  • 00:00:39.150 --> 00:00:49.210
  • You can't be an influence while you're being influenced at the
  • 00:00:49.230 --> 00:00:51.270
  • same time. Jesus drank and Jesus ate and Jesus was at parties
  • 00:00:51.290 --> 00:00:55.250
  • and Jesus was yes He was but who were the core voices in His life?
  • 00:00:55.270 --> 00:00:59.210
  • He would be willing to hang out with anyone, go to dinner with
  • 00:00:59.230 --> 00:01:03.050
  • anyone, go to someone's house, yes, yes, yes, yes but He had 12
  • 00:01:03.070 --> 00:01:06.020
  • key friends in His life. His small group you could say.
  • 00:01:06.040 --> 00:01:09.050
  • His community, that you could say. Even from there a greater 70 and
  • 00:01:09.070 --> 00:01:12.240
  • even from there a greater 500.
  • 00:01:12.260 --> 00:01:14.090
  • And even within the 12 disciples did He not have 3 best friends?
  • 00:01:14.110 --> 00:01:16.290
  • Peter, James and John who He really did life with, you seldom see
  • 00:01:17.010 --> 00:01:22.040
  • Jesus doing anything without Peter and James and John around.
  • 00:01:22.060 --> 00:01:26.130
  • And so I think that's the posture, hello, should we just do it like Jesus? Sound like a plan?
  • 00:01:26.150 --> 00:01:30.010
  • Like, let's minister to everyone love everyone, realize that we're
  • 00:01:30.030 --> 00:01:33.290
  • sent out to work and be in this world
  • 00:01:34.010 --> 00:01:35.200
  • and live in community, and seek the peace of the cities that we're living in
  • 00:01:35.220 --> 00:01:40.220
  • and the schools and the parks and the soccer leagues
  • 00:01:40.240 --> 00:01:44.070
  • and your kids gymnastic deal, the whole thing and be around people and be salt and be a light.
  • 00:01:44.090 --> 00:01:49.130
  • Hey thank you so much for tuning in to Fresh Life TV. It is such
  • 00:01:49.150 --> 00:01:53.110
  • privilege to have you with us.
  • 00:01:53.130 --> 00:01:55.150
  • We're in a series of messages called Rumble Strip. You know,
  • 00:01:55.170 --> 00:01:58.120
  • that brr, brr, brr that you feel when your car drifts on the
  • 00:01:58.140 --> 00:02:02.080
  • highway, drifts on the road and all of a sudden, you're
  • 00:02:02.100 --> 00:02:05.020
  • grabbing something on the ground tuning the radio and now
  • 00:02:05.040 --> 00:02:08.030
  • you're hearing a sound, a sound that could save your life.
  • 00:02:08.050 --> 00:02:11.200
  • Keep you from collision, keep you from the ditch. Keep you
  • 00:02:11.220 --> 00:02:14.270
  • from damaging your car by coming into contact with the guardrail.
  • 00:02:14.290 --> 00:02:18.220
  • Similarly, God has put into our heart and through His voice and
  • 00:02:18.240 --> 00:02:22.220
  • through conviction and good friends who speak into our lives.
  • 00:02:22.240 --> 00:02:25.230
  • Those opportunities to course correct, before danger.
  • 00:02:25.250 --> 00:02:30.040
  • If we can lean into this powerful protection, we can be
  • 00:02:30.060 --> 00:02:35.030
  • prevented from disaster.
  • 00:02:35.050 --> 00:02:38.010
  • So this really could be one of the most important series you ever really hear.
  • 00:02:38.030 --> 00:02:42.030
  • If this message blesses you in any way, we would love to hear about it.
  • 00:02:42.050 --> 00:02:45.250

  • Well thank you so much, please enjoy this message from God's word.
  • 00:02:58.210 --> 00:03:02.150
  • Well, we're glad in addition all our locations to have people at
  • 00:03:02.170 --> 00:03:05.140
  • Church online, podcasts. However you're hearing this message,
  • 00:03:05.160 --> 00:03:08.290
  • thanks for being with us. If you have a Bible, turn to Ephesians
  • 00:03:09.010 --> 00:03:12.230
  • Chapter 5. I want to preach a message to you that I'm calling Ten
  • 00:03:12.250 --> 00:03:16.160
  • and Two. Ten and Two.
  • 00:03:16.180 --> 00:03:20.100
  • In life-- which is a highway, we've learned-- you can't drive like a
  • 00:03:20.120 --> 00:03:23.070
  • G, right? We've got to have both hands on the steering wheel. Right? You
  • 00:03:23.090 --> 00:03:27.150
  • got to have hands that-- what is it? Ten and two. I know I know, I
  • 00:03:27.170 --> 00:03:31.210
  • know, I know, they updated it. You're not supposed to do that
  • 00:03:31.230 --> 00:03:33.120
  • anymore, because the airbags will blow your thumbs off. But ten
  • 00:03:33.140 --> 00:03:36.020
  • and two is how I learned it. So ten and two is how I'll preach it. And
  • 00:03:36.040 --> 00:03:38.240
  • nine and three just doesn't sound quite as punchy. It's just not as
  • 00:03:38.260 --> 00:03:42.050
  • zesty. You know what I'm saying? We needed some zest on my
  • 00:03:42.070 --> 00:03:44.130
  • sermon titles. Ephesians 5. What's my title? Ten and Two.
  • 00:03:44.150 --> 00:03:49.050
  • Ephesians, Chapter 5. We've been camped out in these verses.
  • 00:03:49.070 --> 00:03:53.240
  • Have you just been loving yourself some Ephesians? Anybody
  • 00:03:53.260 --> 00:03:56.150
  • else been like, man, my life's been enriched by-- that's the first
  • 00:03:56.170 --> 00:04:00.250
  • three rows. That's usually all I get. It's fine. Ephesians Chapter--
  • 00:04:00.270 --> 00:04:04.230
  • they're loving it in Salt Lake City-- Chapter 5, starting in verse 14.
