter 4.
  • 00:20:23.130 --> 00:20:27.190
  • Well, you know this passage. If I say it, you'll remember it.
  • 00:20:27.200 --> 00:20:30.060
  • "Be kind one to another, tenderhearted,
  • 00:20:30.070 --> 00:20:32.220
  • forgiving one another,
  • 00:20:32.230 --> 00:20:34.050
  • even as God for Christ's sake has forgiven you."
  • 00:20:34.060 --> 00:20:36.260
  • Isn't it a wonderful passage?
  • 00:20:36.270 --> 00:20:38.140
  • That's what brotherly kindness is.
  • 00:20:38.150 --> 00:20:40.110
  • And if you unlock that passage, there's, like,
  • 00:20:40.120 --> 00:20:42.150
  • four or five points in there that teach you what it means
  • 00:20:42.160 --> 00:20:45.210
  • to be kind and loving to one another,
  • 00:20:45.220 --> 00:20:49.050
  • including a whole little section on not being angry.
  • 00:20:49.060 --> 00:20:53.040
  • And if you go back to Ephesians 4,
  • 00:20:53.050 --> 00:20:55.200
  • it's about verse 25 or so, and read that section,
  • 00:20:55.210 --> 00:20:58.260
  • you will have Paul's sermon on brotherly kindness
  • 00:20:58.270 --> 00:21:03.280
  • and what it looks like and it's all real simple.
  • 00:21:03.290 --> 00:21:07.030
  • I mean, it's not rocket science.
  • 00:21:07.040 --> 00:21:09.000
  • It's just the everyday things that we do
  • 00:21:09.010 --> 00:21:11.230
  • that make a difference in who we are.
  • 00:21:11.240 --> 00:21:13.210
  • Sheila: Well, we've come to the conclusion of Peter's list
  • 00:21:13.220 --> 00:21:15.290
  • and we're told to add love to our faith.
  • 00:21:16.000 --> 00:21:18.160
  • And you point out the New Living Translation
  • 00:21:18.170 --> 00:21:20.130
  • describes it as love for everyone.
  • 00:21:20.140 --> 00:21:23.170
  • How do we do that when there's, I mean,
  • 00:21:23.180 --> 00:21:26.190
  • I know there'll be many people out there
  • 00:21:26.200 --> 00:21:28.010
  • who have been seriously hurt by someone.
  • 00:21:28.020 --> 00:21:29.250
  • How do you love when you've been wounded?
  • 00:21:29.260 --> 00:21:32.230
  • Dr. Jeremiah: It's not natural. Sheila: No.
  • 00:21:32.240 --> 00:21:34.100
  • Dr. Jeremiah: No, but it's supernatural.
  • 00:21:34.110 --> 00:21:37.010
  • You can only love that person through the love of Christ.
  • 00:21:37.020 --> 00:21:40.020
  • And I think the key to us all, for all of us,
  • 00:21:40.030 --> 00:21:42.080
  • is to realize how unlovely we were
  • 00:21:42.090 --> 00:21:46.160
  • when Christ died for us.
  • 00:21:46.170 --> 00:21:48.070
  • The Bible even says it, you know?
  • 00:21:48.080 --> 00:21:50.110
  • The Bible says it in so many different ways.
  • 00:21:50.120 --> 00:21:52.040
  • He died for us when there really
  • 00:21:52.050 --> 00:21:53.160
  • was no reason for him to do that.
  • 00:21:53.170 --> 00:21:55.200
  • And here's what I've been learning in my life, Sheila.
  • 00:21:55.210 --> 00:21:58.150
  • We love others out of the reservoir of God's love for us.
  • 00:21:58.160 --> 00:22:03.200
  • Sheila: That's so true.
  • 00:22:03.210 --> 00:22:06.130
  • Our culture, particularly at the moment
  • 00:22:06.140 --> 00:22:09.130
  • in the days we're living in, seems very polarized,
  • 00:22:09.140 --> 00:22:11.240
  • you know, that we're all one side or another.
  • 00:22:11.250 --> 00:22:14.130
  • How do we practice that love in that atmosphere?
  • 00:22:14.140 --> 00:22:18.070
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, you know, I'm not really sure where to go
  • 00:22:18.080 --> 00:22:21.020
  • with what I know you're talking about.
  • 00:22:21.030 --> 00:22:23.070
  • Today, in our culture, it's not even a matter of love anymore.
  • 00:22:23.080 --> 00:22:26.230
  • It's just--it's a matter of civility, you know?
  • 00:22:26.240 --> 00:22:29.230
  • Love's way down the line.
  • 00:22:29.240 --> 00:22:31.170
  • If we could just even be kind of nice to one another,
  • 00:22:31.180 --> 00:22:33.230
  • that would be good.
  • 00:22:33.240 --> 00:22:35.100
  • Paul wrote to the Romans and he said,
  • 00:22:35.110 --> 00:22:36.290
  • "Don't let the world pour you into its mold."
  • 00:22:37.000 --> 00:22:39.220
  • Don't let the things that are happening in the world
  • 00:22:39.230 --> 00:22:42.080
  • make you different than you know you should be.
  • 00:22:42.090 --> 00:22:44.240
  • You can still be friends with those
  • 00:22:44.250 --> 00:22:46.160
  • who don't agree with you
  • 00:22:46.170 --> 00:22:48.140
  • and we as Christians ought to be the ones
  • 00:22:48.150 --> 00:22:50.190
  • showing the way to do that.
  • 00:22:50.200 --> 00:22:52.080
  • Sheila: Yeah, so when we add these eight characteristics
  • 00:22:52.090 --> 00:22:54.270
  • to our faith,
  • 00:22:54.280 --> 00:22:56.090
  • what are the blessings that we can expect from God?
  • 00:22:56.100 --> 00:22:58.120
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, I can't go through all of those.
  • 00:22:58.130 --> 00:22:59.220
  • We don't have time.
  • 00:22:59.230 --> 00:23:01.050
  • But let me just tell you, there's seven of 'em.
  • 00:23:01.060 --> 00:23:02.150
  • Five of them you get now,
  • 00:23:02.160 --> 00:23:04.010
  • two of 'em you've got to wait for.
  • 00:23:04.020 --> 00:23:06.290
  • And I love this last chapter in this book
  • 00:23:07.000 --> 00:23:08.240
  • because it tells us six times in five verses,
  • 00:23:08.250 --> 00:23:12.130
  • it talks about these things.
  • 00:23:12.140 --> 00:23:14.060
  • That little phrase, "these things."
  • 00:23:14.070 --> 00:23:15.290
  • If you do these things and here's one of the statements.
  • 00:23:16.000 --> 00:23:18.180
  • Let me just talk about this one.
  • 00:23:18.190 --> 00:23:21.030
  • This is one of the reasons that I wrote this book
  • 00:23:21.040 --> 00:23:23.190
  • and this is what grabbed me.
  • 00:23:23.200 --> 00:23:25.030
  • And listen, this is right from the Bible.
  • 00:23:25.040 --> 00:23:26.260
  • I'm not making this up.
  • 00:23:26.270 --> 00:23:28.280
  • Peter said, after talking about all these things, he said this:
  • 00:23:28.290 --> 00:23:31.280
  • "If you do these things, you will never stumble."
  • 00:23:31.290 --> 00:23:39.160
  • I thought, "Can that be true?" But then I thought back on 'em.
  • 00:23:39.170 --> 00:23:43.080
  • If you lavishly devote yourself diligently
  • 00:23:43.090 --> 00:23:46.180
  • to the growth of your life in the areas
  • 00:23:46.190 --> 00:23:49.080
  • that he describes in that chapter,
  • 00:23:49.090 --> 00:23:51.040
  • here's what he says.
  • 00:23:51.050 --> 00:23:52.140
  • If you do these things, you will never stumble.
  • 00:23:52.150 --> 00:23:54.200
  • And then he said at the end of 'em, the last one he said,
  • 00:23:54.210 --> 00:23:57.250
  • "You will go into eternity abundantly."
  • 00:23:57.260 --> 00:24:01.030
  • In other words, it doesn't say,
  • 00:24:01.040 --> 00:24:02.240
  • "If you do these things, you'll go to eternity,"
  • 00:24:02.250 --> 00:24:04.150
  • 'cause you can't work your way to heaven.
  • 00:24:04.160 --> 00:24:06.130
  • It's not about going to heaven; it's about how you go to heaven.
