  • 00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:11.000
  • Dr. Michael Youssef: Blessed Thanksgiving, may all your days
  • 00:00:22.190 --> 00:00:26.290
  • be filled with thanksgiving and thanks living.
  • 00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:30.200
  • You know, I am honored and privileged this morning
  • 00:00:30.210 --> 00:00:34.110
  • to introduce to you my son, Jonathan Youssef.
  • 00:00:34.120 --> 00:00:38.030
  • You've heard him before. He loves the Lord.
  • 00:00:38.040 --> 00:00:40.250
  • He's a great preacher of the Word of God,
  • 00:00:40.260 --> 00:00:42.140
  • and you're gonna hear a message
  • 00:00:42.150 --> 00:00:44.010
  • that is going to challenge you about
  • 00:00:44.020 --> 00:00:46.130
  • the conflicts of Kingdom.
  • 00:00:46.140 --> 00:00:48.090
  • And we are indeed living in this world,
  • 00:00:48.100 --> 00:00:50.180
  • but we're not of this world.
  • 00:00:50.190 --> 00:00:52.070
  • You will be blessed by Jonathan's message,
  • 00:00:52.080 --> 00:00:55.160
  • so I hope you listen carefully and you listen prayerfully.
  • 00:00:55.170 --> 00:00:59.020
  • God bless.
  • 00:00:59.030 --> 00:01:02.130
  • Jonathan Youssef: What must I do to inherit eternal life?
  • 00:01:07.260 --> 00:01:14.270
  • We come to this encounter that Jesus has
  • 00:01:14.280 --> 00:01:18.100
  • with a rich young ruler,
  • 00:01:18.110 --> 00:01:20.160
  • and his question comes as clear as can be,
  • 00:01:20.170 --> 00:01:24.220
  • "What must I do to inherit eternal life?"
  • 00:01:24.230 --> 00:01:31.080
  • What do we think of Jesus, and how can we inherit eternal life?
  • 00:01:31.090 --> 00:01:35.180
  • And it comes from this rich young ruler, but before we get
  • 00:01:35.190 --> 00:01:38.260
  • to him, I want to point out that the ultimate answer comes
  • 00:01:38.270 --> 00:01:43.020
  • in verses 31 to 34.
  • 00:01:43.030 --> 00:01:45.070
  • But I want to start at the end of this section of verses
  • 00:01:45.080 --> 00:01:49.070
  • and then through that lens that we are given, go back and read
  • 00:01:49.080 --> 00:01:54.110
  • our other sections with a different perspective.
  • 00:01:54.120 --> 00:01:59.070
  • And so, here is our lens, if you have your Bible, Luke 18,
  • 00:01:59.080 --> 00:02:03.180
  • starting in verse 31.
  • 00:02:03.190 --> 00:02:06.010
  • "Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, 'We are going up to
  • 00:02:06.020 --> 00:02:11.150
  • Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets
  • 00:02:11.160 --> 00:02:15.210
  • about the Son of Man will be fulfilled.
  • 00:02:15.220 --> 00:02:18.290
  • He will be handed over to the Gentiles.
  • 00:02:19.000 --> 00:02:22.240
  • They will mock him, insult him and spit on him;
  • 00:02:22.250 --> 00:02:26.120
  • flog him and kill him.
  • 00:02:26.130 --> 00:02:28.130
  • On the third day he will rise again.
  • 00:02:28.140 --> 00:02:32.020
  • The disciples did not understand any of this.
  • 00:02:32.030 --> 00:02:35.230
  • Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know
  • 00:02:35.240 --> 00:02:38.250
  • what he was talking about.'"
  • 00:02:38.260 --> 00:02:41.080
  • We need to fully grasp that all that we're
  • 00:02:41.090 --> 00:02:45.200
  • about to look at, all that we discuss as it relates to
  • 00:02:45.210 --> 00:02:50.020
  • the kingdom and eternal life,
  • 00:02:50.030 --> 00:02:53.210
  • all, it's all because of Christ's sacrifice.
  • 00:02:53.220 --> 00:02:59.170
  • Apart from the humiliation of Christ
  • 00:02:59.180 --> 00:03:02.050
  • and the exaltation of Christ, there is no eternal life.
  • 00:03:02.060 --> 00:03:07.070
  • There is no kingdom.
  • 00:03:07.080 --> 00:03:09.120
  • The sin that we carry remains with us.
  • 00:03:09.130 --> 00:03:13.090
  • We have no way of making propitiation.
  • 00:03:13.100 --> 00:03:15.050
  • You and I must understand that this is also not new news.
  • 00:03:15.060 --> 00:03:20.120
  • Jesus says, "Everything that is written by the prophets
  • 00:03:20.130 --> 00:03:24.050
  • about the Son of Man will be fulfilled."