  • 00:04:04.250 --> 00:04:09.040
  • God's speaking, "Awake you who sleep. Arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light."
  • 00:04:09.060 --> 00:04:20.140
  • I don't know if we could ever read that too many times, really.
  • 00:04:20.160 --> 00:04:23.120
  • Because in every season of the soul it hits us in a different spot.
  • 00:04:23.140 --> 00:04:26.270
  • An area where you've fallen asleep at the wheel, and you're
  • 00:04:26.290 --> 00:04:29.270
  • drifting towards disaster. To hear God say, awake, awake. Where
  • 00:04:29.290 --> 00:04:33.210
  • in your life do you need to hear it?
  • 00:04:33.230 --> 00:04:36.170
  • "Arise from the dead, Christ is going to give you light. See, then,
  • 00:04:36.190 --> 00:04:40.080
  • that you walk circumspectly-- it's careful. Be careful, be careful,
  • 00:04:40.100 --> 00:04:44.010
  • be careful how you live-- not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the
  • 00:04:44.030 --> 00:04:49.150
  • time, because the days are evil Therefore do not be unwise, but
  • 00:04:49.170 --> 00:04:56.040
  • understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with
  • 00:04:56.060 --> 00:04:59.280
  • wine in which is dissipation. But be filled with the Spirit, speaking to
  • 00:05:00.020 --> 00:05:05.110
  • one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and
  • 00:05:05.130 --> 00:05:10.250
  • making melody in your heart to the Lord."
  • 00:05:10.270 --> 00:05:14.140
  • I'm going to really spend some time on that next week. I hope
  • 00:05:14.160 --> 00:05:16.220
  • you'll make plans to be with us. It's going to be a powerful time.
  • 00:05:16.240 --> 00:05:20.000
  • This entire series I've been chomping at the bit to get to the last
  • 00:05:20.020 --> 00:05:23.130
  • message. So you want to be here with us next week as we break
  • 00:05:23.150 --> 00:05:26.220
  • into some of that stuff. "Giving thanks always for all things to God
  • 00:05:26.240 --> 00:05:31.090
  • the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Submitting to one
  • 00:05:31.110 --> 00:05:36.230
  • another in the fear of God."
  • 00:05:36.250 --> 00:05:40.120
  • And, Jesus, we just ask that you would speak something fresh to
  • 00:05:40.140 --> 00:05:42.270
  • us. Something just for right now. Not a word for yesterday. We give
  • 00:05:42.290 --> 00:05:47.080
  • you the luxury of being God. If you want to speak into our
  • 00:05:47.100 --> 00:05:49.100
  • tomorrow, but we really want you to speak into our present. Help
  • 00:05:49.120 --> 00:05:52.090
  • us to see the things we're doing maybe, that we shouldn't be
  • 00:05:52.110 --> 00:05:55.170
  • doing. The things we aren't doing that we should. But at the end of
  • 00:05:55.190 --> 00:05:58.190
  • the day, we just say your will be done.
  • 00:05:58.210 --> 00:06:00.220
  • You know what we need to hear. And we know we need you. And
  • 00:06:00.240 --> 00:06:06.190
  • we pray that as we just quiet our hearts for a moment from the
  • 00:06:06.210 --> 00:06:09.000
  • craziness of life and busyness and plans and things and work that
  • 00:06:09.020 --> 00:06:13.070
  • we would just hear from you. And spend time near to you, and
  • 00:06:13.090 --> 00:06:17.180
  • we'd be changed by it. And we ask that if anyone listening to these
  • 00:06:17.200 --> 00:06:21.000
  • words right now doesn't know you as Savior that you draw them to
  • 00:06:21.020 --> 00:06:24.050
  • yourself with your love, which we know is what leads us to
  • 00:06:24.070 --> 00:06:27.020
  • repentance. We ask and pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
  • 00:06:27.040 --> 00:06:31.200
  • They say that there are critical survival skills that are key to
  • 00:06:31.220 --> 00:06:36.200
  • making it through wilderness experience. And I was surprised to
  • 00:06:36.220 --> 00:06:40.240
  • find, as I googled it and was looking into it, that one of the most
  • 00:06:40.260 --> 00:06:44.160
  • important and most often overlooked survival skills has nothing to
  • 00:06:44.180 --> 00:06:48.070
  • do with the ability to make a fire with a flint. Or to purify water
  • 00:06:48.090 --> 00:06:53.190
  • distilled from your own urine with a plastic bag over a hole you've
  • 00:06:53.210 --> 00:06:57.250
  • dug. Or knowing how to kill and skin and eat a rattlesnake. All the
  • 00:06:57.270 --> 00:07:02.020
  • stuff that we see on Bear Grylls. That's how you survive. That's what you do.
  • 00:07:02.040 --> 00:07:05.160
  • And and, yet, as important as food, water, and shelter is, that one
  • 00:07:05.180 --> 00:07:11.090
  • of the most important-- one of the most commonly overlooked
  • 00:07:11.110 --> 00:07:14.250
  • mistakes that people make when setting off to go into the
  • 00:07:14.270 --> 00:07:18.150
  • wilderness where they feel confident and competent because of
  • 00:07:18.170 --> 00:07:21.070
  • their abilities to do some of those and other things that we haven't
  • 00:07:21.090 --> 00:07:24.210
  • gotten into. Reading the stars, et cetera, et cetera. Knowing which
  • 00:07:24.230 --> 00:07:28.060
  • berries are the good berries and which berries are the stoned
  • 00:07:28.080 --> 00:07:30.160
  • berries and dead berries. You've got to figure that stuff out-- But
  • 00:07:30.180 --> 00:07:34.050
  • one of the most important things is, in fact, telling three people
  • 00:07:34.070 --> 00:07:38.000
  • where you're going and when you expect to be back. That's James Franco, right?