  • 00:24:06.140 --> 00:24:09.080
  • And he says, "If you wanna go to heaven,
  • 00:24:09.090 --> 00:24:11.090
  • kind of slipping in the back door,
  • 00:24:11.100 --> 00:24:12.210
  • you can do that.
  • 00:24:12.220 --> 00:24:14.030
  • Or if you wanna go to heaven with your hands up high,
  • 00:24:14.040 --> 00:24:16.110
  • rejoicing that you've had the privilege of honoring the Lord
  • 00:24:16.120 --> 00:24:19.090
  • and living for him during your lifetime,
  • 00:24:19.100 --> 00:24:21.090
  • you can do that."
  • 00:24:21.100 --> 00:24:22.190
  • He says, "If you do these things,
  • 00:24:22.200 --> 00:24:24.030
  • you will have an abundant entrance
  • 00:24:24.040 --> 00:24:26.170
  • into heaven," hallelujah.
  • 00:24:26.180 --> 00:24:28.090
  • Sheila: This is amazing. What a promise, wow.
  • 00:24:28.100 --> 00:24:33.050
  • That chapter has impacted me so much.
  • 00:24:33.060 --> 00:24:36.240
  • I mean, this is Peter who sat at the Lord's feet,
  • 00:24:36.250 --> 00:24:39.150
  • saying to us, "Here's this promise.
  • 00:24:39.160 --> 00:24:41.130
  • You do this and this will happen."
  • 00:24:41.140 --> 00:24:44.020
  • Dr. Jeremiah: And he didn't exactly live a perfect life.
  • 00:24:44.030 --> 00:24:45.220
  • Sheila: No.
  • 00:24:45.230 --> 00:24:47.020
  • Dr. Jeremiah: I mean, he had his moments.
  • 00:24:47.030 --> 00:24:48.120
  • He had his trouble.
  • 00:24:48.130 --> 00:24:49.220
  • Until he figured it out and got it right,
  • 00:24:49.230 --> 00:24:51.100
  • and then was honored to be crucified upside down
  • 00:24:51.110 --> 00:24:54.190
  • instead of being crucified right-side up
  • 00:24:54.200 --> 00:24:56.290
  • 'cause he felt he wasn't worthy of the Lord he loved.
  • 00:24:57.000 --> 00:25:00.190
  • Sheila: As we bring this to a conclusion, let me ask you,
  • 00:25:00.200 --> 00:25:02.290
  • how has studying this passage impacted your own life?
  • 00:25:03.000 --> 00:25:06.110
  • Dr. Jeremiah: You know, it's very emotional to me.
  • 00:25:06.120 --> 00:25:09.070
  • It's just another reminder, you know,
  • 00:25:09.080 --> 00:25:11.180
  • of the sufficiency of the Word of God.
  • 00:25:11.190 --> 00:25:14.020
  • As I mentioned at the beginning,
  • 00:25:14.030 --> 00:25:15.160
  • we have so many Christians running hither and yon
  • 00:25:15.170 --> 00:25:18.040
  • trying to find out what's wrong or what's missing or,
  • 00:25:18.050 --> 00:25:21.160
  • "Who can I talk to?
  • 00:25:21.170 --> 00:25:23.010
  • What great preacher can I listen to?
  • 00:25:23.020 --> 00:25:24.210
  • What sermon can I watch on TV? Send me that CD.
  • 00:25:24.220 --> 00:25:27.190
  • I gotta have this worship experience."
  • 00:25:27.200 --> 00:25:29.270
  • And then you read this simple letter
  • 00:25:29.280 --> 00:25:32.100
  • and it says God has given you
  • 00:25:32.110 --> 00:25:35.080
  • everything you need for life in godliness.
  • 00:25:35.090 --> 00:25:38.220
  • Now, the fact that he's given it to us as a gift,
  • 00:25:38.230 --> 00:25:41.220
  • you know, Paul wrote to the Philippians and he said,
  • 00:25:41.230 --> 00:25:43.230
  • "Work out your own salvation in fear and trembling;
  • 00:25:43.240 --> 00:25:46.210
  • for it is God who works in you
  • 00:25:46.220 --> 00:25:49.030
  • both to will and to do of his good pleasure."
  • 00:25:49.040 --> 00:25:51.050
  • In other words, God has worked it in.
  • 00:25:51.060 --> 00:25:53.270
  • Now you work it out.
  • 00:25:53.280 --> 00:25:55.160
  • God's given you this gift, and go do it.
  • 00:25:55.170 --> 00:25:58.070
  • Sheila: Please will you help me thank Dr. David Jeremiah.
  • 00:25:59.280 --> 00:26:03.040
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:26:03.050 --> 00:26:09.160
  • announcer: Today, Dr. Jeremiah gave us practical steps
  • 00:26:12.110 --> 00:26:15.020
  • to unleash the power of God's promises in our lives.

  • for a stumble-proof life.
  • 00:26:59.270 --> 00:27:02.080
  • The first step to claiming the promises and blessings
  • 00:27:02.090 --> 00:27:04.250

  • that explores the life of Jesus, available now on the App Store.
  • 00:29:19.230 --> 00:29:23.150
  • Dr. David Jeremiah: Life moves so fast,
  • 00:29:31.170 --> 00:29:34.230
  • but is it taking you where you want to go?
  • 00:29:34.240 --> 00:29:39.160
  • You can spend years searching for something you do not have,
  • 00:29:39.170 --> 00:29:43.080

  • 00:29:43.090 --> 00:29:47.060
  • Exploring what the world has to offer,
  • 00:29:47.070 --> 00:29:50.110
  • we often find nothing.
  • 00:29:50.120 --> 00:29:54.000
  • However, your journey through
  • 00:29:54.010 --> 00:29:55.150
  • the twists and turns of this world
  • 00:29:55.160 --> 00:29:57.040
  • doesn't have to put you on the path
  • 00:29:57.050 --> 00:29:59.040
  • of discouragement and despair.
  • 00:29:59.050 --> 00:30:02.230
  • Let me tell you how to take the journey of your lifetime.
  • 00:30:02.240 --> 00:30:06.210
  • It's an adventure with God as your guide
  • 00:30:06.220 --> 00:30:09.060
  • where you'll discover the peace, the purpose,
  • 00:30:09.070 --> 00:30:12.010
  • and the power you've been seeking.
  • 00:30:12.020 --> 00:30:14.280
  • It's a journey of unimaginable blessing
  • 00:30:14.290 --> 00:30:18.160
  • and here is the amazing part.
  • 00:30:18.170 --> 00:30:20.240
  • With God, you already have
  • 00:30:20.250 --> 00:30:22.220
  • everything you need for life's journey.
  • 00:30:22.230 --> 00:30:25.160
  • Not half of what you need or a whole lot of what you need.
  • 00:30:25.170 --> 00:30:28.280
  • God has given you everything you need.
  • 00:30:28.290 --> 00:30:33.190
  • God never intended for you to stumble your way
  • 00:30:33.200 --> 00:30:36.030
  • through the course of each day
  • 00:30:36.040 --> 00:30:37.200
  • and certainly not journey unprepared into your future.
  • 00:30:37.210 --> 00:30:42.010
  • So where do you wanna go?
  • 00:30:42.020 --> 00:30:44.110

  • high above Central Park in The Appel Room

  • at Jazz at Lincoln Center for my series,

  • announcer: Ladies and gentlemen, Bible teacher, author,
  • 00:31:15.040 --> 00:31:17.270
  • and television host, please welcome Sheila Walsh.
  • 00:31:17.280 --> 00:31:21.260
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:31:22.170 --> 00:31:31.250
  • Sheila Walsh: Hello, everybody.
  • 00:31:31.260 --> 00:31:34.120
  • Welcome! So glad you're here.
  • 00:31:34.130 --> 00:31:38.290
  • Beautiful evening. So glad you're here.
  • 00:31:39.000 --> 00:31:41.030
  • I've had the honor of interviewing Dr. Jeremiah
  • 00:31:41.040 --> 00:31:43.200
  • in so many important subjects
  • 00:31:43.210 --> 00:31:46.150
  • but I am particularly excited about this amazing new series.
  • 00:31:46.160 --> 00:31:51.000
  • I believe it will impact how you and I live every single day.
  • 00:31:51.010 --> 00:31:56.240
  • Life is an adventure and you're either ready
  • 00:31:56.250 --> 00:32:00.070
  • to meet the challenge or you're not.
  • 00:32:00.080 --> 00:32:03.070
  • The path ahead might lead you through trying circumstances,
  • 00:32:03.080 --> 00:32:07.010
  • you might face daunting situations
  • 00:32:07.020 --> 00:32:09.180
  • or formidable obstacles.