  • 00:03:24.060 --> 00:03:28.040
  • It's not plan B because men couldn't make it.
  • 00:03:28.050 --> 00:03:31.170
  • It has always been the plan from the beginning because man
  • 00:03:31.180 --> 00:03:35.110
  • was never going to make it on his own.
  • 00:03:35.120 --> 00:03:38.250
  • This concept has been prophesied and looked forward to.
  • 00:03:38.260 --> 00:03:44.090
  • It's how the saints of the Old Testament
  • 00:03:44.100 --> 00:03:46.180
  • were saved, looking forward to that day of the Son of Man
  • 00:03:46.190 --> 00:03:50.220
  • who would finally make a way fully to God.
  • 00:03:50.230 --> 00:03:54.150
  • It's how we, today, look back on what was once hidden,
  • 00:03:54.160 --> 00:03:58.050
  • but is now fully revealed.
  • 00:03:58.060 --> 00:04:00.280
  • It's Christ's sacrifice. It's Christ's sacrifice.
  • 00:04:00.290 --> 00:04:05.070
  • It's Christ's sacrifice.
  • 00:04:05.080 --> 00:04:07.090
  • Do not forget that. Do not forget that.
  • 00:04:07.100 --> 00:04:12.050
  • Now, we turn to our earlier verses.
  • 00:04:12.060 --> 00:04:15.190
  • Before we get to the rich ruler though, I want to look at these
  • 00:04:15.200 --> 00:04:20.030
  • three verses about Jesus and the babies
  • 00:04:20.040 --> 00:04:24.170
  • because I believe all of these accounts hold together
  • 00:04:24.180 --> 00:04:28.250
  • and all of these things hold together
  • 00:04:28.260 --> 00:04:30.230
  • in the chapter that Luke has put together.
  • 00:04:30.240 --> 00:04:33.220
  • He's done this intentionally and so, we read in verse 15.
  • 00:04:33.230 --> 00:04:37.160
  • "People were also bringing babies to Jesus
  • 00:04:38.180 --> 00:04:42.230
  • to have him touch them.
  • 00:04:42.240 --> 00:04:45.070
  • When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them.
  • 00:04:45.080 --> 00:04:47.270
  • But Jesus called the children to him and said,
  • 00:04:47.280 --> 00:04:50.250
  • 'Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them,
  • 00:04:50.260 --> 00:04:54.210
  • for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
  • 00:04:54.220 --> 00:04:58.220
  • I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive
  • 00:04:58.230 --> 00:05:01.140
  • the kingdom of God
  • 00:05:01.150 --> 00:05:02.240
  • like a little child will never enter it.'"
  • 00:05:02.250 --> 00:05:06.230
  • And so, our second point, or now that we have this lens
  • 00:05:06.240 --> 00:05:10.270
  • of the sacrifice of Christ, we can say,
  • 00:05:10.280 --> 00:05:14.220
  • we receive the kingdom freely.
  • 00:05:14.230 --> 00:05:19.050
  • We receive the kingdom freely.
  • 00:05:19.060 --> 00:05:22.150
  • And here in this passage, the children have nothing
  • 00:05:22.160 --> 00:05:26.060
  • to contribute and the disciples are shooing them away,
  • 00:05:26.070 --> 00:05:30.280
  • shooing them away.
  • 00:05:30.290 --> 00:05:33.130
  • They think this is a waste of Jesus's time
  • 00:05:33.140 --> 00:05:36.110
  • because they have nothing to contribute.
  • 00:05:36.120 --> 00:05:38.200
  • So, Jesus says, "On the contrary,
  • 00:05:38.210 --> 00:05:40.210
  • let them come to me.
  • 00:05:40.220 --> 00:05:43.120
  • The kingdom belongs to such as these children."
  • 00:05:43.130 --> 00:05:51.150
  • Now, does this mean that only babies will inherit the kingdom?
  • 00:05:51.160 --> 00:05:55.130
  • What is it about babies that makes them worthy of imitation?
  • 00:05:55.140 --> 00:06:00.270
  • Well, he goes on to say, "Anyone who will not receive
  • 00:06:00.280 --> 00:06:04.170
  • the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."
  • 00:06:04.180 --> 00:06:08.220
  • We receive the kingdom freely.
  • 00:06:08.230 --> 00:06:12.210
  • We cannot buy the kingdom, as we're about to see.
  • 00:06:12.220 --> 00:06:15.230
  • We cannot earn the kingdom, as our pharisee believed.
  • 00:06:15.240 --> 00:06:18.290
  • We cannot steal the kingdom.
  • 00:06:19.000 --> 00:06:20.260
  • We cannot deserve the kingdom. We receive it freely.