  • 00:07:38.020 --> 00:07:43.170
  • Telling-- too soon-- Telling 3 people where you're going-- here's
  • 00:07:43.190 --> 00:07:50.130
  • where I'm going to be. And here's when I plan to come back. Here's
  • 00:07:50.150 --> 00:07:53.290
  • my question. When you end up in your life in a dangerous place or,
  • 00:07:54.010 --> 00:08:00.090
  • spiritually speaking, you've dropped off the radar. You're in a spot
  • 00:08:00.110 --> 00:08:03.030
  • that's important where you need rescue, does anybody know to
  • 00:08:03.050 --> 00:08:07.090
  • come looking for you? Who in your life is postured to rush to you to
  • 00:08:07.110 --> 00:08:12.120
  • know? Who is positioned in your life to come looking for you and to
  • 00:08:12.140 --> 00:08:16.020
  • send in the helicopters? That's the question.
  • 00:08:16.040 --> 00:08:19.210
  • We're in a series of messages called Rumble Strip. We're using
  • 00:08:19.230 --> 00:08:23.030
  • these little bumps or these slits, these dips, that are built into the
  • 00:08:23.050 --> 00:08:27.020
  • road, carved into the road, placed on the road for our protection.
  • 00:08:27.040 --> 00:08:31.160
  • We're using them as an analogy to talk about what's the equivalent
  • 00:08:31.180 --> 00:08:35.100
  • in our lives. And we're doing so from this text that tells us wake up,
  • 00:08:35.120 --> 00:08:38.220
  • wake up you who sleep. Because that's what those bumps are
  • 00:08:38.240 --> 00:08:41.110
  • there to do. They're audible and tactile things. They're to tell us
  • 00:08:41.130 --> 00:08:45.030
  • you're moving in the wrong direction. We're asking the question,
  • 00:08:45.050 --> 00:08:49.280
  • what in our lives tells us when we're drifting towards danger? How
  • 00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:55.060
  • do we not make foolish decisions?
  • 00:08:55.080 --> 00:08:58.180
  • Of course, nobody argues with these things being on the highway.
  • 00:08:58.200 --> 00:09:01.150
  • Maybe a cyclist. That's not a great feeling, actually. In a car it's like
  • 00:09:01.170 --> 00:09:07.070
  • a massage. On a road bike with skinny tires, it will knock your
  • 00:09:07.090 --> 00:09:11.200
  • fillings out of your teeth. But they put gaps in them for the bikes to
  • 00:09:11.220 --> 00:09:15.090
  • get through. I've also heard that one community that is really not
  • 00:09:15.110 --> 00:09:18.050
  • into rumble strips is the Amish community on the Eastern
  • 00:09:18.070 --> 00:09:20.260
  • Seaboard, because of the horse and buggies. And they just don't
  • 00:09:20.280 --> 00:09:23.090
  • do well with the wooden wheels, I guess. I wouldn't know.
  • 00:09:23.110 --> 00:09:26.140
  • But here's what I know. I know most of us go, yeah, rumble strips
  • 00:09:26.160 --> 00:09:30.060
  • are important. That's a good thing. Agreed? Why? Because rumble
  • 00:09:30.080 --> 00:09:34.040
  • strips save lives. Rumble strips save lives. They only cost $5.000
  • 00:09:34.060 --> 00:09:39.050
  • per mile to install. Which when you consider the cost-- the
  • 00:09:39.070 --> 00:09:43.180
  • staggering cost of putting roads in and the upkeep of roads,
  • 00:09:43.200 --> 00:09:46.220
  • repaving roads-- it's a pretty small amount of money. $5.000 per
  • 00:09:46.240 --> 00:09:50.090
  • 1 mile of rumble strips. And yet the Department of Transportation
  • 00:09:50.110 --> 00:09:54.020
  • estimates that on any stretch of road where they've been installed,
  • 00:09:54.040 --> 00:09:57.050
  • the fatalities on that road dropped by as much as 51%.
  • 00:09:57.070 --> 00:10:00.210
  • A good use of the taxpayer dollars, government. Rumble strip. Go
  • 00:10:02.000 --> 00:10:05.220
  • ahead, feel free. Put those in any time you see fit. Of course, every
  • 00:10:05.240 --> 00:10:10.140
  • one of us goes, yes, please put those in. Because we know. We've
  • 00:10:10.160 --> 00:10:12.270
  • all have been touched by fatalities on roads in this country. Which
  • 00:10:12.290 --> 00:10:17.040
  • happens way too much. How much? Well, 37.000 lives per year.
  • 00:10:17.060 --> 00:10:22.260
  • And that number has steadily the last few years been going up,
  • 00:10:22.280 --> 00:10:26.010
  • actually. 37.000 plus lives per year lost on roads and highways
  • 00:10:26.030 --> 00:10:33.010
  • in the United States of America.
  • 00:10:33.030 --> 00:10:34.260
  • The three biggest factors being drunk driving, not wearing seat belts,
  • 00:10:34.280 --> 00:10:38.290
  • and speeding. Which is really a terrible thing, because all 3 of
  • 00:10:39.010 --> 00:10:43.070
  • those are preventable. None of those things have to happen. That's
  • 00:10:43.090 --> 00:10:46.220
  • not animals jumping. The three biggest factors in the loss of lives
  • 00:10:46.240 --> 00:10:50.190
  • on the roads in our day. Drunk driving, not wearing seat belts, and
  • 00:10:50.210 --> 00:10:54.100
  • speeding. Hey, listen to me. We can do better. Come on, let's be
  • 00:10:54.120 --> 00:10:57.000
  • better drivers now. None of those things need to creep into our
  • 00:10:57.020 --> 00:11:00.080
  • lives. We can all make good decisions. Amen? Amen.