  • 00:32:09.190 --> 00:32:12.160
  • Let me ask, do you ever feel a little unprepared
  • 00:32:12.170 --> 00:32:16.070
  • for everything that life has to throw at you?
  • 00:32:16.080 --> 00:32:19.060
  • Well, here's the great news.
  • 00:32:19.070 --> 00:32:21.050
  • You might be surprised to know that God has already given you
  • 00:32:21.060 --> 00:32:24.130
  • everything you need to live a godly life,
  • 00:32:24.140 --> 00:32:27.260
  • confident in the promises of God.
  • 00:32:27.270 --> 00:32:30.200
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:32:30.210 --> 00:32:33.010
  • And the wonderful thing about God
  • 00:32:33.020 --> 00:32:34.250
  • is God not only gives us these promises,
  • 00:32:34.260 --> 00:32:37.280
  • but he keeps every single one.
  • 00:32:37.290 --> 00:32:41.120
  • So it's time for you and I
  • 00:32:41.130 --> 00:32:42.240
  • to unpack all that God has given,
  • 00:32:42.250 --> 00:32:45.130
  • and Dr. Jeremiah is here today to encourage you
  • 00:32:45.140 --> 00:32:48.240
  • to harness the power of eight essentials
  • 00:32:48.250 --> 00:32:52.120
  • that will literally revolutionize your life.
  • 00:32:52.130 --> 00:32:55.140
  • So are you ready to get started?
  • 00:32:55.150 --> 00:32:58.040
  • Okay, please join me in welcoming to the stage
  • 00:32:58.050 --> 00:33:01.170
  • pastor, author, and beloved Bible teacher,
  • 00:33:01.180 --> 00:33:05.150
  • Dr. David Jeremiah.
  • 00:33:05.160 --> 00:33:07.240
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:33:07.250 --> 00:33:17.170
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:33:17.290 --> 00:33:20.250
  • Sheila: This new series is amazing.
  • 00:33:20.260 --> 00:33:22.230
  • "Everything You Need."
  • 00:33:22.240 --> 00:33:24.120
  • That's quite a promise.
  • 00:33:24.130 --> 00:33:26.110
  • Can you explain to us why you called this
  • 00:33:26.120 --> 00:33:28.010
  • particular teaching series, "Everything You Need"?
  • 00:33:28.020 --> 00:33:30.120
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, you know, I get most of my cues
  • 00:33:30.130 --> 00:33:32.100
  • from the Scripture and in 2 Peter chapter 1
  • 00:33:32.110 --> 00:33:35.020
  • it actually says right in the Scripture, it says:
  • 00:33:35.030 --> 00:33:38.080
  • "God has given us everything we need for life and godliness."
  • 00:33:38.090 --> 00:33:42.080
  • And I was reading that one day, aware of how many Christians
  • 00:33:42.090 --> 00:33:46.040
  • run around from place to place
  • 00:33:46.050 --> 00:33:47.290
  • trying to figure out how to get what they already have.
  • 00:33:48.000 --> 00:33:51.150
  • Sheila: Do you think we're struggling in the church
  • 00:33:51.160 --> 00:33:52.260
  • for lack of knowledge?
  • 00:33:52.270 --> 00:33:54.070
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, I think if there's one word
  • 00:33:54.080 --> 00:33:55.190
  • that describes where everybody is today,
  • 00:33:55.200 --> 00:33:57.120
  • I think it's the word "pressure."
  • 00:33:57.130 --> 00:33:58.250
  • Everybody seems like they're under a lot of pressure.
  • 00:33:58.260 --> 00:34:01.110
  • And I have to be honest with you, Sheila,
  • 00:34:01.120 --> 00:34:03.000
  • I got attracted to this particular passage
  • 00:34:03.010 --> 00:34:05.010
  • because I think it's singularly
  • 00:34:05.020 --> 00:34:06.230
  • one of the most perfect passages of Scripture in the Bible.
  • 00:34:06.240 --> 00:34:11.040
  • First of all, there's a promise at the beginning
  • 00:34:11.050 --> 00:34:13.140
  • and there's a blessing at the end
  • 00:34:13.150 --> 00:34:15.150
  • and in between are all the things you need to do
  • 00:34:15.160 --> 00:34:17.190
  • to get from the promise to the blessing.
  • 00:34:17.200 --> 00:34:19.190
  • And it's right in the text and it's--
  • 00:34:19.200 --> 00:34:21.260
  • it just grabbed me so much
  • 00:34:21.270 --> 00:34:23.230
  • I thought I gotta share that passage
  • 00:34:23.240 --> 00:34:25.120
  • because it's so powerful.
  • 00:34:25.130 --> 00:34:26.240
  • Sheila: Yeah, you're in for a great adventure.
  • 00:34:26.250 --> 00:34:28.160
  • One of the interesting things,
  • 00:34:28.170 --> 00:34:30.050
  • when Peter writes this letter and he talks about,
  • 00:34:30.060 --> 00:34:32.130
  • "To your faith add this and add that,"
  • 00:34:32.140 --> 00:34:34.240
  • you had an interesting revelation on the Greek meaning
  • 00:34:34.250 --> 00:34:37.230
  • behind the word "add."
  • 00:34:37.240 --> 00:34:39.140
  • Dr. Jeremiah: You know, the Bible is so special.
  • 00:34:39.150 --> 00:34:41.080
  • You never wanna discount any word.
  • 00:34:41.090 --> 00:34:43.050
  • There's one little word, it's only mentioned
  • 00:34:43.060 --> 00:34:45.080
  • in 2 Peter 1 one time but it's assumed six times.
  • 00:34:45.090 --> 00:34:49.180
  • And it's the little word, "add."
  • 00:34:49.190 --> 00:34:51.150
  • And the Scripture goes something like this:
  • 00:34:51.160 --> 00:34:53.150
  • "When you have the special promises of God
  • 00:34:53.160 --> 00:34:55.170
  • you're to add to your faith virtue,
  • 00:34:55.180 --> 00:34:59.170
  • and to your virtue knowledge, and to your knowledge,"
  • 00:34:59.180 --> 00:35:02.080
  • and then it goes through all the eight things.
  • 00:35:02.090 --> 00:35:04.000
  • But the word "add" only is in the text one time
  • 00:35:04.010 --> 00:35:07.060
  • but it's assumed in all of the others.
  • 00:35:07.070 --> 00:35:08.280
  • So when he says, "Add to your faith virtue,
  • 00:35:08.290 --> 00:35:11.170
  • and to your virtue knowledge,"
  • 00:35:11.180 --> 00:35:13.120
  • you assume he's saying "add to--"
  • 00:35:13.130 --> 00:35:14.250
  • so the word is assumed.
  • 00:35:14.260 --> 00:35:16.250
  • But the interesting thing about the word,
  • 00:35:16.260 --> 00:35:18.090
  • it's only three letters
  • 00:35:18.100 --> 00:35:19.240
  • and it is an incredibly powerful word.
  • 00:35:19.250 --> 00:35:22.150
  • It is a word that was used
  • 00:35:22.160 --> 00:35:24.180
  • in the days of the Greek theater.
  • 00:35:24.190 --> 00:35:26.280
  • When they would put on a major play,
  • 00:35:26.290 --> 00:35:29.110
  • they would get a sponsor.
  • 00:35:29.120 --> 00:35:31.060
  • He was called a choreogos and that's the word "add"
  • 00:35:31.070 --> 00:35:35.040
  • and it meant he would go out
  • 00:35:35.050 --> 00:35:36.140
  • and he would spend all this money
  • 00:35:36.150 --> 00:35:38.000
  • and get all these people together
  • 00:35:38.010 --> 00:35:39.200
  • to try to substantially make this play
  • 00:35:39.210 --> 00:35:42.230
  • better than anybody else could make it,
  • 00:35:42.240 --> 00:35:45.000
  • and that's what the word "add" means.
  • 00:35:45.010 --> 00:35:46.230
  • And so, when Peter says we're to add to our faith virtue,
  • 00:35:46.240 --> 00:35:50.010
  • he's not talking about just, you know, throwing in a thought.
  • 00:35:50.020 --> 00:35:52.270
  • He's saying, "lavishly, completely,
  • 00:35:52.280 --> 00:35:55.260
  • like you were choreographing a play,
  • 00:35:55.270 --> 00:35:58.030
  • add to your faith virtue."