  • 00:06:20.270 --> 00:06:26.020
  • It's a picture of how we are to receive the kingdom in humility
  • 00:06:26.030 --> 00:06:31.110
  • because we cannot do it ourselves.
  • 00:06:31.120 --> 00:06:34.270
  • We cannot do it ourselves. Instead, it is made available.
  • 00:06:34.280 --> 00:06:39.130
  • Remember our first point, it is made available
  • 00:06:39.140 --> 00:06:42.150
  • through that sacrifice of Christ.
  • 00:06:42.160 --> 00:06:47.110
  • We are constantly, since the beginning, trying to get back
  • 00:06:47.120 --> 00:06:51.050
  • into the Garden of Eden by our works
  • 00:06:51.060 --> 00:06:54.080
  • and that's not how it will happen.
  • 00:06:54.090 --> 00:06:57.070
  • The kingdom is received freely because of
  • 00:06:57.080 --> 00:07:01.150
  • the sacrifice of Christ.
  • 00:07:01.160 --> 00:07:05.220
  • Then we turn to our main story taking place
  • 00:07:05.230 --> 00:07:07.280
  • with the rich ruler.
  • 00:07:07.290 --> 00:07:11.080
  • What does the rich ruler ask after hearing about how he must
  • 00:07:11.090 --> 00:07:15.190
  • become like a child to come into the kingdom?
  • 00:07:15.200 --> 00:07:19.250
  • He asked, "What must I do to inherit eternal life?
  • 00:07:20.070 --> 00:07:25.090
  • What must I do to inherit eternal life?"
  • 00:07:25.100 --> 00:07:28.040
  • As we said, he's already off on a bad premise
  • 00:07:28.050 --> 00:07:30.180
  • that he must do something.
  • 00:07:30.190 --> 00:07:33.110
  • He hasn't understood the first lesson that
  • 00:07:33.120 --> 00:07:35.290
  • the kingdom is received freely.
  • 00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:39.100
  • Notice how he starts his conversation with Jesus
  • 00:07:39.110 --> 00:07:42.280
  • by addressing him as good.
  • 00:07:44.090 --> 00:07:46.130
  • He calls him "good teacher," and Jesus addresses him
  • 00:07:46.140 --> 00:07:49.080
  • calling him good.
  • 00:07:49.090 --> 00:07:50.250
  • "Why do you call me good?
  • 00:07:50.260 --> 00:07:53.040
  • No one is good except for God."
  • 00:07:53.050 --> 00:07:55.190
  • What is Jesus doing here?
  • 00:07:55.200 --> 00:07:58.140
  • Why does he even draw this up?
  • 00:07:58.150 --> 00:08:00.160
  • In Jewish tradition, the term "good" was used
  • 00:08:00.170 --> 00:08:03.170
  • and reserved only for God.
  • 00:08:03.180 --> 00:08:06.140
  • You did not call people good.
  • 00:08:06.150 --> 00:08:09.290
  • So, does this man recognize that Jesus is worthy of being
  • 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:13.150
  • called good because he is God incarnate?
  • 00:08:13.160 --> 00:08:17.240
  • I think what Jesus is doing here is questioning
  • 00:08:17.250 --> 00:08:20.240
  • the rich ruler's standard of goodness.
  • 00:08:20.250 --> 00:08:26.060
  • How good does he think he himself is?
  • 00:08:26.070 --> 00:08:30.050
  • And we get the response to that in the next question.
  • 00:08:30.060 --> 00:08:33.030
  • And Jesus presents him with some of the commandments,
  • 00:08:33.040 --> 00:08:37.180
  • and the rich ruler response, "All of these I have kept
  • 00:08:37.190 --> 00:08:42.210
  • since I was a boy."
  • 00:08:42.220 --> 00:08:45.030
  • He thinks he himself is good.
  • 00:08:45.040 --> 00:08:50.050
  • Because he has kept all these commandments,
  • 00:08:50.060 --> 00:08:53.130
  • his goodness is what will save him.
  • 00:08:53.140 --> 00:08:55.180
  • Even in his original question,
  • 00:08:55.190 --> 00:08:57.270
  • "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
  • 00:08:57.280 --> 00:09:01.000
  • Not, "What must I believe?"
  • 00:09:01.010 --> 00:09:02.150
  • Or, "What must I know? What must I do?"
  • 00:09:02.160 --> 00:09:07.000
  • Receive the kingdom freely.
  • 00:09:07.010 --> 00:09:10.060
  • What about how I relate to God?
  • 00:09:10.070 --> 00:09:12.210
  • And he should have been thinking about this.
  • 00:09:12.220 --> 00:09:14.280
  • What about honoring God?
  • 00:09:14.290 --> 00:09:16.250
  • And in verse 22, Jesus hits him with how to honor God.