  • 00:11:00.100 --> 00:11:04.130
  • So rumble strips save lives. But highways and roads aren't the only
  • 00:11:04.150 --> 00:11:10.130
  • places where they need to be installed. We need them in our lives if
  • 00:11:10.150 --> 00:11:14.140
  • we are to redeem the time knowing that the days are evil. If we are
  • 00:11:14.160 --> 00:11:18.160
  • to-- as one translation puts it- make the most out of time. Because
  • 00:11:18.180 --> 00:11:22.160
  • the days are really evil. Now, when we think about evil days, we
  • 00:11:22.180 --> 00:11:26.190
  • think about a wicked day. And us being tainted or influenced by a
  • 00:11:26.210 --> 00:11:29.270
  • dark day that we live in. And, certainly, that is true in a sense. But I
  • 00:11:29.290 --> 00:11:33.100
  • think there's also a play on words going on. Why? Because
  • 00:11:33.120 --> 00:11:36.020
  • wickedness and speed are connected.
  • 00:11:36.040 --> 00:11:38.120
  • If we speak of that car, how fast is that car? Come on, guys, you
  • 00:11:38.140 --> 00:11:41.150
  • know that car's wicked fast. That motorcycle's wicked quick. You
  • 00:11:41.170 --> 00:11:46.160
  • think about that speed. I think that is partially what Paul's using as
  • 00:11:46.180 --> 00:11:50.120
  • his analogy. Make the most out of time. Make sure you don't let
  • 00:11:50.140 --> 00:11:53.120
  • your life be wasted. Don't waste your life, because your life is
  • 00:11:53.140 --> 00:11:56.240
  • wicked fast. It's evil how quickly your life will be over. Jennie and I
  • 00:11:56.260 --> 00:12:03.160
  • were on our date night this week. We take a weekly date night. And
  • 00:12:03.180 --> 00:12:07.000
  • it's just been our habit in our marriage. Partially, because we just
  • 00:12:07.020 --> 00:12:10.180
  • really love being together, and partially because of preventative maintenance.
  • 00:12:10.200 --> 00:12:13.040
  • We're not waiting until oh, man, were on the rocks. We really need
  • 00:12:13.060 --> 00:12:15.250
  • some time together. No, we're spending that infusion constantly.
  • 00:12:15.270 --> 00:12:19.060
  • That drip, drip, drip, drip of time together. And sometimes it's
  • 00:12:19.080 --> 00:12:22.080
  • elaborate and fancy. We just celebrated a big anniversary. And so
  • 00:12:22.100 --> 00:12:26.210
  • we had a more special date night. We went and saw a show on
  • 00:12:26.230 --> 00:12:30.020
  • Broadway, and that was awesome. And yet, the normal is just-- it
  • 00:12:30.040 --> 00:12:33.190
  • might just be a movie and the healthy dinner of popcorn and Milk
  • 00:12:33.210 --> 00:12:36.100
  • Duds. Combined, of course. I'm not a pagan. Ever shake those in
  • 00:12:36.120 --> 00:12:41.040
  • there? Really softens them up. Makes it better on the teeth. My
  • 00:12:41.060 --> 00:12:43.090
  • dentist is not in this worship experience, so I can say that.
  • 00:12:43.110 --> 00:12:46.100
  • So here's the-- the beauty is that we just get that time together. This
  • 00:12:46.120 --> 00:12:51.010
  • week we went on a bike ride, because we're stoked that the
  • 00:12:51.030 --> 00:12:53.150
  • weather's been nicer in our part of the country. We've just been
  • 00:12:53.170 --> 00:12:55.280
  • having great weather in Utah and Wyoming and Oregon and
  • 00:12:56.000 --> 00:12:59.200
  • Montana. So we're on this bike ride, and spirits are high. And I don't
  • 00:12:59.220 --> 00:13:04.060
  • know how we got on the topic. But we're sitting there eating some
  • 00:13:04.080 --> 00:13:06.250
  • appetizers that we had ordered at a restaurant. And somehow she
  • 00:13:06.270 --> 00:13:10.230
  • asked me how long do you think you'll live. I don't why she asked
  • 00:13:10.250 --> 00:13:14.060
  • me that, or what she was thinking of. A little nervous to make sure
  • 00:13:14.080 --> 00:13:17.150
  • she ate the food before I did after she asked that. But she said that.
  • 00:13:17.170 --> 00:13:22.190
  • What's life expectancy? I'm like I don't know. Let's Google it. So
  • 00:13:22.210 --> 00:13:25.120
  • we get on the phone. Turns out 81 for women, and 76 for men.
  • 00:13:25.140 --> 00:13:30.050
  • So I don't know what you ladies are doing. But maybe all the facial
  • 00:13:30.070 --> 00:13:33.140
  • lotions or something like that. But you get 5 extra years. And so
  • 00:13:33.160 --> 00:13:38.000
  • we were-- then we sat back. And both of us-- we knew we both
  • 00:13:38.020 --> 00:13:40.290
  • were doing the math. She's a little bit older than me. So I had that
  • 00:13:41.010 --> 00:13:44.130
  • working for me. But it's only 6 months. And so I'm like, you're going have 4
  • 00:13:44.150 --> 00:13:48.260
  • and 1/2 years on your hands, honey. What are you going to do with
  • 00:13:48.280 --> 00:13:51.190
  • it? And then we started to do the math on all of our friends. We're
  • 00:13:51.210 --> 00:13:55.220
  • like, dang, they're old. They're 1 foot in the grave, man. They got 11 years left.