  • 00:35:58.040 --> 00:35:59.170
  • In other words, do it seriously.
  • 00:35:59.180 --> 00:36:01.160
  • Don't just give it a second thought.
  • 00:36:01.170 --> 00:36:03.090
  • Do it as seriously as a man would go out
  • 00:36:03.100 --> 00:36:06.010
  • and try to raise money to underwrite a play.
  • 00:36:06.020 --> 00:36:09.120
  • Sheila: That's huge intentionality that would impact
  • 00:36:09.130 --> 00:36:11.200
  • how you live every single day.
  • 00:36:11.210 --> 00:36:13.020
  • Dr. Jeremiah: And you know what?
  • 00:36:13.030 --> 00:36:14.120
  • I had to ask myself have I ever done anything like that?
  • 00:36:14.130 --> 00:36:16.270
  • You know, we had our moments
  • 00:36:16.280 --> 00:36:18.080
  • when we worked harder at the Christian life
  • 00:36:18.090 --> 00:36:19.240
  • but have we ever thrown everything we have at it?
  • 00:36:19.250 --> 00:36:21.290
  • Have we ever said, "Here it is, men.
  • 00:36:22.000 --> 00:36:23.240
  • This is my number one priority.
  • 00:36:23.250 --> 00:36:25.090
  • No matter what, I'm gonna make this happen
  • 00:36:25.100 --> 00:36:27.020
  • by the grace of God."
  • 00:36:27.030 --> 00:36:28.140
  • That's what the word means.
  • 00:36:28.150 --> 00:36:30.030
  • Sheila: And you talk about this great adventure
  • 00:36:30.040 --> 00:36:31.230
  • that begins with promises and ends in blessing.
  • 00:36:31.240 --> 00:36:34.210
  • But I'm wondering what about people who think,
  • 00:36:34.220 --> 00:36:36.190
  • "You know what?
  • 00:36:36.200 --> 00:36:37.290
  • I wish I'd heard this message years ago.
  • 00:36:38.000 --> 00:36:39.120
  • I'm too far beyond the promises of God."
  • 00:36:39.130 --> 00:36:41.230
  • Dr. Jeremiah: You know, the wonderful thing
  • 00:36:41.240 --> 00:36:43.040
  • about all that, Sheila, is that God's promises are eternal.
  • 00:36:43.050 --> 00:36:45.130
  • They never run out.
  • 00:36:45.140 --> 00:36:46.280
  • God miraculously meets us wherever we are
  • 00:36:46.290 --> 00:36:49.170
  • with whatever situation and, you know,
  • 00:36:49.180 --> 00:36:51.060
  • it takes some of us longer to get the message.
  • 00:36:51.070 --> 00:36:53.050
  • Isn't that true?
  • 00:36:53.060 --> 00:36:54.180
  • We have to go through more stuff until we hear him speak,
  • 00:36:54.190 --> 00:36:56.280
  • and then ultimately, because of what's going on in our life,
  • 00:36:56.290 --> 00:37:00.240
  • I mean I can't get over how many times as a pastor
  • 00:37:00.250 --> 00:37:03.050
  • I've found that the things that happen to us in our lives
  • 00:37:03.060 --> 00:37:06.190
  • are God's way of getting our attention
  • 00:37:06.200 --> 00:37:09.090
  • so he can help us understand how much he loves us
  • 00:37:09.100 --> 00:37:11.170
  • and what he wants to do to help us.
  • 00:37:11.180 --> 00:37:13.140
  • Sheila: So let's look at the things that Peter said
  • 00:37:13.150 --> 00:37:15.230
  • that we should add to our faith.
  • 00:37:15.240 --> 00:37:17.110
  • I thought it was interesting that the first thing
  • 00:37:17.120 --> 00:37:18.280
  • he talks about is diligence.
  • 00:37:18.290 --> 00:37:22.050
  • Why do you think Peter made that the very first step
  • 00:37:22.060 --> 00:37:24.180
  • in what you call, I love this,
  • 00:37:24.190 --> 00:37:26.090
  • a stumble-proof life?
  • 00:37:26.100 --> 00:37:28.060
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, I think it's important because
  • 00:37:28.070 --> 00:37:29.290
  • it's the thing we usually don't bring to the process.
  • 00:37:30.000 --> 00:37:33.180
  • You know, we hear a message.
  • 00:37:33.190 --> 00:37:34.280
  • We think we should do it but we don't do it diligently.
  • 00:37:34.290 --> 00:37:37.130
  • And the word "diligently" is a very powerful word.
  • 00:37:37.140 --> 00:37:39.200
  • It kind of goes along with the word "add."
  • 00:37:39.210 --> 00:37:41.250
  • It means make this a serious effort on your part
  • 00:37:41.260 --> 00:37:45.230
  • and do it diligently.
  • 00:37:45.240 --> 00:37:48.030
  • Practice it, work on it, don't put it off, don't say,
  • 00:37:48.040 --> 00:37:51.050
  • "I'll get around to it."
  • 00:37:51.060 --> 00:37:52.150
  • Get at it.
  • 00:37:52.160 --> 00:37:53.250
  • Do it and make it your main objective.
  • 00:37:53.260 --> 00:37:55.210
  • Sheila: I'm wondering even for some
  • 00:37:55.220 --> 00:37:57.020
  • who are younger in the faith, they might think, you know,
  • 00:37:57.030 --> 00:37:58.270
  • "That sounds like a lot of hard work."
  • 00:37:58.280 --> 00:38:00.290
  • How do you stay focused on being diligent?
  • 00:38:01.000 --> 00:38:04.070
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, it is a lot of hard work.
  • 00:38:04.080 --> 00:38:07.040
  • Most everything that's worthwhile
  • 00:38:07.050 --> 00:38:08.170
  • is a lot of hard work.
  • 00:38:08.180 --> 00:38:09.270
  • Can I get a witness on that, right?
  • 00:38:09.280 --> 00:38:12.120
  • But it is worthwhile hard work and what I found is this,
  • 00:38:12.130 --> 00:38:16.180
  • as you diligently apply yourself to the Scriptures,
  • 00:38:16.190 --> 00:38:20.080
  • God will always give you enough encouragement
  • 00:38:20.090 --> 00:38:22.110
  • in the process to keep you going.
  • 00:38:22.120 --> 00:38:24.120
  • But if you don't diligently apply yourself,
  • 00:38:24.130 --> 00:38:26.140
  • you've got nowhere to go.
  • 00:38:26.150 --> 00:38:27.240
  • You're just sort of hanging in nowhere space.
  • 00:38:27.250 --> 00:38:30.040
  • He wants us more than anything else to get serious
  • 00:38:30.050 --> 00:38:32.200
  • about what we say we believe.
  • 00:38:32.210 --> 00:38:34.190
  • Sheila: Stay tuned.
  • 00:38:35.170 --> 00:38:36.260
  • We'll be right back to continue discussing
  • 00:38:36.270 --> 00:38:38.060
  • "Everything You Need,"
  • 00:38:38.070 --> 00:38:39.160
  • the new teaching series by Dr. David Jeremiah.
  • 00:38:39.170 --> 00:38:42.170
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:38:43.040 --> 00:38:48.160
  • announcer: In Dr. Jeremiah's new book,
  • 00:38:50.090 --> 00:38:51.220
  • "Everything You Need,"
  • 00:38:51.230 --> 00:38:53.020
  • he invites you to consider how would your life change
  • 00:38:53.030 --> 00:38:55.280
  • if you had the energy to diligently fulfill
  • 00:38:55.290 --> 00:38:58.070
  • God's purpose for you,
  • 00:38:58.080 --> 00:39:00.080
  • or the confidence to always do what pleases God,
  • 00:39:00.090 --> 00:39:03.070
  • or had an intimate knowledge of his Word?
  • 00:39:03.080 --> 00:39:05.270
  • What would your faith be like if you replaced a harmful habit
  • 00:39:05.280 --> 00:39:08.160
  • with a positive one, or developed a determination
  • 00:39:08.170 --> 00:39:11.060
  • that could carry you through any difficulty?
  • 00:39:11.070 --> 00:39:13.260
  • Do you want to see yourself becoming more like Christ,
  • 00:39:13.270 --> 00:39:16.270
  • sharing his kindness and love to those around you?
  • 00:39:16.280 --> 00:39:19.240
  • It may surprise you to know that God has already given you
  • 00:39:19.250 --> 00:39:22.070
  • everything you need to do all this and more.