  • 00:09:16.260 --> 00:09:22.280
  • "Sell everything you have, and give it to the poor."
  • 00:09:22.290 --> 00:09:28.270
  • And that was very hard for this ruler
  • 00:09:28.280 --> 00:09:31.190
  • because he was very wealthy.
  • 00:09:31.200 --> 00:09:34.280
  • So, Jesus reveals this man's lack of worship of God by going
  • 00:09:34.290 --> 00:09:41.130
  • to the area in his life where he refuses to follow God,
  • 00:09:41.140 --> 00:09:47.290
  • which is our next point.
  • 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:50.260
  • Receive the kingdom freely.
  • 00:09:50.270 --> 00:09:52.210
  • Expect it will cost you, in some sense, everything.
  • 00:09:52.220 --> 00:09:56.250
  • But this man, this is the one key area that reveals his heart
  • 00:09:56.260 --> 00:10:03.120
  • and the fact that he doesn't actually live for God.
  • 00:10:03.130 --> 00:10:07.210
  • And so, there are two things that are happening in our story
  • 00:10:07.220 --> 00:10:13.020
  • with the rich ruler.
  • 00:10:13.030 --> 00:10:14.260
  • First, we see that the ruler is not as good as he thinks he is.
  • 00:10:14.270 --> 00:10:18.140
  • He cannot earn eternal life.
  • 00:10:18.150 --> 00:10:21.200
  • He cannot earn his way into the kingdom.
  • 00:10:21.210 --> 00:10:24.200
  • He needs to learn the lesson of the children.
  • 00:10:24.210 --> 00:10:27.090
  • This man has resources, he has status, he has perceived
  • 00:10:27.100 --> 00:10:31.250
  • obedience, and the children have none of those things.
  • 00:10:31.260 --> 00:10:36.060
  • He needs to receive the kingdom freely.
  • 00:10:36.070 --> 00:10:40.070
  • His love of money is only a symptom of his lack of goodness.
  • 00:10:40.080 --> 00:10:45.260
  • And second, he needs to see that the inheritance of eternal life
  • 00:10:45.270 --> 00:10:51.070
  • will cost him, in some sense, everything.
  • 00:10:51.080 --> 00:10:54.210
  • Christianity is not turning your life to Christ
  • 00:10:54.220 --> 00:10:59.040
  • and then everything becomes easy.
  • 00:10:59.050 --> 00:11:03.200
  • Christianity is dying to self every day.
  • 00:11:03.210 --> 00:11:08.240
  • Chapter 17, Jesus tells his disciples about the day
  • 00:11:08.250 --> 00:11:12.010
  • the Son of Man, when he returns, "Whoever tries to keep his life
  • 00:11:12.020 --> 00:11:17.060
  • will lose it and whoever loses his life will preserve it."
  • 00:11:17.070 --> 00:11:21.080
  • And you may be asking, what does my burden is easy and my yoke
  • 00:11:21.090 --> 00:11:28.140
  • is light from Matthew 11?
  • 00:11:28.150 --> 00:11:30.150
  • How do I interpret that? What does that mean?
  • 00:11:30.160 --> 00:11:33.040
  • In that section, he is talking about the fact that you
  • 00:11:33.050 --> 00:11:37.060
  • don't have to earn it.
  • 00:11:37.070 --> 00:11:40.020
  • You don't have the burden of accomplishing salvation.
  • 00:11:40.030 --> 00:11:43.050
  • You don't have the burden of ushering in the kingdom.
  • 00:11:43.060 --> 00:11:46.230
  • That has been done.
  • 00:11:46.240 --> 00:11:49.060
  • You get to rest in the knowledge that that work is completed,
  • 00:11:49.070 --> 00:11:54.190
  • it is finished.
  • 00:11:54.200 --> 00:11:57.010
  • It's the lesson of the babies.
  • 00:11:57.020 --> 00:11:59.180
  • But now, there is the, "Do I believe that" moment.
  • 00:11:59.190 --> 00:12:06.220
  • If what I just said before is true, that it has been done,
  • 00:12:06.230 --> 00:12:14.000
  • remember verses 31 to 34, if we look through the lens of
  • 00:12:14.010 --> 00:12:18.030
  • Christ's sacrifice, then we need to understand there will be
  • 00:12:18.040 --> 00:12:24.170
  • a cost to follow that.
  • 00:12:24.180 --> 00:12:28.090
  • There will be a cost to it not being up to us.
  • 00:12:28.100 --> 00:12:35.010
  • We therefore, submit to the one who has met the requirement
  • 00:12:35.020 --> 00:12:39.110
  • for gaining eternal life and daily we forfeit the things that
  • 00:12:39.120 --> 00:12:45.220
  • keep us from submitting to him.