  • 00:13:55.240 --> 00:14:01.040
  • And we were just thinking through, what does that feel like to be so
  • 00:14:01.060 --> 00:14:03.190
  • close to the end of your life? But then, of course, we both
  • 00:14:03.210 --> 00:14:06.240
  • acknowledged that that's a great rule of thumb. 81, 76. But the truth
  • 00:14:06.260 --> 00:14:11.190
  • is that none of us are guaranteed anything more than our next breath.
  • 00:14:11.210 --> 00:14:15.220

  • And that brevity of life just set in.
  • 00:15:00.210 --> 00:15:03.290
  • The best case scenario for me, I got 4 decades left on this earth.
  • 00:15:04.010 --> 00:15:07.270
  • What is life? It is wicked fast. And we want to make the most of our
  • 00:15:07.290 --> 00:15:12.250
  • time. We want to redeem our time. None of us want to waste our
  • 00:15:12.270 --> 00:15:15.200
  • lives, which is why we need to lean into the rumble strip.
  • 00:15:15.220 --> 00:15:20.050
  • Last week we talked about the internal-- well, if I can show you on
  • 00:15:20.070 --> 00:15:24.190
  • a highway. Oh, that's convenient The internal rumble strip on the
  • 00:15:24.210 --> 00:15:28.160
  • center line of our conscience. We talked about that gentle nudge
  • 00:15:28.180 --> 00:15:32.260
  • that could save your life. If you missed that message, go back on
  • 00:15:32.280 --> 00:15:35.190
  • the podcast. Learn how to lean into and not fight your conscience.
  • 00:15:35.210 --> 00:15:40.120
  • And this week we're going to talk about the external rumble strip of
  • 00:15:40.140 --> 00:15:44.000
  • the people in our lives. How God wants to use the people in your
  • 00:15:44.020 --> 00:15:50.000
  • life to help you avoid getting to the end of your life and realize you
  • 00:15:50.020 --> 00:15:54.180
  • drifted far from the lane that God intended you to run in. How to
  • 00:15:54.200 --> 00:15:59.140
  • lean into the voice of the people in your lives to tell you when
  • 00:15:59.160 --> 00:16:03.260
  • you're moving in the wrong direction.
  • 00:16:03.280 --> 00:16:07.110
  • My whole sermon in just one sentence is this, when you listen to
  • 00:16:07.130 --> 00:16:11.020
  • the right voices you avoid the wrong places. When you're listening
  • 00:16:11.040 --> 00:16:15.220
  • to the right voices in your life you will avoid the wrong places.
  • 00:16:15.240 --> 00:16:20.220
  • Because those people are God's voice to rumble in your life and
  • 00:16:20.240 --> 00:16:25.130
  • keep you from straying. To keep you from-- listen-- living foolishly.
  • 00:16:25.150 --> 00:16:30.180
  • And the definition of foolish living is to live in the present in a way
  • 00:16:30.200 --> 00:16:35.110
  • that you believe will not impact your future. But the present always impacts the future.
  • 00:16:35.130 --> 00:16:41.200
  • The truth is some of us, we're living in a way that were hurdling
  • 00:16:41.220 --> 00:16:45.210
  • toward a future that we will not like when we get there. But we're
  • 00:16:45.230 --> 00:16:49.230
  • foolishly thinking that we can do whatever we want, and that won't
  • 00:16:49.250 --> 00:16:53.120
  • impact our future, the days that are coming ahead. Let's circle into
  • 00:16:53.140 --> 00:16:59.250
  • the verse that tells us what I'm talking to you about. The voices in
  • 00:16:59.270 --> 00:17:03.070
  • your life, the people in your life that are going to help you to not
  • 00:17:03.090 --> 00:17:05.210
  • waste your life, but to live in a way that circumspect. It's verse 21,
  • 00:17:05.230 --> 00:17:10.100
  • where Paul in the English Standard Version puts it this way,
  • 00:17:10.120 --> 00:17:13.120
  • "Submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ." Submitting
  • 00:17:13.140 --> 00:17:20.010
  • now to one another. This is a mechanism that God's put in place to
  • 00:17:20.030 --> 00:17:24.020
  • keep us from living foolishly. That is to say submitting to each other
  • 00:17:24.040 --> 00:17:28.090
  • out of reverence for Christ. Or as we read in the New King James,
  • 00:17:28.110 --> 00:17:31.140
  • out of our fear of God.
  • 00:17:31.160 --> 00:17:33.210
  • Now, when we talk-- let's define our terms. When we talk about
  • 00:17:33.230 --> 00:17:35.190
  • reverence for Christ or fear of God, what are we talking about?
  • 00:17:35.210 --> 00:17:38.190
  • We're talking about being so in awe of Him, who He is, and what
  • 00:17:38.210 --> 00:17:43.120
  • He's done that you're so overcome, that you're so thunderstruck,
  • 00:17:43.140 --> 00:17:48.070
  • that you're so deeply moved on the inside by what Jesus has done
  • 00:17:48.090 --> 00:17:52.120
  • for you. You're like, well, what has He done? Hello, He gave you
  • 00:17:52.140 --> 00:17:55.010
  • life. Hello, He died on the cross. Hello, rose from the dead, gave
  • 00:17:55.030 --> 00:17:58.130
  • you His Spirit. Gave you a new name. Called you a son. Called you
  • 00:17:58.150 --> 00:18:01.070
  • His daughter. Gave you the fatted calf. Put a robe on your
  • 00:18:01.090 --> 00:18:03.250
  • shoulders, a ring on your finger. Put your name on a table setting in Heaven.