  • 00:39:22.080 --> 00:39:25.080
  • In "Everything You Need,"

  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:39:57.130 --> 00:40:01.200
  • Sheila: Thank you for joining us.
  • 00:40:02.050 --> 00:40:03.170
  • I'm Sheila Walsh, here again to talk with Dr. David Jeremiah
  • 00:40:03.180 --> 00:40:06.120
  • about his new series, "Everything You Need."
  • 00:40:06.130 --> 00:40:09.230
  • Sheila: The next thing that Peter talks about
  • 00:40:10.260 --> 00:40:12.230
  • adding to our faith is virtue.
  • 00:40:12.240 --> 00:40:14.240
  • That's not a word we use a lot in our culture anymore.
  • 00:40:14.250 --> 00:40:17.040
  • What exactly is virtue?
  • 00:40:17.050 --> 00:40:18.160
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, let me explain why we don't use it
  • 00:40:18.170 --> 00:40:19.260
  • very much 'cause there isn't very much of it in our culture.
  • 00:40:19.270 --> 00:40:22.060
  • Sheila: That's for sure.
  • 00:40:22.070 --> 00:40:23.290
  • Dr. Jeremiah: You know, virtue, the best definition of virtue
  • 00:40:24.000 --> 00:40:26.250
  • is moral excellence, doing the right thing.
  • 00:40:26.260 --> 00:40:30.140
  • There is a right and there is a wrong
  • 00:40:30.150 --> 00:40:32.090
  • and the Bible helps us understand.
  • 00:40:32.100 --> 00:40:34.090
  • You know, one of the best illustrations of it
  • 00:40:34.100 --> 00:40:36.010
  • and I talk about this in that chapter
  • 00:40:36.020 --> 00:40:37.240
  • is that when Jesus Christ was on this earth
  • 00:40:37.250 --> 00:40:40.290
  • he was the model of virtue
  • 00:40:41.000 --> 00:40:42.200
  • and the way we can see virtue in his life
  • 00:40:42.210 --> 00:40:45.140
  • more than anything else is the Bible says:
  • 00:40:45.150 --> 00:40:47.130
  • "He always did those things that pleased his Father."
  • 00:40:47.140 --> 00:40:51.090
  • That was how he lived his life.
  • 00:40:51.100 --> 00:40:52.280
  • And you know, if you wanna be a virtuous person,
  • 00:40:52.290 --> 00:40:55.030
  • you can get real technical about it.
  • 00:40:55.040 --> 00:40:56.250
  • You can make all kinds of lists but let me just give you the--
  • 00:40:56.260 --> 00:41:00.050
  • what I think is the secret.
  • 00:41:00.060 --> 00:41:02.000
  • Learn how to live your life to please the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 00:41:02.010 --> 00:41:06.060
  • Do what pleases him and, you know what?
  • 00:41:06.070 --> 00:41:10.110
  • You don't have to wonder what those things are
  • 00:41:10.120 --> 00:41:14.060
  • 'cause he tells you pretty much in his Scripture
  • 00:41:14.070 --> 00:41:16.040
  • by his life, by his testimony.
  • 00:41:16.050 --> 00:41:18.210
  • As Jesus Christ pleased his Father,
  • 00:41:18.220 --> 00:41:21.160
  • our goal is to please our Christ.
  • 00:41:21.170 --> 00:41:25.010
  • So we're in that same little construct
  • 00:41:25.020 --> 00:41:27.000
  • where if we study the life of Jesus
  • 00:41:27.010 --> 00:41:29.060
  • and we watch how he functioned with his Father,
  • 00:41:29.070 --> 00:41:32.210
  • we learn how to function with him.
  • 00:41:32.220 --> 00:41:35.180
  • Sheila: Peter says to that diligence and virtue,
  • 00:41:35.190 --> 00:41:38.090
  • then we add knowledge.
  • 00:41:38.100 --> 00:41:39.280
  • I think this is an interesting one
  • 00:41:39.290 --> 00:41:41.100
  • because we live in a time where people think technically
  • 00:41:41.110 --> 00:41:43.260
  • we have access to more knowledge
  • 00:41:43.270 --> 00:41:45.220
  • than we ever had.
  • 00:41:45.230 --> 00:41:47.070
  • But what kind of knowledge is Peter actually talking about?
  • 00:41:47.080 --> 00:41:49.230
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, let me just put a point in here
  • 00:41:49.240 --> 00:41:51.080
  • for the importance of knowledge
  • 00:41:51.090 --> 00:41:52.200
  • because there are a lot of people today
  • 00:41:52.210 --> 00:41:54.020
  • who teach that if you really wanna know Jesus Christ
  • 00:41:54.030 --> 00:41:56.170
  • you have to shut your brain off and just let your emotions rule.
  • 00:41:56.180 --> 00:41:59.290
  • That's a bunch of craziness
  • 00:42:00.020 --> 00:42:01.150
  • and I hope that you haven't heard that
  • 00:42:01.160 --> 00:42:02.270
  • and gotten caught up in it
  • 00:42:02.280 --> 00:42:04.070
  • because we can't do anything with what we don't know.
  • 00:42:04.080 --> 00:42:07.130
  • It's important to know some things.
  • 00:42:07.140 --> 00:42:09.090
  • In the Bible we're taught, first of all,
  • 00:42:09.100 --> 00:42:11.230
  • to study the Scripture
  • 00:42:11.240 --> 00:42:13.060
  • and know what the Scripture says.
  • 00:42:13.070 --> 00:42:14.280
  • There's some homework involved in that.
  • 00:42:14.290 --> 00:42:16.280
  • It's blessed homework but it's still homework.
  • 00:42:16.290 --> 00:42:19.100
  • You know, the Bible is open to those
  • 00:42:19.110 --> 00:42:21.190
  • who will take it seriously
  • 00:42:21.200 --> 00:42:23.110
  • and then once you study the Scripture
  • 00:42:23.120 --> 00:42:25.230
  • you realize that in studying the Scripture
  • 00:42:25.240 --> 00:42:28.020
  • you're learning about Christ.
  • 00:42:28.030 --> 00:42:29.210
  • Somebody once told me we can almost tell
  • 00:42:29.220 --> 00:42:31.180
  • what our relationship with Christ really is
  • 00:42:31.190 --> 00:42:33.290
  • when we examine what our relationship
  • 00:42:34.000 --> 00:42:35.200
  • with the Scripture is.
  • 00:42:35.210 --> 00:42:37.170
  • In other words, we can say, "I love the Lord,"
  • 00:42:37.180 --> 00:42:39.250
  • but if you don't ever read his love letters to you,
  • 00:42:39.260 --> 00:42:41.200
  • how does that work?
  • 00:42:41.210 --> 00:42:43.040
  • So you study the Scripture, you read the Word of God,
  • 00:42:43.050 --> 00:42:46.130
  • you learn what the Word of God says,
  • 00:42:46.140 --> 00:42:48.120
  • and the more you study, the more you know,
  • 00:42:48.130 --> 00:42:50.210
  • the more you know, the more you realize you don't know.
  • 00:42:50.220 --> 00:42:53.000
  • That's one thing for sure. And the more you want to know.
  • 00:42:53.010 --> 00:42:56.130
  • Sheila: How do you stay motivated to still get excited
  • 00:42:56.140 --> 00:42:59.060
  • to dive in one more time?
  • 00:42:59.070 --> 00:43:01.040
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, the Bible says that
  • 00:43:01.050 --> 00:43:02.140
  • "God's mercies are new every morning."
  • 00:43:02.150 --> 00:43:04.160
  • Isn't that true?
  • 00:43:04.170 --> 00:43:06.010
  • One of the blessings for me at this stage of my life
  • 00:43:06.020 --> 00:43:08.170
  • is I've taught most of the Scripture
  • 00:43:08.180 --> 00:43:10.150
  • and now when I'm studying a portion of Scripture,
  • 00:43:10.160 --> 00:43:13.070
  • God brings to my mind the things that I've studied about,
  • 00:43:13.080 --> 00:43:15.170
  • other portions that have to do with this.
  • 00:43:15.180 --> 00:43:18.120
  • And it's just kind of that wonderful mystery
  • 00:43:18.130 --> 00:43:21.000
  • that goes on in the Scripture.
  • 00:43:21.010 --> 00:43:23.140
  • Sheila: The next thing that Peter says
  • 00:43:23.150 --> 00:43:24.280
  • we should add to our faith is self-control.