  • 00:12:45.230 --> 00:12:49.080
  • And the rich young ruler can't do that.
  • 00:12:49.090 --> 00:12:53.110
  • His money has become a stumbling block to him.
  • 00:12:53.120 --> 00:13:00.120
  • He refuses to let go of it. He loves it too much.
  • 00:13:00.130 --> 00:13:07.290
  • It stands between him and the inheritance of eternal life
  • 00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:12.210
  • that he clearly desires.
  • 00:13:12.220 --> 00:13:15.170
  • The issue is not about the amount or even the money itself.
  • 00:13:15.180 --> 00:13:21.190
  • The issue is with the heart.
  • 00:13:21.200 --> 00:13:24.250
  • Just because something is undeserved does not mean
  • 00:13:24.260 --> 00:13:30.220
  • that it is unconditional.
  • 00:13:30.230 --> 00:13:33.290
  • Receiving the kingdom is free, but it demands that we give up
  • 00:13:34.000 --> 00:13:40.270
  • control of our life, which makes sense because the kingdom of God
  • 00:13:40.280 --> 00:13:45.280
  • is where God is reigning as king.
  • 00:13:45.290 --> 00:13:48.250
  • If you want to be in a place where God reigns supreme,
  • 00:13:48.260 --> 00:13:52.020
  • then you will have to be willing to give up that authority
  • 00:13:52.030 --> 00:13:56.040
  • and that control that you want in your life.
  • 00:13:56.050 --> 00:13:59.110
  • And so, it begs the question, what is it that you
  • 00:13:59.120 --> 00:14:04.020
  • are unwilling to give up for the kingdom?
  • 00:14:04.030 --> 00:14:07.120
  • What is it that you are unwilling to give up for God?
  • 00:14:07.130 --> 00:14:11.100
  • Is it money? Is it identity?
  • 00:14:11.110 --> 00:14:13.120
  • Is it relationships?
  • 00:14:13.130 --> 00:14:15.190
  • You know where, in your life, you are unwilling to give up
  • 00:14:15.200 --> 00:14:23.090
  • things for God, you and probably only you know this.
  • 00:14:23.100 --> 00:14:29.210
  • Jesus tells this man it is his money that he is unwilling
  • 00:14:29.220 --> 00:14:34.250
  • to give up, and the men became very sad and he walked away
  • 00:14:34.260 --> 00:14:41.260
  • from Jesus very sad.
  • 00:14:41.270 --> 00:14:45.210
  • Jesus goes on to say how hard it is for the rich
  • 00:14:45.220 --> 00:14:48.180
  • to enter the kingdom of God.
  • 00:14:48.190 --> 00:14:50.140
  • "Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye
  • 00:14:50.150 --> 00:14:53.100
  • of a needle than for a rich man to enter
  • 00:14:53.110 --> 00:14:55.280
  • into the kingdom of God."
  • 00:14:55.290 --> 00:14:57.270
  • Well, we know that there are rich people in heaven.
  • 00:14:57.280 --> 00:15:00.020
  • Abraham had vast amounts of wealth.
  • 00:15:00.030 --> 00:15:01.270
  • David obviously was wealthy.
  • 00:15:01.280 --> 00:15:03.170
  • And so, if this is not saying simply that wealthy people
  • 00:15:03.180 --> 00:15:09.000
  • cannot enter into the kingdom of God, then what is it saying?
  • 00:15:09.010 --> 00:15:13.030
  • What it is saying is that wealthy people find it difficult
  • 00:15:13.040 --> 00:15:16.060
  • letting go of money, just like anyone who has been blessed
  • 00:15:16.070 --> 00:15:21.190
  • with some material thing, or a gift, or something,
  • 00:15:21.200 --> 00:15:24.240
  • they have a hard time letting go of that thing.
  • 00:15:24.250 --> 00:15:27.070
  • It's become their identity.
  • 00:15:27.080 --> 00:15:28.170
  • It's become their security, but the kingdom cannot be bought
  • 00:15:28.180 --> 00:15:32.230
  • and it cannot be earned.
  • 00:15:32.240 --> 00:15:34.170
  • In fact, it is impossible for man to receive the kingdom
  • 00:15:34.180 --> 00:15:38.090
  • or gain entry into the kingdom himself, wealthy or not.
  • 00:15:38.100 --> 00:15:43.290
  • And so, that's why the question comes,
  • 00:15:44.000 --> 00:15:47.040
  • "Well then, who then can be saved?"
  • 00:15:47.050 --> 00:15:49.220
  • And Jesus replies, "What is impossible with man
  • 00:15:49.230 --> 00:15:54.060
  • is possible with God."
  • 00:15:54.070 --> 00:15:56.210
  • God can work in us to change us.