  • 00:18:03.270 --> 00:18:08.010
  • Called you to be a part of the greatest thing going. That is God's
  • 00:18:08.030 --> 00:18:11.010
  • plan to save the world, to touch the lost, to feed the hungry, to
  • 00:18:11.030 --> 00:18:14.190
  • clothe the naked, to put a bed out for the homeless. To put the
  • 00:18:14.210 --> 00:18:17.200
  • Bible into languages it hasn't been translated in yet, so people on
  • 00:18:17.220 --> 00:18:21.010
  • the other side of the world could know His name. He's given you--
  • 00:18:21.030 --> 00:18:24.060
  • that you would be so moved by your reverence for Christ. And if,
  • 00:18:24.080 --> 00:18:29.210
  • by the way, that's like, well, that's pretty good, I need to tell you.
  • 00:18:29.230 --> 00:18:33.180
  • You need to spend little more time in the front half of the book of
  • 00:18:33.200 --> 00:18:35.100
  • Ephesians where God just expands your vistas as far as what
  • 00:18:35.120 --> 00:18:40.270
  • Jesus has done for you. The blessings in Christ. How deep they
  • 00:18:40.290 --> 00:18:44.050
  • are. How wide they are. How big they are. what it truly means to
  • 00:18:44.070 --> 00:18:48.280
  • be a part of Jesus's family.
  • 00:18:49.000 --> 00:18:51.140
  • But Paul, here, tells us if that's true for you, if you really have that
  • 00:18:51.160 --> 00:18:56.080
  • kind of reverence, that kind of awe, that kind of beautiful terror.
  • 00:18:56.100 --> 00:18:59.050
  • That idea of wonderful majesty that you know that when we
  • 00:18:59.070 --> 00:19:02.130
  • appear before God He's going to be clothed in light. And just majestic
  • 00:19:02.150 --> 00:19:06.180
  • in all of His ways. And you know the voice of God splits the cedars
  • 00:19:06.200 --> 00:19:10.170
  • and divides the flames of fire. And causes the deer to give birth.
  • 00:19:10.190 --> 00:19:14.100
  • And caused stars to come shooting out into the Heavens. That you
  • 00:19:14.120 --> 00:19:18.000
  • know who He is. If that's true-- let's look at the verse again-- "Then
  • 00:19:18.020 --> 00:19:21.260
  • we should submit to one another." Your reverence for Christ should
  • 00:19:21.280 --> 00:19:29.090
  • cause you to react to His people in a very specific way of submission.
  • 00:19:29.110 --> 00:19:34.280
  • OK, we defined reverence for Christ. Now let's define submission.
  • 00:19:35.000 --> 00:19:39.000
  • What does it mean? It means to voluntarily-- that's so huge.
  • 00:19:39.020 --> 00:19:42.070
  • Voluntarily-- no one's going to make you. Voluntarily-- no one's
  • 00:19:42.090 --> 00:19:46.000
  • going to force you to live the way God wants you to. Voluntarily put
  • 00:19:46.020 --> 00:19:49.220
  • yourself under the authority of other people within His body. To
  • 00:19:49.240 --> 00:19:54.190
  • voluntarily put yourself in a place of submission to yield to other
  • 00:19:54.210 --> 00:19:59.230
  • people in the body of Christ. If you have a reverence for Christ,
  • 00:19:59.250 --> 00:20:03.260
  • that is what you will do. Why? Because the people in your life
  • 00:20:03.280 --> 00:20:07.100
  • matter more than you know. And that's why we need to circle up to
  • 00:20:07.120 --> 00:20:10.100
  • our first point. Jot it down. The right people. We need right people in our lives.
  • 00:20:10.120 --> 00:20:15.070
  • To a large degree the people in your life are going to determine the
  • 00:20:15.090 --> 00:20:20.140
  • outcome and trajectory of your life. Hear me loud and clear. There
  • 00:20:20.160 --> 00:20:24.250
  • is almost nothing-- your goals, your dreams, your vision, your job,
  • 00:20:24.270 --> 00:20:27.190
  • your hobbies-- almost nothing in your life will determine the
  • 00:20:27.210 --> 00:20:32.070
  • trajectory that your life heads on like the people that you surround
  • 00:20:32.090 --> 00:20:37.060
  • yourself with. Look what Proverbs Chapter 13 says on this subject.
  • 00:20:37.080 --> 00:20:41.280
  • "Become wise by walking with the wise. Hang out with fools and
  • 00:20:42.000 --> 00:20:49.100
  • watch your life fall to pieces."
  • 00:20:49.120 --> 00:20:52.120
  • Doesn't say hang out with a fool becomes a fool. That's inherent.
  • 00:20:52.140 --> 00:20:55.050
  • That's obvious. Hang out with fools and you watch what happens
  • 00:20:55.070 --> 00:20:58.180
  • to your life. It's the same thing that happens to foolish people.
  • 00:20:58.200 --> 00:21:00.270
  • You're going to become like and move towards those you hang out
  • 00:21:00.290 --> 00:21:05.120
  • with. You can't stay wise living life and doing life with foolish
  • 00:21:05.140 --> 00:21:09.080
  • people. Inevitably, it's going to rub off on you. This is even true on
  • 00:21:09.100 --> 00:21:12.150
  • a psychological, neurological level.
  • 00:21:12.170 --> 00:21:15.020
  • I was listening to a talk by Pastor Andy Stanley. And he's a good
  • 00:21:15.040 --> 00:21:18.210
  • friend, and had the chance to preach at his church. And just such
  • 00:21:18.230 --> 00:21:21.050
  • a legend. And he was talking about how studies at Princeton
  • 00:21:21.070 --> 00:21:24.070
  • University-- I had to read someone else talking about them. I'm not
  • 00:21:24.090 --> 00:21:27.010
  • going to be reading studies from Princeton, guys. But he was
  • 00:21:27.030 --> 00:21:29.150
  • talking about there were studies done. And it shows that when you
  • 00:21:29.170 --> 00:21:32.040
  • spend time with people in a concentrated fashion you actually
  • 00:21:32.060 --> 00:21:35.130
  • neurologically fall into the same wavelengths of brain as them.