  • 00:43:24.290 --> 00:43:28.020
  • One of the things I found encouraging
  • 00:43:28.030 --> 00:43:29.210
  • in your teaching in this series is you say
  • 00:43:29.220 --> 00:43:31.080
  • it's really more spirit-control than self-control.
  • 00:43:31.090 --> 00:43:34.160
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Yeah, a lot of times,
  • 00:43:34.170 --> 00:43:35.260
  • we blame our body for the things that go on
  • 00:43:35.270 --> 00:43:38.180
  • and we should, probably.
  • 00:43:38.190 --> 00:43:40.120
  • But most of the problems we have with sin
  • 00:43:40.130 --> 00:43:42.030
  • don't start in our body.
  • 00:43:42.040 --> 00:43:43.130
  • They start in our mind.
  • 00:43:43.140 --> 00:43:45.010
  • What we open up our minds to is what allows us
  • 00:43:45.020 --> 00:43:47.160
  • to go down the road that gets us in trouble.
  • 00:43:47.170 --> 00:43:50.060
  • Let me just say more than ever before
  • 00:43:50.070 --> 00:43:52.070
  • because of the Internet
  • 00:43:52.080 --> 00:43:53.180
  • and because of what used to be entertainment,
  • 00:43:53.190 --> 00:43:55.240
  • I told our people that we just did something in our house
  • 00:43:55.250 --> 00:43:58.160
  • and got a new system that's got, like,
  • 00:43:58.170 --> 00:44:00.180
  • 100 and 150 channels or whatever.
  • 00:44:00.190 --> 00:44:03.200
  • And one night I just sat down
  • 00:44:03.210 --> 00:44:05.090
  • and I clicked through all those channels
  • 00:44:05.100 --> 00:44:06.190
  • and I couldn't find one single thing
  • 00:44:06.200 --> 00:44:08.120
  • that I thought was worth watching.
  • 00:44:08.130 --> 00:44:10.050
  • Out of 150 channels.
  • 00:44:10.060 --> 00:44:12.190
  • Does that say anything about our culture?
  • 00:44:12.200 --> 00:44:14.280
  • I mean, thank God for sports.
  • 00:44:14.290 --> 00:44:17.030
  • Sheila: Amen.
  • 00:44:18.090 --> 00:44:19.180
  • [laughing]
  • 00:44:19.190 --> 00:44:22.140
  • The next thing that Peter addresses is perseverance.
  • 00:44:23.070 --> 00:44:27.030
  • What does it really mean to persevere?
  • 00:44:27.040 --> 00:44:30.010
  • Dr. Jeremiah: The best way to say that
  • 00:44:30.020 --> 00:44:31.110
  • is perseverance is continuing when you don't want to.
  • 00:44:31.120 --> 00:44:35.280
  • Here's what I've learned. Somebody told me this.
  • 00:44:35.290 --> 00:44:37.290
  • When we think we can't do anymore,
  • 00:44:38.000 --> 00:44:40.110
  • there's still 60% more that we can do.
  • 00:44:40.120 --> 00:44:44.240
  • We have our own little personal limitations
  • 00:44:44.250 --> 00:44:47.120
  • that are comfortable to us.
  • 00:44:47.130 --> 00:44:49.100
  • Perseverance is going beyond where you think you can go.
  • 00:44:49.110 --> 00:44:52.240
  • All of us here, if we're Christians,
  • 00:44:52.250 --> 00:44:55.060
  • we're Christians because somebody persevered.
  • 00:44:55.070 --> 00:44:58.110
  • Somebody preached the gospel when it wasn't easy.
  • 00:44:58.120 --> 00:45:01.050
  • Somebody came to your home
  • 00:45:01.060 --> 00:45:02.170
  • when they'd rather been home watching TV.
  • 00:45:02.180 --> 00:45:04.130
  • Somebody prayed for you.
  • 00:45:04.140 --> 00:45:06.120
  • Perseverance is one of the building blocks
  • 00:45:06.130 --> 00:45:08.160
  • of who we are in Christ.
  • 00:45:08.170 --> 00:45:10.070
  • Aren't you glad that Jesus Christ persevered
  • 00:45:10.080 --> 00:45:12.210
  • all the way to the cross, amen?
  • 00:45:12.220 --> 00:45:15.050
  • Sheila: Amen. I love how you describe it.
  • 00:45:15.060 --> 00:45:18.030
  • In this teaching you actually call it
  • 00:45:18.040 --> 00:45:20.030
  • "relentless determination."
  • 00:45:20.040 --> 00:45:22.090
  • Dr. Jeremiah: That's what it is.
  • 00:45:22.100 --> 00:45:23.220
  • When you're involved in serving the Lord,
  • 00:45:23.230 --> 00:45:27.030
  • the enemy comes along and he whispers in your heart,
  • 00:45:27.040 --> 00:45:29.140
  • "That's enough.
  • 00:45:29.150 --> 00:45:30.240
  • You don't need to do that anymore.
  • 00:45:30.250 --> 00:45:32.040
  • You're finished."
  • 00:45:32.050 --> 00:45:33.140
  • But you don't do that.
  • 00:45:33.150 --> 00:45:34.240
  • Relentlessly, you pursue, you go forward.
  • 00:45:34.250 --> 00:45:37.070
  • You know, the Bible teaches us
  • 00:45:37.080 --> 00:45:38.170
  • to live our lives in day-tight compartments.
  • 00:45:38.180 --> 00:45:40.110
  • The Bible says: "Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof."
  • 00:45:40.230 --> 00:45:44.010
  • And in the New Testament, says: "Don't worry about tomorrow,
  • 00:45:44.020 --> 00:45:47.230
  • for tomorrow will worry about itself."
  • 00:45:47.240 --> 00:45:50.100
  • You know, if we have something that's hard for us to do
  • 00:45:50.110 --> 00:45:54.040
  • and you get caught up in the immensity of it,
  • 00:45:54.050 --> 00:45:56.190
  • you will never be able to achieve it.
  • 00:45:56.200 --> 00:45:59.030
  • But you can achieve what comes tomorrow.
  • 00:45:59.040 --> 00:46:01.230
  • And God never gives us more.
  • 00:46:01.240 --> 00:46:03.180
  • You know, he's-- isn't it interesting?
  • 00:46:03.190 --> 00:46:05.080
  • God created the world like this.
  • 00:46:05.090 --> 00:46:07.010
  • He gives us days and hours and weeks and years.
  • 00:46:07.020 --> 00:46:11.030
  • He could have created this just like an endless eternity
  • 00:46:11.040 --> 00:46:15.140
  • even on this earth.
  • 00:46:15.150 --> 00:46:17.100
  • But I think those places are good for us.
  • 00:46:17.110 --> 00:46:20.190
  • It's good that we have a week we can look back on.
  • 00:46:20.200 --> 00:46:23.150
  • It's good that we have a day that we can say,
  • 00:46:23.160 --> 00:46:25.250
  • "I don't know how I'm gonna get there,
  • 00:46:25.260 --> 00:46:27.060
  • but I can get here."
  • 00:46:27.070 --> 00:46:28.270
  • And I'd just encourage people,
  • 00:46:28.280 --> 00:46:30.160
  • try not to get so caught up in the past that you get depressed.
  • 00:46:30.170 --> 00:46:33.230
  • And don't worry about the future 'cause you're not there yet.
  • 00:46:33.240 --> 00:46:36.240
  • Live today and ask God to give you the grace for today
  • 00:46:36.250 --> 00:46:39.250
  • and when you do that, he will do that.
  • 00:46:39.260 --> 00:46:41.120
  • Sheila: Yeah, that's beautiful.
  • 00:46:41.130 --> 00:46:43.080
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:46:43.090 --> 00:46:46.150
  • Sheila: The next thing that Peter encourages us
  • 00:46:46.160 --> 00:46:48.200
  • to add to our faith is godliness.
  • 00:46:48.210 --> 00:46:50.290
  • And godliness is one of those words
  • 00:46:51.000 --> 00:46:52.110
  • that just seems like it's kinda unattainable.
  • 00:46:52.120 --> 00:46:54.200
  • It's very lofty--
  • 00:46:54.210 --> 00:46:56.050
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, you know what, Sheila,
  • 00:46:56.060 --> 00:46:57.150
  • can I just be honest with you?
  • 00:46:57.160 --> 00:46:58.250
  • When I saw that list, I was pretty excited
  • 00:46:58.260 --> 00:47:00.240
  • about everything that was on that list.
  • 00:47:00.250 --> 00:47:02.170
  • When I saw "godliness," I got, "Oh, no,"
  • 00:47:02.180 --> 00:47:06.130
  • because, you know, that's an intimidating word, isn't it?