  • 00:15:56.220 --> 00:16:02.230
  • He has to be at work in us, changing our hearts to bring us
  • 00:16:02.240 --> 00:16:08.100
  • to accept that we do not earn anything or deserve anything,
  • 00:16:08.110 --> 00:16:14.280
  • and changing our hearts to let us let go of anything
  • 00:16:14.290 --> 00:16:18.130
  • that we hold on to above him.
  • 00:16:18.140 --> 00:16:23.120
  • Will we be humble enough to say, "I don't bring anything to
  • 00:16:23.130 --> 00:16:26.240
  • the table, I cannot bring anything to the table"?
  • 00:16:26.250 --> 00:16:30.010
  • And I think most of us have come to that point at some place
  • 00:16:30.020 --> 00:16:33.290
  • in our lives.
  • 00:16:34.000 --> 00:16:35.290
  • But then to also know that in receiving the kingdom freely,
  • 00:16:36.000 --> 00:16:39.170
  • you can expect that it will cost you everything.
  • 00:16:39.180 --> 00:16:44.050
  • It completely reorientates your life.
  • 00:16:44.060 --> 00:16:48.190
  • We need to keep this same attitude never to start thinking
  • 00:16:48.200 --> 00:16:53.160
  • that I deserve my place in the eternal kingdom, I deserve it.
  • 00:16:53.170 --> 00:17:00.160
  • We should never think that the reorientation of our hearts
  • 00:17:00.170 --> 00:17:05.090
  • happens once and for all.
  • 00:17:05.100 --> 00:17:07.190
  • Our hearts and minds wander and get pulled
  • 00:17:07.200 --> 00:17:09.270
  • in so many different directions.
  • 00:17:09.280 --> 00:17:12.110
  • This is why Paul writes in Romans chapter 12,
  • 00:17:12.120 --> 00:17:14.250
  • "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world,
  • 00:17:14.260 --> 00:17:17.280
  • but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
  • 00:17:17.290 --> 00:17:22.090
  • Renewing, it's ongoing,
  • 00:17:22.100 --> 00:17:24.020
  • it's daily, it's hourly because we still allow
  • 00:17:24.140 --> 00:17:27.150
  • our hearts to become misaligned and make
  • 00:17:27.160 --> 00:17:31.020
  • something else more important than God.
  • 00:17:31.030 --> 00:17:34.240
  • This is why we have to admit that we cannot do it.
  • 00:17:34.250 --> 00:17:39.120
  • We must ask God in our times of trouble, and fear,
  • 00:17:39.130 --> 00:17:43.080
  • and frustration, that he would realign our hearts,
  • 00:17:43.090 --> 00:17:50.040
  • that he would help us admit our dependence on him.
  • 00:17:50.050 --> 00:17:55.220
  • Receive the kingdom freely, expect it could cost you
  • 00:17:57.090 --> 00:18:00.030
  • everything, finally, believe the gain is worth the loss.
  • 00:18:00.040 --> 00:18:05.230
  • And in verse 28, the natural question that comes out,
  • 00:18:05.240 --> 00:18:08.280
  • Peter says, "Well, we've left everything to follow you."
  • 00:18:08.290 --> 00:18:13.190
  • Peter wants to know, "Is my sacrifice worth it?
  • 00:18:13.200 --> 00:18:18.010
  • Do all the things that we gave up to follow you
  • 00:18:19.090 --> 00:18:22.210
  • amount to anything?"
  • 00:18:22.220 --> 00:18:25.100
  • And you may be asking that question this morning too,
  • 00:18:25.110 --> 00:18:28.270
  • "Do all the things that I have given up for God
  • 00:18:28.280 --> 00:18:31.230
  • amount to anything, do my sacrifices count?"
  • 00:18:31.240 --> 00:18:37.210
  • "'I tell you the truth,' Jesus said to them, 'No one who has
  • 00:18:38.080 --> 00:18:43.080
  • left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children
  • 00:18:43.090 --> 00:18:47.090
  • for the sake of the kingdom of God will fail to receive many
  • 00:18:47.100 --> 00:18:51.050
  • times as much in this age, and in the age
  • 00:18:51.060 --> 00:18:54.170
  • to come eternal life.'"
  • 00:18:54.180 --> 00:18:57.030
  • What does that mean?
  • 00:18:57.040 --> 00:18:59.230
  • If I donate my home or my car to a ministry or some cause,
  • 00:18:59.240 --> 00:19:05.150
  • will I receive many cars and many homes?
  • 00:19:05.160 --> 00:19:08.150
  • I don't think that's what Jesus is saying here.