  • 00:21:35.150 --> 00:21:39.230
  • Meaning they put electrodes on and have people hanging out
  • 00:21:39.250 --> 00:21:42.070
  • together watching a movie or listening to a lecture or just doing
  • 00:21:42.090 --> 00:21:44.240
  • anything, and you actually fall into the same brain pattern. Same
  • 00:21:44.260 --> 00:21:48.210
  • wavelengths. Neurologically, you fall into synchronization with the
  • 00:21:48.230 --> 00:21:52.100
  • people that you're around often.
  • 00:21:52.120 --> 00:21:54.180
  • I was thinking about that as we were worshipping. And I was
  • 00:21:54.200 --> 00:21:57.060
  • thinking about how our last song before the sermon, we always
  • 00:21:57.080 --> 00:22:01.130
  • lock in together every single location. And we have one band all
  • 00:22:01.150 --> 00:22:05.120
  • across the entire Church. 1 click track. And I was just thinking
  • 00:22:05.140 --> 00:22:09.200
  • about people at every one of our 12 different locations. All of us
  • 00:22:09.220 --> 00:22:13.070
  • together clapping-- well, doing our very best to clap to the beat.
  • 00:22:13.090 --> 00:22:16.090
  • Yes, yes, we know you're here. And God loves you too who can't
  • 00:22:16.110 --> 00:22:21.210
  • keep a beat to save your life.
  • 00:22:21.230 --> 00:22:23.070
  • But we're all falling into the same rhythm as we all make much of
  • 00:22:23.090 --> 00:22:27.180
  • Jesus, as we all lift up His name. We're all becoming like each
  • 00:22:27.200 --> 00:22:31.010
  • other, and the pull of the world is diminishing as our eyes are open
  • 00:22:31.030 --> 00:22:35.260
  • once again to the majesty of God. We're becoming like each other,
  • 00:22:35.280 --> 00:22:39.160
  • because we're spending time together. My friend Pastor Craig
  • 00:22:39.180 --> 00:22:43.180
  • Groeschel likes to put it this way-- and I don't think I could put it
  • 00:22:43.200 --> 00:22:45.130
  • better than this-- "Show me your friends and I'll show you your future."
  • 00:22:45.150 --> 00:22:50.160
  • If you show me who you're hanging out with, who you're doing life
  • 00:22:50.180 --> 00:22:53.110
  • with, who are the core relationships in your life, I'll know where
  • 00:22:53.130 --> 00:22:56.150
  • you're heading, because you're going to drift towards those things.
  • 00:22:56.170 --> 00:22:59.070
  • We become like those that we do life with. Why? Because they're
  • 00:22:59.090 --> 00:23:04.190
  • going to be there to rumble certain things and to not rumble certain
  • 00:23:04.210 --> 00:23:07.190
  • things. And if you're hanging out with the wrong people, they're
  • 00:23:07.210 --> 00:23:11.090
  • going to rumble the wrong things.
  • 00:23:11.110 --> 00:23:13.150
  • They'll discourage your desire to serve God. Discourage the
  • 00:23:13.170 --> 00:23:17.200
  • dreams that God's put in your heart. The sacrifice that God's going
  • 00:23:17.220 --> 00:23:20.240
  • to call you to. We're not told too be like this world. We're told to be
  • 00:23:20.260 --> 00:23:25.170
  • not conformed to it. But to be transformed by the renewing of our
  • 00:23:25.190 --> 00:23:29.120
  • mind that's found in this Word. We're told to be a peculiar people.
  • 00:23:29.140 --> 00:23:32.170
  • So if the core voices speaking into your life are not sold out,
  • 00:23:32.190 --> 00:23:37.130
  • passionate, dedicated followers of Jesus, they're not going to
  • 00:23:37.150 --> 00:23:41.220
  • rumble things that would be dangerous and detrimental to you. But
  • 00:23:41.240 --> 00:23:45.220
  • they are going to rumble things that God has told you to do. And
  • 00:23:45.240 --> 00:23:49.240
  • as you laugh with them, as you drink with them, as you party with
  • 00:23:49.260 --> 00:23:53.130
  • them, you're going to think like them. You're going to value like
  • 00:23:53.150 --> 00:23:56.070
  • them. You're going to prioritize like them. You become-- listen to
  • 00:23:56.090 --> 00:23:59.240
  • me-- like those you do life with.
  • 00:23:59.260 --> 00:24:04.230
  • So you need to choose to do life with the right people. Now what's
  • 00:24:04.250 --> 00:24:10.210
  • the inherent tension into such a statement. Well, aren't we
  • 00:24:10.230 --> 00:24:14.080
  • supposed to reach the world? That's not very loving to tell people,
  • 00:24:14.100 --> 00:24:17.140
  • I'm sorry. I can't keep hanging out with you like this. I can't keep
  • 00:24:17.160 --> 00:24:20.230
  • doing this with you like this. Isn't that going to ostracize them?
  • 00:24:20.250 --> 00:24:23.230
  • How am I going to reach a world that I've abandoned? Therein lies
  • 00:24:23.250 --> 00:24:26.230
  • the tension. And the Church tends towards polars. And the Church
  • 00:24:26.250 --> 00:24:31.060
  • tends towards sides of the pendulum and extremes.