  • 00:47:06.140 --> 00:47:08.280
  • Sheila: It is.
  • 00:47:08.290 --> 00:47:10.080
  • Dr. Jeremiah: And it's been used in the wrong way
  • 00:47:10.090 --> 00:47:11.200
  • by a lot of people
  • 00:47:11.210 --> 00:47:13.000
  • and sometimes it can make you feel like,
  • 00:47:13.010 --> 00:47:14.170
  • "Well, I'm not even in this race.
  • 00:47:14.180 --> 00:47:16.040
  • Why am I even-- I don't even--
  • 00:47:16.050 --> 00:47:17.220
  • I don't even belong in a conversation about that."
  • 00:47:17.230 --> 00:47:20.080
  • But let's face it.
  • 00:47:20.090 --> 00:47:21.230
  • When you break that word down, it's simply this.
  • 00:47:21.240 --> 00:47:24.250
  • To be godly is to try to be like God.
  • 00:47:24.260 --> 00:47:28.030
  • That's all it means. To do what God would do.
  • 00:47:28.040 --> 00:47:30.150
  • And it's not like we don't have an illustration
  • 00:47:30.160 --> 00:47:33.040
  • because God in heaven, nobody has seen,
  • 00:47:33.050 --> 00:47:36.140
  • you can't see him and live.
  • 00:47:36.150 --> 00:47:38.110
  • So he sent his Son down here who was God in the flesh
  • 00:47:38.120 --> 00:47:42.180
  • and allowed us to witness his life for 30-some years
  • 00:47:42.190 --> 00:47:46.210
  • and see what it looks like to live godly.
  • 00:47:46.220 --> 00:47:50.020
  • And it's not all the high stuff that we put.
  • 00:47:50.030 --> 00:47:53.180
  • You know what it was?
  • 00:47:53.190 --> 00:47:54.280
  • It was helping a woman who was caught in adultery.
  • 00:47:54.290 --> 00:47:58.140
  • It was helping a father who lost his child.
  • 00:47:58.150 --> 00:48:02.020
  • It was reaching out to people with love and kindness.
  • 00:48:02.030 --> 00:48:05.040
  • When you see the life of Jesus on this earth and what he did,
  • 00:48:05.050 --> 00:48:08.120
  • it's not all this doctrinal stuff we think about.
  • 00:48:08.130 --> 00:48:11.090
  • It's the love and ministry we have with other people.
  • 00:48:11.100 --> 00:48:13.270
  • That's what it means to be godly.
  • 00:48:13.280 --> 00:48:15.290
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:48:16.000 --> 00:48:19.180
  • Sheila: I can't think of a time in our culture
  • 00:48:19.190 --> 00:48:21.140
  • or in the church when we've needed this more.
  • 00:48:21.150 --> 00:48:23.220
  • He talks about brotherly kindness.
  • 00:48:23.230 --> 00:48:26.270
  • Why do you think Peter included that in this list?
  • 00:48:26.280 --> 00:48:30.220
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, because he lived in a time
  • 00:48:30.230 --> 00:48:32.150
  • similar to us.
  • 00:48:32.160 --> 00:48:34.180
  • He lived in a time when people went about
  • 00:48:34.190 --> 00:48:38.180
  • talking about love and not examining
  • 00:48:38.190 --> 00:48:41.130
  • their own lives to see if it was true.
  • 00:48:41.140 --> 00:48:43.230
  • And many of these chapters, you guys,
  • 00:48:43.240 --> 00:48:45.100
  • when we wrote this book,
  • 00:48:45.110 --> 00:48:47.080
  • I would take the quality that's on the list
  • 00:48:47.090 --> 00:48:49.170
  • and then I'd try to find the central passage
  • 00:48:49.180 --> 00:48:51.220
  • in the New Testament that taught that,
  • 00:48:51.230 --> 00:48:53.180
  • and the central passage for that one is in Ephesians chapter 4.
  • 00:48:53.190 --> 00:48:57.250
  • Well, you know this passage. If I say it, you'll remember it.
  • 00:48:57.260 --> 00:49:00.140
  • "Be kind one to another, tenderhearted,
  • 00:49:00.150 --> 00:49:03.000
  • forgiving one another,
  • 00:49:03.010 --> 00:49:04.130
  • even as God for Christ's sake has forgiven you."
  • 00:49:04.140 --> 00:49:07.040
  • Isn't it a wonderful passage?
  • 00:49:07.050 --> 00:49:08.220
  • That's what brotherly kindness is.
  • 00:49:08.230 --> 00:49:10.190
  • And if you unlock that passage, there's, like,
  • 00:49:10.200 --> 00:49:12.230
  • four or five points in there that teach you what it means
  • 00:49:12.240 --> 00:49:15.290
  • to be kind and loving to one another,
  • 00:49:16.000 --> 00:49:19.130
  • including a whole little section on not being angry.
  • 00:49:19.140 --> 00:49:23.120
  • And if you go back to Ephesians 4,
  • 00:49:23.130 --> 00:49:25.280
  • it's about verse 25 or so, and read that section,
  • 00:49:25.290 --> 00:49:29.040
  • you will have Paul's sermon on brotherly kindness
  • 00:49:29.050 --> 00:49:34.040
  • and what it looks like and it's all real simple.
  • 00:49:34.050 --> 00:49:37.090
  • I mean, it's not rocket science.
  • 00:49:37.100 --> 00:49:39.060
  • It's just the everyday things that we do
  • 00:49:39.070 --> 00:49:41.290
  • that make a difference in who we are.
  • 00:49:42.000 --> 00:49:43.270
  • Sheila: Well, we've come to the conclusion of Peter's list
  • 00:49:43.280 --> 00:49:46.050
  • and we're told to add love to our faith.
  • 00:49:46.060 --> 00:49:48.220
  • And you point out the New Living Translation
  • 00:49:48.230 --> 00:49:50.190
  • describes it as love for everyone.
  • 00:49:50.200 --> 00:49:53.230
  • How do we do that when there's, I mean,
  • 00:49:53.240 --> 00:49:56.250
  • I know there'll be many people out there
  • 00:49:56.260 --> 00:49:58.070
  • who have been seriously hurt by someone.
  • 00:49:58.080 --> 00:50:00.010
  • How do you love when you've been wounded?
  • 00:50:00.020 --> 00:50:02.290
  • Dr. Jeremiah: It's not natural. Sheila: No.
  • 00:50:03.000 --> 00:50:04.160
  • Dr. Jeremiah: No, but it's supernatural.
  • 00:50:04.170 --> 00:50:07.070
  • You can only love that person through the love of Christ.
  • 00:50:07.080 --> 00:50:10.080
  • And I think the key to us all, for all of us,
  • 00:50:10.090 --> 00:50:12.140
  • is to realize how unlovely we were
  • 00:50:12.150 --> 00:50:16.220
  • when Christ died for us.
  • 00:50:16.230 --> 00:50:18.130
  • The Bible even says it, you know?
  • 00:50:18.140 --> 00:50:20.170
  • The Bible says it in so many different ways.
  • 00:50:20.180 --> 00:50:22.100
  • He died for us when there really
  • 00:50:22.110 --> 00:50:23.220
  • was no reason for him to do that.
  • 00:50:23.230 --> 00:50:25.260
  • And here's what I've been learning in my life, Sheila.
  • 00:50:25.270 --> 00:50:28.210
  • We love others out of the reservoir of God's love for us.
  • 00:50:28.220 --> 00:50:33.240
  • Sheila: That's so true.
  • 00:50:33.250 --> 00:50:36.170
  • Our culture, particularly at the moment
  • 00:50:36.180 --> 00:50:39.170
  • in the days we're living in, seems very polarized,
  • 00:50:39.180 --> 00:50:41.280
  • you know, that we're all one side or another.
  • 00:50:41.290 --> 00:50:44.170
  • How do we practice that love in that atmosphere?
  • 00:50:44.180 --> 00:50:48.110
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, you know, I'm not really sure where to go
  • 00:50:48.120 --> 00:50:51.060
  • with what I know you're talking about.
  • 00:50:51.070 --> 00:50:53.110
  • Today, in our culture, it's not even a matter of love anymore.
  • 00:50:53.120 --> 00:50:56.270
  • It's just--it's a matter of civility, you know?
  • 00:50:56.280 --> 00:50:59.270
  • Love's way down the line.
  • 00:50:59.280 --> 00:51:01.230
  • If we could just even be kind of nice to one another,
  • 00:51:01.240 --> 00:51:03.290
  • that would be good.