  • 00:19:08.160 --> 00:19:11.290
  • What Jesus is saying is that if you receive the kingdom freely,
  • 00:19:12.000 --> 00:19:18.290
  • giving up to God the things, and the relationships, and the idols
  • 00:19:19.000 --> 00:19:23.040
  • that you hold on dearly to, that those things will be replaced
  • 00:19:23.050 --> 00:19:29.020
  • with better things.
  • 00:19:29.030 --> 00:19:31.160
  • There is no worldly thing if you give it up in exchange
  • 00:19:31.170 --> 00:19:36.170
  • for kingdom things that you will look back on with regret.
  • 00:19:36.180 --> 00:19:41.250
  • But you will be blessed.
  • 00:19:41.260 --> 00:19:45.030
  • Here's the ultimate reality, I think when Jesus says, "Anyone
  • 00:19:45.040 --> 00:19:50.050
  • who gives up these things for the sake of the kingdom
  • 00:19:50.060 --> 00:19:52.100
  • will receive many times as much in this age and in the age
  • 00:19:52.110 --> 00:19:56.020
  • to come eternal life," I think that gift, I think that reward,
  • 00:19:56.030 --> 00:20:02.100
  • I think that thing is Christ himself.
  • 00:20:02.110 --> 00:20:07.010
  • Now, at the outset, that may not sound impressive because I think
  • 00:20:07.020 --> 00:20:11.220
  • our minds have been conditioned to think, "I get what I pay in,
  • 00:20:11.230 --> 00:20:17.050
  • I get back what I pay in.
  • 00:20:17.060 --> 00:20:19.000
  • So, if I am a good and honest Christian, then good things
  • 00:20:19.010 --> 00:20:22.070
  • will come my way.
  • 00:20:22.080 --> 00:20:24.010
  • If I'm bad, and my faith is weak, and I fail as a Christian,
  • 00:20:24.020 --> 00:20:28.280
  • then bad things will come my way and I deserve them."
  • 00:20:28.290 --> 00:20:32.220
  • That is not God's economy.
  • 00:20:32.230 --> 00:20:35.220
  • The rain falls on the righteous and the unrighteous so too
  • 00:20:35.230 --> 00:20:40.260
  • calamity, and disease, and heartache, and disaster falls
  • 00:20:40.270 --> 00:20:44.290
  • on those in Christ and those not in Christ.
  • 00:20:45.000 --> 00:20:49.080
  • The question is where your hope, and your identity, and your
  • 00:20:49.090 --> 00:20:53.000
  • future lie for the Christian who has received the kingdom,
  • 00:20:53.010 --> 00:20:59.160
  • for the Christian who expects that being a follower of Christ
  • 00:20:59.170 --> 00:21:05.030
  • will cost you everything, that Christian can believe and know
  • 00:21:05.040 --> 00:21:10.060
  • that the gain is worth the cost.
  • 00:21:10.070 --> 00:21:14.200
  • I may lose my total net worth.
  • 00:21:14.210 --> 00:21:19.290
  • Does that mean that Christ has abandoned me?
  • 00:21:20.000 --> 00:21:24.250
  • I may lose my health.
  • 00:21:24.260 --> 00:21:28.100
  • Does that mean that Christ has abandoned me?
  • 00:21:28.110 --> 00:21:33.080
  • I may not receive the thing I desire most, a child,
  • 00:21:33.090 --> 00:21:40.170
  • a spouse, does that mean that Christ has abandoned me?
  • 00:21:40.180 --> 00:21:46.280
  • No, no, no, no. You have Christ.
  • 00:21:46.290 --> 00:21:54.020
  • You have Christ who calls you to a new identity in him,
  • 00:21:54.030 --> 00:21:59.230
  • one that is not fickle or false.
  • 00:21:59.240 --> 00:22:02.140
  • You have Christ who provides for you a family, one that is called
  • 00:22:02.150 --> 00:22:06.180
  • to love one another in the way that he loved us, one that
  • 00:22:06.190 --> 00:22:10.220
  • desires truly what is best for you, not what you think
  • 00:22:10.230 --> 00:22:13.160
  • is best for you.
  • 00:22:13.170 --> 00:22:15.120
  • You have Christ who gives you salvation, not one that is that
  • 00:22:15.130 --> 00:22:19.140
  • you have to earn or deserve.
  • 00:22:19.150 --> 00:22:22.090
  • You have Christ who gives you a future, not a temporary
  • 00:22:22.100 --> 00:22:25.110
  • existence, but an eternal one of significance.
  • 00:22:25.120 --> 00:22:30.120
  • And in the age to come eternal life.
  • 00:22:30.130 --> 00:22:33.070
  • In eternal life, you have Christ and that's the answer
  • 00:22:33.080 --> 00:22:37.020
  • to the rich ruler's question about inheriting eternal life.