  • 00:24:31.080 --> 00:24:35.000
  • Now someone said that the Devil doesn't care which side of the
  • 00:24:35.020 --> 00:24:37.190
  • horse you fall off of, so long as you don't stay in the saddle and
  • 00:24:37.210 --> 00:24:39.290
  • ride. And this is an area where we need to acknowledge the
  • 00:24:40.010 --> 00:24:43.000
  • tension. What's the one side of the tension? Living in a
  • 00:24:43.020 --> 00:24:46.060
  • monastery. I don't want to get any cooties. Everybody, go get your
  • 00:24:46.080 --> 00:24:49.130
  • burlap sack and follow me. We are not for-- that's what the
  • 00:24:49.150 --> 00:24:53.080
  • Pharisees-- you laugh but that's what the Pharisees did. And the
  • 00:24:53.100 --> 00:24:55.250
  • Church loves to do this.
  • 00:24:55.270 --> 00:24:57.130
  • We're forming a church softball league so we don't have to play
  • 00:24:57.150 --> 00:25:00.100
  • softball with the heathens. You know what I'm saying? This is that
  • 00:25:00.120 --> 00:25:03.260
  • tendency towards everything's Christian. I only drink milk from
  • 00:25:03.280 --> 00:25:07.280
  • Christian cows. I only send my kids to Christian schools. I only
  • 00:25:08.000 --> 00:25:11.040
  • listen to music that's Christian music, right? Someone asked C.S. Lewis
  • 00:25:11.060 --> 00:25:16.120
  • one time what it felt like to write Christian books? And he stopped
  • 00:25:16.140 --> 00:25:18.250
  • and said, my books don't have a soul.
  • 00:25:18.270 --> 00:25:20.170
  • Books can't be Christian. Only people can be Christian. I'm a
  • 00:25:20.190 --> 00:25:25.060
  • Christian. I write books. But this mentality of thinking we can make
  • 00:25:25.080 --> 00:25:28.110
  • our Christian little existence, that is completely a train wreck.
  • 00:25:28.130 --> 00:25:32.010
  • Why? Because sin comes in, even into the monastery. Why? We
  • 00:25:32.030 --> 00:25:35.210
  • all smuggle it into our heart. And it's this formalism. And it's this
  • 00:25:35.230 --> 00:25:39.040
  • legalism. And it's this religiosity which is so icky and so gross and
  • 00:25:39.060 --> 00:25:43.110
  • so devastating.
  • 00:25:43.130 --> 00:25:44.270
  • So that's one extreme. What's the other extreme? So much like the
  • 00:25:44.290 --> 00:25:47.070
  • world that we're doing exactly what the world's doing, and now we
  • 00:25:47.090 --> 00:25:49.040
  • have nothing to offer the world anymore. Because you can't be an
  • 00:25:49.060 --> 00:25:52.010
  • influence while you're being influenced at the same time. And the
  • 00:25:52.030 --> 00:25:55.210
  • case for this would be well, Jesus was a friend of sinners. Yes. And
  • 00:25:55.230 --> 00:25:59.200
  • Jesus drank, and Jesus ate and Jesus was at parties, and Jesus
  • 00:25:59.220 --> 00:26:03.070
  • was-- Yes, He was. But who are the core voices in his life?
  • 00:26:03.090 --> 00:26:06.270
  • He would willing to hang out with anyone. Go to dinner with
  • 00:26:06.290 --> 00:26:10.010
  • anyone. Go to someone's house. Yes, yes, yes, but He had 12 key
  • 00:26:10.030 --> 00:26:13.290
  • friends in His life. His small group, you could say. His community
  • 00:26:14.010 --> 00:26:17.030
  • that you could say. And even from there, a greater 70. And even
  • 00:26:17.050 --> 00:26:19.290
  • from there, a greater 500. And then you see key friendships He
  • 00:26:20.010 --> 00:26:22.200
  • identified like Lazarus, and Mary and Martha and others that would
  • 00:26:22.220 --> 00:26:26.100
  • follow and support the ministry. He had His community for sure.
  • 00:26:26.120 --> 00:26:30.010
  • And even within the 12 disciple, did He not have 3 best
  • 00:26:30.030 --> 00:26:32.170
  • friends? Peter, James, and John who He really did life with. You
  • 00:26:32.190 --> 00:26:37.070
  • seldom see Jesus doing anything without Peter and James and John around.
  • 00:26:37.090 --> 00:26:42.050
  • And so I think that's the posture. Hello, should we just do it like
  • 00:26:42.070 --> 00:26:44.270
  • Jesus? That sound like a plan? Let's minister to everyone. Love
  • 00:26:44.290 --> 00:26:48.150
  • everyone. Realize that we're sent out to work, and be in this world,
  • 00:26:48.170 --> 00:26:51.180
  • and live in community. And seek the peace of the cities that we're
  • 00:26:51.200 --> 00:26:56.030
  • living in and the schools and the parks and the soccer leagues and
  • 00:26:56.050 --> 00:27:00.120
  • your kids gymnastic deal. And the whole thing. And be around
  • 00:27:00.140 --> 00:27:03.140
  • people. And be salt and be light and not stay in the salt shaker, but
  • 00:27:03.160 --> 00:27:06.280
  • get out into the world and love people. And realize we're no better
  • 00:27:07.000 --> 00:27:09.060
  • than anybody. We just have been saved by somebody. And His
  • 00:27:09.080 --> 00:27:11.280
  • name is Jesus. And He wants us to be in people's lives.
  • 00:27:12.000 --> 00:27:14.200
  • But also know there's also that pull. And if we're not careful, we'll
  • 00:27:14.220 --> 00:27:18.200
  • let the wrong voices get into the core seats of our soul.
  • 00:27:18.220 --> 00:27:22.090
  • MUSIC
  • 00:27:22.110 --> 00:27:23.110