  • 00:51:04.000 --> 00:51:05.160
  • Paul wrote to the Romans and he said,
  • 00:51:05.170 --> 00:51:07.050
  • "Don't let the world pour you into its mold."
  • 00:51:07.060 --> 00:51:09.280
  • Don't let the things that are happening in the world
  • 00:51:09.290 --> 00:51:12.140
  • make you different than you know you should be.
  • 00:51:12.150 --> 00:51:15.000
  • You can still be friends with those
  • 00:51:15.010 --> 00:51:16.220
  • who don't agree with you
  • 00:51:16.230 --> 00:51:18.200
  • and we as Christians ought to be the ones
  • 00:51:18.210 --> 00:51:20.250
  • showing the way to do that.
  • 00:51:20.260 --> 00:51:22.140
  • Sheila: Yeah, so when we add these eight characteristics
  • 00:51:22.150 --> 00:51:25.030
  • to our faith,
  • 00:51:25.040 --> 00:51:26.150
  • what are the blessings that we can expect from God?
  • 00:51:26.160 --> 00:51:28.180
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, I can't go through all of those.
  • 00:51:28.190 --> 00:51:29.280
  • We don't have time.
  • 00:51:29.290 --> 00:51:31.090
  • But let me just tell you, there's seven of 'em.
  • 00:51:31.100 --> 00:51:32.190
  • Five of them you get now,
  • 00:51:32.200 --> 00:51:34.050
  • two of 'em you've got to wait for.
  • 00:51:34.060 --> 00:51:37.030
  • And I love this last chapter in this book
  • 00:51:37.040 --> 00:51:38.280
  • because it tells us six times in five verses,
  • 00:51:38.290 --> 00:51:42.170
  • it talks about these things.
  • 00:51:42.180 --> 00:51:44.100
  • That little phrase, "these things."
  • 00:51:44.110 --> 00:51:46.030
  • If you do these things and here's one of the statements.
  • 00:51:46.040 --> 00:51:48.220
  • Let me just talk about this one.
  • 00:51:48.230 --> 00:51:51.070
  • This is one of the reasons that I wrote this book
  • 00:51:51.080 --> 00:51:53.230
  • and this is what grabbed me.
  • 00:51:53.240 --> 00:51:55.070
  • And listen, this is right from the Bible.
  • 00:51:55.080 --> 00:51:57.000
  • I'm not making this up.
  • 00:51:57.010 --> 00:51:59.020
  • Peter said, after talking about all these things, he said this:
  • 00:51:59.030 --> 00:52:02.040
  • "If you do these things, you will never stumble."
  • 00:52:02.050 --> 00:52:09.220
  • I thought, "Can that be true?" But then I thought back on 'em.
  • 00:52:09.230 --> 00:52:13.140
  • If you lavishly devote yourself diligently
  • 00:52:13.150 --> 00:52:16.240
  • to the growth of your life in the areas
  • 00:52:16.250 --> 00:52:19.140
  • that he describes in that chapter,
  • 00:52:19.150 --> 00:52:21.100
  • here's what he says.
  • 00:52:21.110 --> 00:52:22.200
  • If you do these things, you will never stumble.
  • 00:52:22.210 --> 00:52:24.260
  • And then he said at the end of 'em, the last one he said,
  • 00:52:24.270 --> 00:52:28.010
  • "You will go into eternity abundantly."
  • 00:52:28.020 --> 00:52:31.070
  • In other words, it doesn't say,
  • 00:52:31.080 --> 00:52:32.280
  • "If you do these things, you'll go to eternity,"
  • 00:52:32.290 --> 00:52:34.190
  • 'cause you can't work your way to heaven.
  • 00:52:34.200 --> 00:52:36.170
  • It's not about going to heaven; it's about how you go to heaven.
  • 00:52:36.180 --> 00:52:39.120
  • And he says, "If you wanna go to heaven,
  • 00:52:39.130 --> 00:52:41.130
  • kind of slipping in the back door,
  • 00:52:41.140 --> 00:52:42.250
  • you can do that.
  • 00:52:42.260 --> 00:52:44.070
  • Or if you wanna go to heaven with your hands up high,
  • 00:52:44.080 --> 00:52:46.150
  • rejoicing that you've had the privilege of honoring the Lord
  • 00:52:46.160 --> 00:52:49.130
  • and living for him during your lifetime,
  • 00:52:49.140 --> 00:52:51.130
  • you can do that."
  • 00:52:51.140 --> 00:52:52.230
  • He says, "If you do these things,
  • 00:52:52.240 --> 00:52:54.070
  • you will have an abundant entrance
  • 00:52:54.080 --> 00:52:56.210
  • into heaven," hallelujah.
  • 00:52:56.220 --> 00:52:58.130
  • Sheila: This is amazing. What a promise, wow.
  • 00:52:58.140 --> 00:53:03.110
  • That chapter has impacted me so much.
  • 00:53:03.120 --> 00:53:07.000
  • I mean, this is Peter who sat at the Lord's feet,
  • 00:53:07.010 --> 00:53:09.210
  • saying to us, "Here's this promise.
  • 00:53:09.220 --> 00:53:11.190
  • You do this and this will happen."
  • 00:53:11.200 --> 00:53:14.080
  • Dr. Jeremiah: And he didn't exactly live a perfect life.
  • 00:53:14.090 --> 00:53:15.280
  • Sheila: No.
  • 00:53:15.290 --> 00:53:17.080
  • Dr. Jeremiah: I mean, he had his moments.
  • 00:53:17.090 --> 00:53:18.180
  • He had his trouble.
  • 00:53:18.190 --> 00:53:19.280
  • Until he figured it out and got it right,
  • 00:53:19.290 --> 00:53:21.160
  • and then was honored to be crucified upside down
  • 00:53:21.170 --> 00:53:24.250
  • instead of being crucified right-side up
  • 00:53:24.260 --> 00:53:27.050
  • 'cause he felt he wasn't worthy of the Lord he loved.
  • 00:53:27.060 --> 00:53:30.230
  • Sheila: As we bring this to a conclusion, let me ask you,
  • 00:53:30.240 --> 00:53:33.030
  • how has studying this passage impacted your own life?
  • 00:53:33.040 --> 00:53:36.150
  • Dr. Jeremiah: You know, it's very emotional to me.
  • 00:53:36.160 --> 00:53:39.110
  • It's just another reminder, you know,
  • 00:53:39.120 --> 00:53:41.220
  • of the sufficiency of the Word of God.
  • 00:53:41.230 --> 00:53:44.060
  • As I mentioned at the beginning,
  • 00:53:44.070 --> 00:53:45.200
  • we have so many Christians running hither and yon
  • 00:53:45.210 --> 00:53:48.080
  • trying to find out what's wrong or what's missing or,
  • 00:53:48.090 --> 00:53:51.200
  • "Who can I talk to?
  • 00:53:51.210 --> 00:53:53.050
  • What great preacher can I listen to?
  • 00:53:53.060 --> 00:53:54.250
  • What sermon can I watch on TV? Send me that CD.
  • 00:53:54.260 --> 00:53:57.230
  • I gotta have this worship experience."
  • 00:53:57.240 --> 00:54:00.030
  • And then you read this simple letter
  • 00:54:00.040 --> 00:54:02.160
  • and it says God has given you
  • 00:54:02.170 --> 00:54:05.140
  • everything you need for life in godliness.
  • 00:54:05.150 --> 00:54:08.280
  • Now, the fact that he's given it to us as a gift,
  • 00:54:08.290 --> 00:54:11.280
  • you know, Paul wrote to the Philippians and he said,
  • 00:54:11.290 --> 00:54:13.290
  • "Work out your own salvation in fear and trembling;
  • 00:54:14.000 --> 00:54:16.270
  • for it is God who works in you
  • 00:54:16.280 --> 00:54:19.090
  • both to will and to do of his good pleasure."
  • 00:54:19.100 --> 00:54:21.110
  • In other words, God has worked it in.
  • 00:54:21.120 --> 00:54:24.030
  • Now you work it out.
  • 00:54:24.040 --> 00:54:25.220
  • God's given you this gift, and go do it.
  • 00:54:25.230 --> 00:54:28.130
  • Sheila: Please will you help me thank Dr. David Jeremiah.
  • 00:54:30.040 --> 00:54:33.080
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:54:33.090 --> 00:54:39.200
  • announcer: Today, Dr. Jeremiah gave us practical steps