  • 00:22:37.030 --> 00:22:43.200
  • And all of this is made available to you
  • 00:22:43.210 --> 00:22:50.140
  • because of Christ's sacrifice.
  • 00:22:50.150 --> 00:22:55.040
  • Dr. Youssef: If you heard me long enough, you know that I am
  • 00:23:01.040 --> 00:23:03.120
  • burdened for the next generation.
  • 00:23:03.130 --> 00:23:05.190
  • And I am so grateful to the Lord that God is raising the leaders
  • 00:23:05.200 --> 00:23:10.110
  • of the next generation before our own eyes.
  • 00:23:10.120 --> 00:23:13.110
  • Jonathan Youssef, my youngest son, is called of God
  • 00:23:13.120 --> 00:23:17.070
  • to minister to his generation, that's the next generation.
  • 00:23:17.080 --> 00:23:21.060
  • His podcasts known as "Candid" is gonna bless you.
  • 00:23:21.070 --> 00:23:26.170
  • You need to let any young person in your life know about it.
  • 00:23:26.180 --> 00:23:31.010
  • "Candid," the podcast.
  • 00:23:31.020 --> 00:23:34.000
  • announcer: There's a battle raging as never before
  • 00:23:36.160 --> 00:23:38.290
  • for the hearts and minds of the next generation.
  • 00:23:39.000 --> 00:23:42.000
  • Only 18% of millennials find Christianity relevant
  • 00:23:42.010 --> 00:23:46.150
  • to their lives.
  • 00:23:46.160 --> 00:23:48.080
  • Teens are twice as likely as adults to identify themselves
  • 00:23:48.090 --> 00:23:51.120
  • as atheists.
  • 00:23:51.130 --> 00:23:53.100
  • And half of professing Christian millennials believe
  • 00:23:53.110 --> 00:23:56.020
  • evangelism is wrong.
  • 00:23:56.030 --> 00:23:58.080
  • A vital part of our Vision 2025 initiative is reaching

  • the next generation with biblical truth.

  • Dr. Youssef: This is called a Navigator.
  • 00:24:36.280 --> 00:24:39.010
  • Some of my friends call it pocket missionary.
  • 00:24:39.020 --> 00:24:43.160
  • This has the gospel in it in variety of ways, including
  • 00:24:43.170 --> 00:24:47.250
  • the Bible, the Word of God.
  • 00:24:47.260 --> 00:24:49.250
  • Jonathan: Our Australia team presented this opportunity
  • 00:24:49.260 --> 00:24:52.270
  • for Navigator distribution into the country of Ethiopia.
  • 00:24:52.280 --> 00:24:57.140
  • The pocket missionary Navigator has tremendous potential to go
  • 00:24:57.150 --> 00:25:01.220
  • to places that we can't that so desperately need
  • 00:25:01.230 --> 00:25:04.190
  • to hear the gospel.
  • 00:25:04.200 --> 00:25:08.160
  • Chris Makin: We've actually trained these pastors
  • 00:25:08.170 --> 00:25:11.170
  • and evangelists in how to use the Navigator audio Bibles,
  • 00:25:11.180 --> 00:25:15.080
  • but also we've given them some creative ideas in how
  • 00:25:15.090 --> 00:25:18.030
  • they can use them for their ministry.
  • 00:25:18.040 --> 00:25:23.050
  • They go into small villages and its remote areas to take these
  • 00:25:23.130 --> 00:25:26.220
  • devices out to unreached people groups.
  • 00:25:26.230 --> 00:25:29.100
  • This represents a significant opportunity to have a resource
  • 00:25:29.110 --> 00:25:33.040
  • that is gonna stand the test of time and the conditions
  • 00:25:33.050 --> 00:25:36.190
  • that they find themselves in.
  • 00:25:36.200 --> 00:25:40.070
  • male: Many of them cannot read, cannot write, so with this
  • 00:25:40.080 --> 00:25:44.050
  • tool, they can evangelize and even disciple the members.
  • 00:25:44.060 --> 00:25:49.030
  • So, I would like to get them as many as possible.
  • 00:25:49.040 --> 00:25:53.130
  • male: This is something where they don't have to wait for
  • 00:25:53.140 --> 00:25:56.110
  • a specific time, a specific airing on the radio, but they
  • 00:25:56.120 --> 00:26:00.170
  • can, they can listen to it whenever they want.
  • 00:26:00.180 --> 00:26:03.090
  • They can get their teaching however they want.
  • 00:26:03.100 --> 00:26:05.240
  • Chris: Through the Navigator ministry, they're able to reach
  • 00:26:05.250 --> 00:26:08.070
  • the 25 million people who call northern Ethiopia home.
  • 00:26:08.080 --> 00:26:13.200
  • Jonathan: However we can help them and build them up,
